Between reading Mando’s article about how fruitless QB’s taken #1 have been towards winning a Super Bowl and seeing CBS’s mock draft which shows us taken 2 DE/OLB’s and an OT, it got me thinking.
I know there’s a lot of discussion around which QB is worth the pick, if we even go that direction. Assuming we get #1, 10 and 20, what would you do?
I don’t think any QB is going to be successful with this years or next years roster so here’s mine:
1a) Trade back if anyone falls in love with Tua or Herbert
1b) Draft Chase Young
10) Tristan Wirfs
20) D’andre Swift
General gameplay: build in the trenches and on D, get a running game developed for whoever our QB will be and take a QB in 2021.

Id only trade down about two spots.. Chase Young isnt going to fall out of the top 5, hes the best player in college football.
im good with Wirfs as our second pick, something tells me this team is going to look at free agency to fix their offensive line and may draft a quarterback instead (Burrow). As for our third pick, i mean if Swift is the best player available then sure im good with that.. i think you may see them take a chance at someone like Dylan Moses.
as of today 3 quarterbacks will selected in the top 10 guaranteed. Tua, Joe and Justin.AGuyNamedAlex and mlb1399 like this. -

To me the easiest fix to our team is defense.
You draft Chase Young but you dont ignore the defensive line just because you picked him first overall. You add a defensive end free agent and now you got two beasts rushing the quarterback, along with a second year Wilkins.
Ngakoue from jacksonville
Dupree from Pittsburgh
Chris Jones from Kansas City
Leonard Williams from the Jets.
I think Bobby McCain is a keeper. Not sure if Reshad Jones is back next season.. devin mccourty may come in as a cheap vet that has experience with Flores.
add a linebacker like Shaq Thompson or Myles Jack and some depth at CB and your defense is good to go.
still draft dylan moses. -
I just don't see a reason to go through this type of year if you aren't taking a QB. If the front office doesn't believe the hype on Tua then trade back to a team in the top 5 that does and take the next QB. If we go through a tank season and take any other position then QB with our #1 pick... I'll need to look into some high blood pressure medication.

There is no way that the Dolphins don't draft a QB at #1 if they have the #1 pick. I also think that QB will be Tua.
Now, if the Dolphins somehow end up with the 2nd or 3rd pick, they should do everything they can to get Young and then try to get Fromm.
I'm not yet sold on Burrow, Herbert, or Love. That may change as the season goes on.resnor likes this. -
Trade all the picks for more picks. Future pucks, low round picks, conditional picks, whatever. We have too many holes. We’re going to need the equivalent of 4 drafts worth of talent, so listen to all offers and take any that give you multiple value. I don’t care if Tua ends up being the next great QB, we won’t be in position to win with him on his rookie deal with the base of the roster we have now.
-
To echo Pauly’s thoughts, we have so many holes I’m not even sure a good QB would be able to do much here. -
And just like everyone had Haskins as the second best QB last season, and the Giants went onto get Daniel Jones, that similar debate will come about with Joe and Tua. Who is the better prospect?
so why even trade up when the second guy is not that far off..
Mark your calendar, November 9th likely a night game. LSU/Alabama. Every NFL scout will be at that game. If Joe repeats what he did against arguably the best secondary in the nation (Florida) he may seal the first pick in that game. -

1a. Tua QB
1b. Trade down - Ideally it would include a 2nd this year and 1st in 2021 (More likely if there's some team trying to trade up for a QB they covet). If we can't trade down my favorite guys are Chase Young (obviously), Isaiah Simmons LB/S, Jerry Jeudy and Ceedee Lamb WRs, Grant Delpit S, Andrew Thomas OT.
1c. Creed Humphrey C -
I feel like this whole tanking process has been to draft Tua at #1. Whether that be right, wrong, good, bad, or fool-hearted is at moot point.
Although it is early, I have looked at several mock drafts, and it seems like they think we are going to draft heavily on skill positions. At the end of last season, Ross indicated that we are going to rebuild in the right way. To me, that starts in the trenches. I think that we are desperately in need of pass rushers and offensive line help. I think the greatest sin we had with Tannehill was that we never really gave him a strong offensive line to stand behind. I would go as far as to say that we should overcommit to this. Spend money and high draft capital. In doing this, it would give Tua the best possible chance to be successful. On the flip side of the ball, we need to work on pass rush. We need to be actively looking for the next man in our long line of pass rushers.
Like all plans, we should act within reason. If we have a player that grades out far above everyone else, obviously it would make sense to take him. If you are on the clock and see Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson, go ahead and make the move.
I wish that Grier realized that not all positions are created equally. Minkah is a great player, but nevertheless, the pick was questionable. Was a safety/nickel back really the most logical way to rebuild a struggling defense? When the Flores era began, our first pick was Christian Wilkins. Let's think back to when we had Suh. We had a potential Hall of Fame player in his prime, but was the defense dominant? Was he even the anchor of the defense? I would argue that Cam Wake was still the anchor. Interior defensive linemen would be great if it was 1996, but the NFL is a pass heavy league. We should be building accordingly. We need to strongly consider what the impact positions are and address them first.
I really see this rebuild in two phases:
Phase #1 2020 - Build the foundation. We build an identity where we own the trenches.
Phase # 2021 - Get the weapons. Now we are bringing in those flashy receivers. Remember, we have Parker and Wilson for this season and the next. They are serviceable. Amari Cooper could be a target in this offseason that would expedite the process. Instead of filling glaring holes, we are finding complements to our strong offensive line and pass rushers. -
The problem with the minkah pick is we didnt really have a need for his primary skill set. We already had a good nickel back and a good strong safety in bobby mcain and rechad jones. Those are the two positions minkah is best at, he is not as good at Free Safety or boundary corner which is why the minjah project failed when we tried to play him out of position.Last edited: Oct 23, 2019 -

Yeah, I'm going to disagree here. Get two great edge rushers and they can impact the QB with every snap of the ball, while I need to build a great secondary to force the QB to hold the ball longer so lesser pass rushers can get there. That means a secondary needs three good-great CBs and at least one really good cover safety. That's four secondary players I need to find versus just two pass rushers. Not to mention the cost of paying two guys versus four guys.
A course a combination of the above (one good pass rusher, two good CBs) could also work, and scheme is important too.
I agree that the Minkah pick was kinda puzzling and a minor failure even if we got a first rounder back for him. It was a luxury type of pick for a team that had a number of needs. Maybe it's just because I'm not over the pain of watching Jeff Ireland botch a team rebuild, but I'm concerned we still don't have the right people in place to wisely use all the high draft picks and massive cap space we'll have in 2020/2021.Tin Indian likes this. -
Yes it's harder to put together a quality defensive backfield than it is to get a couole of good pass rushers, but the payoff is higher IMO and should be a higher priority. -
The one advantage building a secondary should have is that you can in theory have a strong scheme based pass rush. Sometimes though it's going to come down to talent regardless of scheme. -
I hope you all are watching the guy in my avatar, Chase Young right now..
3 quarters in against one of the best offensive lines in the nation (Wisconsin).
3 sacks, 4 TFL, 1 forced fumble.
he is solidifying himself as the best player in the nation. He has lined up at DE, DT, opposite end, and linebacker. Hes picking them apart, all this while wisconsin is trying to neutralize him putting two guys in himmlb1399 likes this. -
K make that four sacks and two forced fumbles against a top 5 offensive line

Btw, Tua who? Alabama scoring 31 points with 10 minutes left in the SECOND quarter. Further proof that his supporting cast is that damn good. Of course Mac Jones struggled last week he never takes first team reps. One week of practice and Alabama is playing as well as they ever did the past two seasons.
