Need to put that 1st round draft class into perspective. Is Jackson a bust? Absolutely! Is igbinoghene a bust? Absolutely! But when you look at that draft class and who was available for the positions we drafted...
What if the Dolphins had drafted Issiah Wilson instead of Jackson? Well, Wilson ended up being a bust for the Titans, being a disciplinary problem. The Titans wanted him gone, trading not only Wilson but also a 7th round pick to Miami in exchange for the Dolphins 2021 7th round pick. Wilson was such a bust the Dolphins released him 3 days after the trade!
What if the Dolphins had drafted Jeff Gladney over Noah Igbinoghene? Well sadly we'll never know how Gladney would have panned out as he was killed in a car accident following the 2021 season.
The Dolphins even signed CB Damon Arnette to the practice squad following his release from the Raiders following the 2020 season. Sure, you could blame the Dolphins for another swing and miss by signing Arnette, but even after his 2021 release, event he great Andy Reid took a chance on him and signed him. The Chiefs subsequently released him in January 2022 following an arrest for assault with a deadly weapon and drug charges.
The ONLY lineman who panned out in the draft was Tristian Wirfs who was taken by the Buccaneers but the only way we would have gotten him would have been to pass on Tagovailoa as Wirfs was drafted 13th.
So as much as we have blasted Jackson and Igbinoghene, there really werent much options available to us for those positions during our picks in the draft. I've said so many times before, the draft is a craps shoot....a spin of the roulette wheel. Sometimes you win, but most times you don't.KeyFin likes this. -
There were a lot of duds in the second half of that first round - Grier is not the only GM who whiffed. His millstone is the fact that he whiffed twice. That draft would have been saved with one of the top RBs (Taylor, Dobbins or even Swift) in Iggy’s spot. It was a thin draft for OL, so he took a shot with Jackson, but taking Iggy in round 1 was inexcusable.

Haha!!! Yeah. wasted draft picks is the understatement of the year!
Just Tua over Herbert is enough to deem it a colossal failure. a complete display of ineptitude. The rest was also a joke.
...then there is all of the wasted capitol from the Tunsil trade. How Grier still has a job is beyond me.resnor, dolphin25, The G Man and 1 other person like this. -

I'd still like to know who had more influence on drafting Iggy between Grier and Flores. That really screams a Flores pick, but who knows. IIRC we were actually targeting Aiyuk but San Fran snatched him up.
Jackson has been a massive disappointment, but I wonder what good coaching would have done earlier in his career. Sometimes when a guy gets off on the wrong foot they can't get it going. Still felt like a reach at the time - as much as we needed a LT, he was definitely well below the elite tier guys. Jefferson would have been a great pick in hindsight, or Higgins later on, but outside of them there isn't much.
The running backs get brought up a lot, but Dobbins has been hurt a lot. Taylor would have been a good pick, but he also struggled this year. It's pretty clear we don't value spending premium on them. I'd have rather had Higgins. -

You can lay a whole bunch at Grier's feet, but Iggy should not be one of them.dolphin25 likes this. -
Also, one of the main reasons why Grier and Flores fell out at the end was because Flores wanted more say over personel decisions, which means he was not getting the players he really wanted or else he would not have asked for that.Last edited: Mar 3, 2023 -
One Grier move that is really enraging me as of late is that Chubb deal. I mean, wt-??? I don't think he has ever made it through a full season healthy. The idiot Grier knows they may need that pick if Tua doesn't work out and even if Tua works out, they could really use that pick for an OLineman or something. Man........:gun_bandana:....terrible move.

Let’s see what Fangio can scheme up for him before writing off the trade. Remember, Boyer had X playing 10 yards off his man when that’s not his game. We know Boyer want able to make adjustments, and he was terrible at reworking his schemes for new players. He was still running cover 0 without Jones and with a hobbled X, for crying out loud.dolphin25 likes this.
