Dolphins coach Brian Flores has become the first NFL coach to issue a statement on the murder of George Floyd. And it is a powerful one.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...-colin-kaepernick-are-silent-on-george-floyd/
“I’ve had the privilege of being a part of many different circles that have included some very powerful and influential people of all different races and genders,” Flores said. “The events of the last few weeks have brought some of the memories of those conversations back to light. I vividly remember the Colin Kaepernick conversations. ‘Don’t ever disrespect the flag’ was the phrase that I heard over and over again. This idea that players were kneeling in support of social justice was something some people couldn’t wrap their head around. The outrage that I saw in the media and the anger I felt in some of my own private conversations caused me to sever a few long-standing friendships.
“Most recently, I’ve had conversations about incentivizing teams for hiring minorities. Again, there was some outrage in the media and talks that this would cause division amongst coaches, executives and ownership. I bring these situations up because I haven’t seen the same OUTRAGE from people of influence when the conversation turns to Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and most recently George Floyd. Many people who broadcast their opinions on kneeling or on the hiring of minorities don’t seem to have an opinion on the recent murders of these young black men and women. I think many of them QUIETLY say that watching George Floyd plead for help is one of the more horrible things they have seen, but it’s said amongst themselves where no one can hear. Broadcasting THAT opinion clearly is not important enough.
“I lead a group of young men who have the potential to make a real impact in this world. My message to them and anyone else who wants to listen is that honesty, transparency, and empathy go a long way in bringing people together and making change. I hope that the tragedies of the last few weeks will open our hearts and minds to a better way of communicating and hopefully create that change.” End quote
“Change definitely is needed. The decision of the coach of an NFL team to issue such a strong and heartfelt statement underscores that the time has come for reform, for better training, for more prudent use of lethal force by law enforcement.
“If the murder of George Floyd doesn’t spark that change, what will? Here’s hoping that influential voices in the NFL and other aspects of society continue to call for change, ignoring the stick-to-sportsters who presumably (and inexplicably) prefer the status quo.”
I am very proud of our head coach, I knew this man was special but man, lead the way sir..We are very lucky to be able to call him our coach.

I can never understand the excessive force thing. If the situation is under control, why beat the hell out of someone?

I think the real problems are training methods and a lack of discipline within police departments to weed out the racist and violent behavior. Nobody is policing the police. The officers involved here had multiple incidents on their record with no disciplinary action taken. When officers get away with **** so many times they start to think they are untouchable.Last edited: May 30, 2020rafael, Surfs Up 99, resnor and 1 other person like this. -
I am saddened by the things happening in this country. This year has been a setback to our nation. With the pandemic, and the various examples of racist terrorism we have seen the past couple weeks.. and now to see the country basically go in a civil war. We have a president tweeting blatant racist remarks. This has been a terrible start to a new decade, and hopefully we improve rather than keep going backwards.
I cant find any way to place blame at the people causing the riots.. they’re angry, and they’re sending a message. When they protest peacefully, there is another side of the country that tells them they’re wrong for doing so, and now they’re telling them the same thing again. Trying to control the way they’re suppose to express themselves all the time, they’ve had enough and this is the lashing out.resnor likes this. -
I'm also starting to sound like a liberal, but I'm also convinced that the vast majority of officers don't need to carry a gun on their hip. I think that the uniform should be more casual, think polos and khakis, and they can carry a taser and pepper spray. I think that alone would go a long way in changing how officers interact with citizens, which would go a long way in building better relationships between officers and the citizens that they are supposed to be serving. Certainly officers could have a gun in the car, that could be used if it's actually necessary, but I would have a significant and open review process for all incidences where an officer took that gun out of the car.
I'm sorry if I steer this in the political direction, but I'm very concerned about the police Using lethal force so often against all the citizens of this country. -
so now let’s be real here and point out whats blatantly bad. We have a president that has given racists a platform since the beginning of his campaign. He’s hesitated to denounce KKK endorsements before, started the birther movement which was clear racism. And now he incited the black race by calling them thugs and threatened that there will be shooting if theres looting. This all falls on him. I actually never seen a President have a worst fourth year on their presidential run.hitman8 likes this. -

That's my coach! Hell of a man, that's what you call leadership. I see the kneeling slightly differently, but I'm onboard 100% with everything else he said...props Coach!
And oh by the way, Vertical, in 2015 Obama called rioters thugs as well...he a racist too? Or is it OK 'cuz he's black? Racism happens in all directions. I don't believe either one of them are racist by stating obvious facts.Den54 likes this. -

Man I was on pins and needles waiting for a football coach to give his statement. Whew!
Same city, 2017 white female yoga instructor killed by black cop after she called to report a crime. Paid leave, 8 month investigation, 12 years in jail. No statements from coaches, Kapersuck etc...
RIP Justine Damond and George Floyd.

I'd have been upset by that also, if it had made the mainstream.
There is a problem with the use of lethal force by police officers, against all Americans.Last edited: Jun 1, 2020 -

It's been clearly established that political threads aren't appropriate.
I honestly wish we could have these discussions here but the evidence is in and we can't, at least not without it getting very toxic.
Flores being the Dolphins coach and this being tied to the identity of the Dolphins here's what we'll do. The thread will stand as is but it will be locked for further discussion.
If deemed appropriate it might get pinned for a short while so that people can see it.Simon likes this.
