Through two games Ryan Tannehill has been sacked 9 times and hit another 12 times. That's 21 impacts, good for 4th most times a QB has been plowed by a defensive player of all NFL QBs.
That projects to 168 sacks and hits on Ryan Tannehill this season.
Generally, when a player takes that much of a physical beating week in and week out, they either wear down late in the season or get injured and miss time.
Do you think Ryan Tannehill makes it through this season without a serious injury that causes him to miss time? This week we saw him tweak his shoulder, getting hit as he threw. It seems minor, but it makes you think.
The solution is a combination of the O-line improving their pass protection, Tannehill improving his pocket awareness to slide away from pressure, and the coaches helping him with designed protection (keeping backs in, etc) and playcalls that put him at less risk (shorter drops, etc).
But for now, I want to hear your opinion: Does Ryan Tannehill make it through this season without serious injury?
[Before anyone says I am jinxing this by mentioning it, the 21 hits Ryan has already taken speak for themselves.]

And by the way... I really am not into doomsaying, but it would be lying to ourselves (and pretty immature) to not be capable of looking at something even the coaches must be aware of... you can't let a QB get hit this much and expect him to survive a season.
I didn't want to say "serious injury" in the title, because it sounds exagerrated and negative.. but if I said injury then I knew, just knew, some doofus would show up and say 'he already got his shoulder hurt'. And clearly, what I am talking about is something that will cause him to miss time.
I think, personally, that the oline improves enough, and coaches help him enough with short passes and extra protection, that he survives.
The downside to this is, you will not see Ryan Tanehill using his legs to run and hurt defenses much, if at all. Why? Because there is no way this staff is dumb enough to open him to more physical punishment. YOu may see a run or maybe two a game, if he decides to escape the pocket.. but how can you add read option, in any serious dose, to your playcalling if he's already getting whacked an average of 10 times per game as it is? -

What you said has different meaning where I come from. For example: Lucky's boyfriend has been plowed by every college guy looking to experiment.
Hmm, you know, now that I think of it.....its exactly the same thing, never mind.Section126, Frumundah Finnatic, Bpk and 1 other person like this. -
This thread holds water. Its a legitimate question at the rate he's getting hit. I should've voted no because the injury Tannehil is going to lay on opposing defenses but I voted too quickly. :)
I'll say this, I won't put it all on the oline. Tannehil has had plenty of chances to throw the ball away. It's an instinct he doessn't yet have. You have to give him props for staying in the pocket as long as he has. He's fearless. The happy feet are gone. But he's gotta have fox feet aswell. Sly out of that pocket. Get outside the tackles. Throw the gosh darn thing away.mbsinmisc, inFINSible and maynard like this. -

I not only say yes he will stay healthy. I also say that poor line play will serve as a developmental aid to his game. It will teach him to get the ball out faster. I fully expect him to have a release as fast as Marinos by the end of this season. Hows that for some homer optimism :tongue2:

Curious about the 12 hits though. I'm not getting that many off PFF. Whose reporting 12 hits?
Clabo 3/0/6
Jerry 1/2/4
Pouncey 1/0/0
Incognito 1/0/0
Martin 1/1/6
Clay 0/0/1
Thomas 1/0/0
Miller 1/1/1
That's 9 sacks/4 hits/14 hurries. Clabo is a definite issue that I wonder if we don't see Yeatman/Garner at some point. Jerry only gave up 2 sacks and 3 hits all of last year. So his year this far is concerning. I don't know if Watson can be the answer there as his pass protection in Philly was poor also. We need to see some growth out of Martin also at some point this year or it may be time to move on from him.
Either way were up for an overhaul on the line next year with so many free agents.
By the way the average time of sack on Tannehill is 3.63 seconds according to PFF's Quarterback Time in Pocket stats. -
I think it's a valid question or concern although impossible to predict. I think the root of the OP's question is we need to start protecting him. Our OT's need to start stepping up their game as well as RTH. Our RB's have also whiffed on some blitzes and they need to get better. He needs to get rid of the ball quicker in blitz situations or run when too much time goes by.
Maybe it's time to do some more max protect or 3 man routes. We have the receivers to make plays.Paul 13 likes this. -
if the oline doesnt improve he will be nursing injuries. hopefully nothing serious but this is going to be a rough year for him

But while we are on solutions, you have to figure that improved play from Martin and Clabo would probably account for 1.5 less sacks per game and probably as many fewer hits. (For the person who asked, I got the hits stts from NFL.com's team stats on Offensive Line play: sacks and QB hits surrendered)
If John Jerry improved, you're probably looking at 0.5 sacks per game and another hit per game.
Tannehill himself could probably eliminate a sack per game and a couple hits with a combination of being more decisive, and mainly by having better pocket awareness and sliding away from pressure, not into it.
Finally, the coaches calling shorter passes, and keeping more people in to block could be a last resort. I'd do it sparingly as once you pull an offense back into a shell it can compound the problem in my opinion because the offense gets easier to defend and then stalls. That leads to fewer points. Which leads to playing from behind. Which leads to a lot more throwing under non ideal conditions, downs and distance just to try to catch up. That lets defensive linemen pin their ears back and attack the QB. Which ends up badly for us again anyways.
To me, a little more protection help is fine, but I'd avoid going too far with that.
Ultimately, I think by mid season this pace of hits and sacks is halved and Tannehill makes it through the season. -
If Sims and Egnew can get themselves more involved, we can get defenses to be more on their heels. As it is, seeing Egnew and Sims on the field means they are very likely going to be blocking. They can also help the short passing game over the middle. IMO, if there are players on your roster you need to use them or at least test them a bit. If Egnew cant go out and catch a few balls, then it is a roster failure. At the very least you run him out a few times. Same with Sims. It's the only way you can figure out what you have, IMHO
I might be having a bit of Sparano hangover here because he never trusted his players. I think there is an issue when only your top 4 guys are getting all the targets. All good teams spread the ball around. Defenses pick up on this and it makes you more predictable, which in the end can hurt your pass protection.Bpk likes this. -

I voted "No" based on the current rate he is taking hits. That should/must change in the near future. Whether by scheme (more help blocking from backs/TEs or even an extra OL guy) or from the current OL group improving as a unit. Tannehill should have a very good year if they keep him healthy, and it would be great to see. We do have probably the best back-up QB in the league though, so we can weather 2-3 games with Matt starting.

I say no he will be on the sideline I just hope it's not serous and he can rebound in good health with no tears or broken bones and his time on the bench is short. Just to many hits getting to him one way or another some divisional team will cheap shot him when exposed.
-
Well, after two games, he already had some damage to his throwing shoulder, two things need to happen for preventive measures to take hold, the whole oline needs to get pissed off and take it personally, and Ryan must do a better job incorporating his athleticism to maneuver the pocket.

I voted yes because that's what I want to happen but, the kid needs to seriously find some rush awareness pretty quickly. Half the time he gets hit it's his own damn fault for standing in one spot or for moving right into a rusher. It's one weakness that I truly worry about with him. I'm not sure if that's something that can be taught.

I want to see him incorporate it into his game because I believe when playoff football arrives, playmaking ability, escapability from the Qb position becomes more critical.inFINSible likes this. -
I don't think it will ever be a strength of his, but for a guy who is just now getting to his 40th start (college and pro combined)
I expect he will keep improving in this regard.
As he improves pocekt awareness and movement, I think you see his sack totals drop by 1 sack a game.inFINSible likes this. -
I do agree that he still has a long way to go, however, before this is no longer a weakness of his. You rightly point out that he has a lot of areas he is trying to improve upon. This is what happens when a guy had only a half-college-career at QB. It's smart for him to focus on imporving one skill or two at a time, not all of them at once.
And I don't think he will be allowed to be a dual threat by this coaching staff until he is taking less punishment in the pocket. His body doesn;t need the extra hits. If you look at how well he is playing as a passer this season, though, you have to say, the coaching staff is doing something right in developing this kid.mbsinmisc likes this. -
Not sure how the protection or lack of it is playing into that, other than what I mentioned above, with him getting hit so much already that I am guessing the staff has a philosophy of not purposely designing runs for Ryan. -

I wonder if Sherman has beat it into RT's head that he needs to be a pocket passer so much that RT will not run even given the opportunity. I am one of the people who hate the idea of exposing your QB to the abuse of the read option. I love a smart athletic QB who can pick up a couple of important 3rd downs a game especially score points inside the 10 if he avoids contact. No first down or score is worth losing your QB for a month
