Moving forward, it is obvious that, while this offense has made strides in the right direction, there is something missing. Miami ranked high in getting into the red zone but the offense was pretty poor in converting those into TDs comparing them to the league average.
From reading posts, the consensus seems to point at a big 'back or a big wideout. I think either (or both) can help this team moving forward in this offense (assuming Lazor stays). But what if you only had the choice of one?
With free agency and the draft ahead, what offensive position would benefit this team more?
Please explain if you wish.
What position will benefit this offense more?

Both are big pieces needed for us to improve as an offense... I think a power RB is a higher priority, but they are cheaper and easier to find than a big physical WR, so I think we should spend more resources on the WR than the RB. I would go after a WR in the first rounds of the draft and a RB in the later rounds or in FA.

You get a good offensive line, this offense explodes with the talent we already have.mbsinmisc likes this. -

You want to make the large WR more of a draft priority IMO.
Such as in this past draft, had we tried to fill both needs, Kelvin Benjamin would have required using the 1st rounder, and we could have gotten a nice power back like Carlos Hyde in the 2nd or Andre Williams in the 3rd. We'd have needed a veteran stopgap at RT though, but could have signed Eric Winston. -
Agreed.
The RB is much easier to get and doesn't do anything for you unless you sure up the interior of the O-line. We also don't want to invest in a big-time guy because we're not looking to replace Miller, only provide ourselves with another option that compliments Miller.
The WR on the other hand could be a huge upgrade to the offense as it currently stands and is probably more expensive in terms of cap space and draft pick(s).
If we ditch Hartline and his $20M contract, then we have a hole at WR anyway.
Makes perfect sense.resnor likes this. -
OL makes every Rb better, if a big target Wr was on the board would take them , if not and I hate to say this finally finally knock the OL out of the park.
Do think the Wr corps is fine, Wallace/Landry/Bline adding another one w/o trading Hartline makes no sense.
Would not mind a Te tbh, Clay and Sims are good, adding a third would really elevate that unit -

I'd make WR and RB the second level of priority. I'm not saying fixing the line makes Wallace better, but if Tannehill has a little more time to throw, that may get fixed. I hate to see it happen again, but I'm fine with hearing "With the X pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins take Player X, G/T...." I'd like to see Sims involved more next year. He should be the red zone target. And as much as people want bombs away with Wallace, I like seeing him with YAC. Miller is fine. Better blocking and maybe sticking with the run at times, Miller will be perfect. But, a bruiser back would help. I'd rather have a bigger back than a WR, but Oline SHOULD be the priority. Again.

It is time to spend resources on the fire power..WR's 2 I am really liking....Devante Parker and Breshard Perriman..we can also select a back in later rounds like David Johnson or I Really hope Devon Johnson comes out..we could also sign Gore as FA. Then we can go G/T remembering we have a guy on our roster like that in Billy Turner..then S,CB,LB.

If those are the only choices I have, I'd choose wideout...however, any stud guy they get...OT, OG, DT, S, CB, LB...it really doesn't matter so long as our top two picks are hits, this team will be better...

Gordon is the only HB I'd consider in the first. So it may actually be possible to get both if you go WR in the first and take a big back later on. Personally I'd say WR is the bigger "need" though a HB like Gordon could do a LOT for this offense.
Also I'd prefer a guard in free agency. Perhaps a guard in the 4th round or later would be fine as well. In my opinion it's probably the easiest position to find a solid guy to plug-and-play. You're never upgrading the skill positions cheaply or easily in free agency so in my view you're really trying to find those guys in the draft. -
I am of the opinion that a big back would be more helpful to our offense, not just in the 3rd & 2 type situation as a runner, but also as an additional blocker (which should be one of the attributes sought!) A competent blocker/runner/receiver who could be effective on both running and passing downs would seem to be more likely to impact the offense on a consistent basis than a WR who will probably be somewhat less valuable on the drive maintaining 3rd down plays than a RB effective as a lead blocker, primary runner, pass catcher, or pass blocker in the backfield. I detest having to punt after a failed 3rd down and short situation!
-
I said bruiser back because those kind of RB's change how the D plays you on the whole field. It can open up 1 on 1's for those big WR's too. Not the other way around.
A big/ tall WR is just that, and you have to defend them the same. They help the team in certain situations, but RB's can control a game.
Would have been nice to see Moreno stay healthy to prove my opinion. -
-
weapons are useless if tannehill only has 3 seconds to throw.
-
I voted for the RB because I think the threat of a bruising back would open up the offense not only in the red zone but all over the field when its third and short. But I do agree that is not a position you need to spend a high draft pick or major coin in FA to fill.
-
Between the two WR is a no brainer. The way the league is today, totally slanted towards the passing game.
-
I think a big bruising RB would be more impactful, at least in the short term, but I think a big WR might be more of a necessity when you consider Hartline and Gibson may be cap casualties next year and that Wallace may be one after 2015.

I'd toss Mike Wallace's money at Jeremy Maclin, and hope Dion Sims continues to develop into the big-bodied receiver.

Easy. Power back. We need that guy who even when he gets hit in the backfield just seems to churn and fall forward for a 3 yard gain. We need that back that doesn't make 3rd down and 3 an automatic pass situation for this team.
However, both are needed and obtainable. In FA or the even later draft rounds you can find backs who can churn it.
WR we would have to go round 1 or 2. We don't just want a big target...we want a #1 guy that all of a sudden you just can't keep throwing a safety over Wallace. First 2 rounds I'll be happy with a tall WR and either a MLB/DT/CB pair up (depending on FA).resnor likes this. -
The big bruiser running back can also improve the blocking by leading the ball carrier and flattening filling linebackers. -
I actually think Miller has been really good at pushing piles, and getting an extra tough yard or two. If be interested to see what our third down rushing would have looked like if we'd had a halfway competent line. The poor line play didn't end at pass blocking.
-
I still think we need another back since I believe it's (for the most part) a two back league.
I am interested in David Johnson out of Northern Iowa. -
Mike Davis. He has power, good hands, and good blocker.
We definitely need a power back.

Ground and pound offense makes sense with Tanne's skillset and Lazor's offensive play calling. -
I went with bruiser back. IMO it's more difficult to scheme around a 3rd and short or goal situation where they know you need to run. The passing game has more options to get a smaller receiver open. Obviously I want both, but being forced to prioritize I think the bruiser back would have slightly more impact.

I want a big receiver for the red zone.
So for me, I'd like to see us shore up the oline and get a big target....then go all defenseresnor likes this. -
Both positions are huge priorities for this offense to take it to the next level, though. Good thing the draft is shaping up to have a nice group to chose from to fill those needs, specifically on the larger, receiving type. Would be great to find the big back in FA. -
-
I'd go with physical back 1 and WR 1A.
How would you guys feel about taking a shot at Mark Ingram? He's been on vacation the pat 4 yrs in Nawlins, he can run between the tackles, is durable, he and Miller could split 30 carries carries. Add to that a WR, my favorite right now is Devante Parker from Louisville. Thick build, 6'3", excellent ball skills and YAC ability, can block too.
Give me those two, re-sign Clay, add some depth for the interior OL and then go all defense.resnor likes this.
