So, we know we have the 19th pick in the 2014 draft. Which direction do we go?

If Ireland still the GM, probably a guard that could otherwise be drafted in the mid to late rounds.

The 19th pick. Great. Because we all know that's a lucky number for this franchise...
ASOT, Hobiesailor, MikeHoncho and 5 others like this. -

OT Cameron Erving FSU, OT Taylor Lewan Michigan, or ILB C.J. Mosley Alabama.

Vernon Carey was all right as the 19th pick (just passed on a HOFer, and traded up to do so).
-
We have to go O-line.

Happy Monday......the NY Jets pick 18th

Who cares? Until I know Ireland won't be making the pick, I won't get excited about it.

Beast, red zone threat for Tannehill. Great compliment to Clay. Plus Ebron is just one letter short from Lebron so it's just fitting he comes to Miami.Paul 13, ExplosionsInDaSky, Georgia Fin and 1 other person like this. -
I think they would give Keller another shot. He was looking like a beast before that assclown put his helmet on his knee. Probably could get him cheap and RT already has some chemistry with him. Keller and Clay would have been a tandem that would have won us a few more games.

Talking more about this:
There was a pretty solid #19 at WR but he also proved to be bad luck when an idiot GM traded him away for peanuts. -

In my opinion, he is stronger, faster, more athletic, better hands. He would have definitely gone ahead of Eifert who I also like. Not sure he gets past the 10th pick, and if the Jets pick in front of us they will definitely snatch him before we get him.. The player might also consider himself a wide receiver at some point since he does a lot of damage at the slot like Graham does for the Saints. I think he would be perfect for us and we're all hoping other teams have other needs and he falls. -
And Ted Ginn and his family are now solid contributors in Carolina.... 5Td's 556 yards. Pretty good for a 3rd or 4th WR used only as a burner.Fin-Omenal likes this. -
Not in the first but later on in the 4th or 5th I want a big bruiser powerback. Maybe Jeremy Hill from Lsu or Carlos Hyde from OSU

Might be in the market for Ka'Deem Carey or Bishop Sankey in the 2nd Round at #51
Also if we have the opportunity to grab him, I want Kelvin Benjamin. Dude is a monster. -
dolphin fans are the only fans that can want to pass on a playmaker to keep on drafting olinemen . yes it is a need but we always seem to draft oline in rd 1 and it has the same results nadda. take the best player and take a cheaper olineman so we can have better playmakers.
-
Jeremy Hill might not come out, but if he does, I doubt he lasts to the 4th or 5th.
-
Im not sure I understand the want to draft a TE in the first round. Clay proved to be very worthy of that position. You hope that Sims continues to develop. I see much bigger needs here than a TE in the first round. OL... Hell, I'd like a big bodied, athletic, dynamic WR similar to Jeffery (Still pisses me off we took baby Martin over him in '12). A LB or CB would be nice too. We have alot of needs, especially along that OL, I dont see TE being the best choice there.

The last two linemen we took in rd 1 were (or have been) top 5 at their position during their tenures for our team. And we've taken 3 OL in the 1st rd in the past decade. That's hardly "always" IMO, especially considering OL is almost 25% of your starters between O and D.Mile High Fin likes this.

Sankey and Carey are great backs but too small. Miller will be better with a better oline but we need a real Eddie lacy type Bruiser that always falls forward -
I don't think anyone wants to knock Clay out of the way, but just giving the offense another weapon and some much needed size in the red zone.
-
I about 95% certain they go OL with the 1st pick. Lucky for us it appears this year that the dolphins will have their pick of some decent ones. A lot of the teams in front of us need help in other areas beside OL.
-
The first thing we need to do is execute in free agency. Well technically the first thing we need to do is figure out who our coaches are and who our GM is, and THEN we need to execute in free agency.
It's so early in the draft process it's hard to say who will be the pick at #19. Scratch that, impossible to say. We don't even know which guys will shake out to be the top 20 or 25 talents in the draft let alone what Miami's needs are, or whether they'll continue picking for need (Ireland is an unabashed needs picker) or if they'll insist on going after the best player on the board.
For instance someone mentioned Morgan Moses, I don't believe he's rated anywhere near that pick at the moment but then again as I said it's really early so fast forward four months from now and maybe he will be.
Some players that I really like that could go in that area include:
TE Jace Amaro, Texas Tech
TE Troy Niklas, Notre Dame (no indication he's thinking of coming out)
WR Mike Evans, Texas A&M
WR Sammy Watkins, Clemson
OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M
OT Greg Robinson, Auburn
OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Alabama
OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan
OT Cameron Erving, Florida State
DT Ra'Shede Hageman, Minnesota
DT Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh
LB Khalil Mack, Buffalo
LB Ryan Shazier, Ohio State
CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan StateMile High Fin, Ducken, ssmiami and 2 others like this. -
I don't see Philbin or a OC of his hiring making a big commitment to a two-TE based offense.Mile High Fin likes this.

Good thing Clay can be FB then. :wink2:
Seriously though, in the preseason didn't we come out a lot with both Clay and Keller in the fold? -
I watched Ebron play in their bowl game a few days ago. The dude has major skill and looks like he's going to be a star in the NFL.
-

Same general deal, that's basically a commitment to that personnel package. Or, at least it should be. Clay shouldn't be off the field much.
-
I agree, Ebron just looks like a can't miss to me. I don't always agree with drafting need over talent. We needed Jake Longs replacement in the last draft and the signs all pointed to Lane Johnson being the guy we pick but we went with Dion Jordan instead. I know Ireland made the pick or whatever and while Johnson has been more productive right now at the moment, I think Jordan is the more talented of the two.
I think unless we have an absolute franchise mainstay at a position on this team we shouldn't be drafting for need. We should be drafting talent, and looking for players that have a chance to be special in this league. Ebron certainly looks like a stud to me at the next level, and i'll take a potential franchise position player over need any day. I do agree with you though, Dion Sims and Egnew both fit the description physically for their position. Maybe we see what they can do next season, maybe we stay the course with Clay, maybe Keller comes back. -
Fair enough, as much as I'd like that too, given the state of our OL, I think that should be a more important area to focus on.
The more I think about our draft options, the more I think we have so many needs, its not possible to fill them all, as usual. I don't think this roster is presently as good as many people think. There's quite a few bright spots, yes, but there's some glaring issues too I think, and probably too many to address. -
I think that Mike Evans, Jake Matthews, Greg Robinson, Khalil Mack and Darqueze Dennard will be gone by the time Miami picks.
It's a fair question whether Cyrus Kouandjio, Taylor Lewan, Sammy Watkins and Ra'Shede Hageman will also be gone, to be honest.
So that would probably leave Miami looking at Cameron Erving, Jace Amaro, Eric Ebron, Aaron Donald and Ryan Shazier.
I think the need pick is obviously Erving. If it's Lewan or Kouandjio I could perhaps even get behind it as somewhat of a BPA as well as a position of need. But I don't know that Erving stacks up with those guys on a BPA basis and I think there are opportunities at the position to be had later in guys like Billy Turner and Wesley Johnson on the left side, JaWuan James and Seantrel Henderson on the right side.
For me if all those guys I mentioned were gone by #19 then it would be between Jace Amaro and Aaron Donald. I think Ra'Shede Hageman could be gone already but that's kind of a pet theory. If he's there then I'd be between Amaro, Donald and Hageman.ssmiami likes this. -
I don't think its that easy though, dont forget all of our own current players who need to be re-signed too, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
