There is no question that both Marshall and Dansby are VG players and big upgrades over what we had. The question is they make enough of a difference based on what they cost. Our team went 7-9 without them and 7-9 with them, both years vs a tuff schedule.
Marshall and the O had a better year than 09 by a plus of 22 yards a game, 2 more TD's, and 15 more 20+ yard completions in receiving but, the O scored 5.4 fewer points. We're paying him a ton of money, the 2 second rounders could have been players, and we don't make the two draft day trades we did. He and Henne not getting along last season did not help.
Dansby and the D were also better than 09 by 14 fewer passing yards, and 39 fewer rushing yards (3.6 avg) a game, and the D gave up 3.6 fewer points. I would give Wake and Soliai more credit for that than Dansby. We're paying him a ton of money and, for an ILB who is not going to make a lot of big plays, it's difficult to fit into the team's salary structure. I don't see him having more value than a Wake, Davis, or Solia if he continues his play.
As a fan, it's always great to add VG players but, I'm having some buyer's remorse.

hell yeah

Dansby yes..... Marshall not so much.
-
both yes at this point...addition, addition, addition...and adding new players in coming years, thus more new additions (and addition by subtraction on those shown the door) totally improves the overall speed and skill of this team and what playmakers and number of playmakers we have.
-
Dansby yes, but obviously he didn't cost any draft picks.
Marshall hasn't done enough to warrant two 2nd round picks yet, IMO. -
Dansby without a doubt. His presence lets those other players make the plays they do. Our D is not nearly as impressive without him last year and this alike, I'm sure of that.
Marshall...kind of hard to say. he didnt fit our system at all last year. He wasnt worth it based on last years performance. I'm willing to see what he does this year before saying it was a total loss...but right now I feel like we over payed - buyers remorse indeed. I have a gut feeling hes going to impress this year though. I didnt even feel that way when we signed him. Nothing factual or tangible about it, just a feeling. Could be wrong haha. Regardless, I think it can be easy to overlook the effects marshall did have on O - but our whole system was effed last year, so even that doesnt count for much to me... -
Not sure how signing Dansby is a negative in any way, shape or form. We have remained under the cap so it hasn't put us in salary cap hell. This regime likes to build through the draft and Dansby made a lot of sense given the state of ILB and the need for leadership on D.
As for Marshall, the question is who would we have for the two 2nd rounders traded. No way of knowing for sure who they would have picked and the domino effects of later draft picks as a result of those picks.
So my answer is "yes" and "yes" Marshall and Dansby deals have been worth it.
Our WR corp without Marshall imo would be among the worst in the NFL. With him it puts the Dolphins in at least the top half. Same with the ILB. -
Not a doubt in my mind! Last year we brought in a new scheme on D and Dansby was a big part of that and I thought he delivered, give him and the rest a 2nd year under Nolan and just watch. Marshall should start paying dividends this year, with the ouster of Henning and what appears to be a far more aggressive scheme under Daboll, he should be far more like what we expected. That and he and Henne getting together I think will make all the difference.
-
Plus, two off seasons ago the draft was D side Heavy, and an acquistion of Dansby added to that immediately (along with new D-Co in Nolan).
this off season our draft was O side Heavy, and any grading of the acquistion of Marshall should be properly measured going forward (along with new O-Co in Daboll).
that's the big differences between claiming one has proven and one hasnt to date....TIME!
1,000yds is still 1,000yrds receiving. Adding these new O-side playmakers, including Bush, aides the Marshall acquistion. You make the move when you can, and now having the draft picks balance the O side will get folks to see the value when comparing the D side draft picks and acquistions and Dansby's value.USArmyFinFan likes this. -
i think Marshall was worth it... if it was any other WR on our team with over 1000 yards in 13 games we would be ecstatic... people just had unrealistic expectations based on our offense for Marshall

IMO they were both easily worth it. These weren't one year rentals. These were young players that have already produced and should continue to do so for multiple years.

Dansby hell yes. The difference from fricken Akin Ayodele to one of the top 5 ILBs in the league and a leader. No question.
IMO the offense got worse because our running game went from 4th to crappy. If the Dolphins had the same kind of rush offense in 10 that they had in 09, Marshall probably doesn't get all of the bracket coverage he got last year. I think our stable of 3 (4 if Gates turns up decent) WRs is one of the better ones in the league.
I have no problem with either moves. Brandon Marshall was my birthday present last year. -
{looks over both shoulders for mods} **** yes it was!

I fully expect the O-side to show similar leaps and bounds improvement than the D-side did last year following the prior D-side heavy draft, and D-side trades, and FA signings including new D-Coordinator in Nolan.
The parallels to this most recent O-side heavy draft, these O-side trades and FA signings, including new O-Coordinator in Daboll are striking.
Two Offseasons (two drafts really) done correctly, heavy focus on one side of the ball...and follow it with the other side of the ball. Nice approach when you are getting down the to nitty gritty of playmaker needs! -
I do really like Dansby, and he is a VG fit. I just question spending that much on an ILB, and hope it does not come back to haunt us. We're OK now but, have a number of players/positions very underpaid.
Marshall, not so much. I do not consider him an elite WR, and we are paying elite money. By that I mean more of a game breaker like Fitz, A Johnson, C Johnson, V, Jackson. S Rice, etc. as opposed to someone who will catch 90-100 passes for 10-12 yards a pop. I thought Aquan Boldin was the better value for around $6M a year than Marshall over $9M, and no draft picks. They are similar players. -
Of the other guys you named, Andre Johnson has 9164 yards, 50 TDs and 439 1st downs in 8 years; Calvin Johnson 4191, 33 and 193 in 4; Vincent Jackson 3648, 28, 172 in 6 years; Sidney Rice 2129, 18, 110 in 4 years; Anquan Boldin, 8357, 51 , 406 in 8 years; and Larry Fitzgerald, 8204, 65, 418 in 7 years.
The only one on your list who is appreciably better than Marshall is Fitzgerald, and they may have to create a whole new category for what he is before he's done.
Marshall's figures extrapolate at least comparably to all the guys on that list and they are markedly better than at least 2 of them.

You need impact players. Unfortunately this team has been a bit like a leaky dam. Fix up one area, another one springs a leak.
At this point they're worth it. Time will determine if it'll be worth it in the long run. -
I don't understand the Marshall isn't a #1 talk personally. The guy is a ridiculous talent and can take over games when supplied the ball. And I say this as a person who does not like to call many WRs #1's and as a person who dislikes the WR position.

If we didn't have Brandon Marshall, we'd all be sitting here saying "Man, It'd be nice if we had a guy like Brandon Marshall". So, yes to both.

Both are solid, amazing gets for the Phins. The only reason Marshall is questioned speaks to the ineptness of Henning and our offensive philosophy last year IMO. I mean, who trades the perfect compliment in Ginn for a 5th.
-
In his 2nd and 3rd seasons, with DCs already gameplanning for him, Marshall had 1325 and 1265 yards, respectively. His last season with Denver, amid all the strife and turmoil with that twerp McDaniels, he had 1120 yards and 10 TDs.
It took an entire season of reaching the red zone only to see "wildcat, wildcat, play-action, field goal" for Marshall to be limited to only 3 TDs; but he still had over 1000 yards, even despite that. And he still caught more passes for 1st downs than he did the year before in Denver.
Marshall is almost indomitable. Any team would love to have him. -

I agree. Marshall is an elite reciever. It was only our cap gun offense that kept him from showing it yet again last year.
-
Curtain A: You have 2 proven players who are & will produce for another 2-5 years. Curtain B: You may or may not get players who may or may not make your roster. Call me conservative on this one.

Not question about it...Yes to both.
-
Guys, I am not taking shots at Marshall. He is a #1 WR, and a very good one. I just don't believe him to be elite. FWIW, PFF ranked him at #26, as a receiver only, last year, #17 in 09, and #42 in 08. In looking through the stats, thare are like 10 WRs each of the last 3 years who have had over 1,000 yards with fewer catches, more yards with around the same, and most with half the drops and all with fewer. He is VG but, not as good as you're making him out to be.
