Pitts - he's a bona fide game changer and maybe the best athlete in the draft.

 

1. Wilson or Lawrence - the whole rebuild is useless if you don't find your QB. No one will criticise two picks if you do. Everyone will criticise one pick if you don't.
2. Sewell - Too much potential impact on the whole offense to skip.
3. Pitts - Special guy.
4. Chase or Smith - can move on from expensive free agent if either one succeeds.
5. Trade Back 6-9 - Value!

If we make the pick, I'd like to nab Chase at #3. I'd prefer we drop (once) and take the player at 5-9 that we'd likely take at #3 anyway. If I was Grier, I'd do it for 5-9 and next year's 1st or 2nd round pick because we're going to have five top 90 selections to add to 9 or 10 second-year players. At some point, we're going to have too much youth. Great for competition (iron sharpens iron) but a terrible use of assets if we wind up cutting players that eventually start for other teams. I'd much prefer that a trade net us future assets instead of picks in this draft.

I think if they weren't 100% on Tua the best move would be to trade down and pick up a first next year. That way they still get top talent for Tua but it wouldn't be a nightmare scenario if he didn't work out.

How do you plan on picking Lawrence?

 

I see the draft as having three clearly elite prospects - Lawrence, Pitts and Sewell. By luck, we end up having a top three pick, so we're guaranteed a shot at one of those three no matter what if we stay put. And while I think that Lawrence is the best QB prospect to come along since Andrew Luck, I'd say the odds that he's there at #3 are about one in a million.

So, being realistic, my top choice is Pitts. I think that he is far and away the best positional prospect on offense in this class with a huge upside, and he's not even 21 years old yet. Take him, and develop him into the target that the passing game revolves around for the next decade, please.

However, I also think that Sewell is a fantastic prospect at OT, and he's also not even 21 yet. While I want Pitts, I'm not going to cry if we take Sewell instead. He's special, and he would help the OL for a long time to come.

After that, there's no option that I'm high on. Normally, I'm a big trade back guy. I've absolutely wanted t trade back every other time that we've had a top 5 pick in my time as a fan. However, I see the huge gulf in talent between those guys and the rest as too much to risk letting go of.

 

The idea of drafting a quarterback at #3 this year after picking Tua in the top 5 last year is silly in itself.

But to think that the unanimous #1 and #2 picks are going to be there at #3 is even more silly in itself.

How do I plan on picking Lawrence at 3? I don't plan on doing it. I would have thought everyone understood that in a thread like this everything is conditional. I would pick one of those two QBs if it turns out they're available. How likely is it? I've no idea. Depends on New York. If they don't take a WB or take a different QB then we'll be next. I would have thought that was obvious. Why do you think I listed other options? In case the first choice isn't there.

As for me being the only guy, I don't care. I don't think that's true, but even if it is, it's my preference. Deal with it. Also note, just preferring one move doesn't mean I wouldn't appreciate other moves. Do look up superlatives. You might find the concept helpful.

I would trade down, so we have 2 first round picks next year again that way we have the ammunition if Tua fails and it’s always good to have more picks, cause you never know what you‘re going to get in the end. If they stay at 3 it has to be Pitts, he is special. Everything else I wouldn‘t understand, he is one of a kind, Lawrence is the number 1 prospect but after that it‘s clearly Pitts.

I didn't like Tua coming out and nothing has changed my mind but I don't see them giving up on him since they all agreed to draft him..
Murray situation was a little different new coach who wanted his own Qb and it helped murray s style fitted his offence better that Rosen.
I really hope we trade down and get another 1st rd pick for 2022 in case Tua busts and move on next year

 

Both. I think that if you're commited to making that kind of investment in the first place, then barring some sort of long term injury, taking another QB high the following season is just wasteful madness. Either you didn't do enough work the first year, or you were just horribly wrong about the guy to such an extent that you'd give up after one season. Either way, it proves incompetence of the GM and/or coach.

And Josh Rosen had one of the worst rookie seasons in NFL history as well as having the amazing stat of having not one game with a QB rating of over 90. Jamarcus Russell was able to get over 90 rating his rookie year and he started two games.

I know QB rating isn't perfect but Rosen ended with a 66.7 rating after starting 13 games with 3.6% interception percentage.

 

I agree with trading back just far enough to get a first rd pick for next year and get Tua some legit competition if we miss the playoffs due to clearly "Ho Hum" QB play. Let's not drag this out for 6-7 years and multiple HCs.

 

Trading back into the 5-9 range would be my preference - I think the offers will be there if we want them.

If we stay at 3, it's hard to not see Sewell, especially with Isaiah Wilson washing out the way he did. However, I am definitely coming around to Pitts. I was listening to former NFL lineman Jon Jansen on the radio today (he's a local host in Detroit) saying he would draft Pitts over Sewell, and for an actual OL to say that ... well that's an endorsement. Essentially, the argument he gave is that Pitts isn't a TE, is more of a WR and will just present too many matchup problems from all over to pass up. He made the same comparison that CK has been making - Calvin Johnson.

The reason why I am willing to trade down despite that is because there is LOTS of good pass catching talent in this draft from top down, and we could use the ammo, it never hurts to stockpile future picks. Plus ... as good as Calvin was, he never lead Detroit to anything. Pass catchers - even elite/game changing types - are often just not building blocks. I dunno man.
