Would make perfect, perfect sense to me if they really had this in mind.

They're moving up for Johnson.
I bet they just do a deal to get to 6 and be done with it.Boomer likes this. -
Just as a warning I listened to the Darlington segment and he didn't really say anything of note that would lead anyone to believe that the Dolphins are trading up for Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson. Vague references to the Dolphins continuing their boldness in free agency into the draft and needing to address the tackle issue and the corner issue but also needing to address leadership, perhaps in free agency. But he actually said he expects them to continue to focus on the skill positions in the draft rather than go back to looking at meat and potatoes positions.
So really this report breaks down to Daniel Jeremiah's report. Nothing Darlington said supports it.Mile High Fin, Bpk, Da 'Fins and 1 other person like this. -
Here is Daniel Jeremiah's note:

A move up from 12 to 6 would cost about the #54 pick according to the classic value chart. FWIW.

I could see them jumping up to 10 on draft day if Lane Johnson fell to there, that's only about 100 points in the draft chart and the Titans have a lot of needs, other than that i cant imagine there are a lot of trade up targets. A lot will depend on remaining free agency i imagine, if they bring in someone like Winston i imagine they'll be more confident picking at 12 or even trading down, if not a tackle becomes a big priority and they have to consider moving up; maybe to 6 to make sure they get their guy.

personally i´m still dreaming about the tavon austin pick, but moving up so high and "only" giving up #54 would be ok, the pick itself would again not very sexy, since they praise the "we wanna score more", "we need more explosive plays" , i rather get someone who scores TD´s or gets the ball for us -
If we trade up I think there's as much or more of a chance it'd be for a pass rusher than a left tackle considering our interest in Dumervil etc. Perhaps Jordan or Ansah. -

If I'm trying to figure out what Miami is thinking at 12...I think it would be:
1. Lane Johnson
2. Jarvis Jones
3. Tank Carradine
4. Xavier Rhodes
5. Tyler Eifert
That's what I see for now. Not my list, theirs. It's "fluid" (which means I'll change my mind at any time)...but those are among the guys I think they're looking at. I still don't know that I really believe the Tavon Austin talk.Jcouch1021 likes this. -
Darlington & Jeremiah: Miami Looking to Trade UP? (speculation)
I'd love to know what Miami really thinks about Jonathan Martin. That would really help.ToddPhin likes this. -
Yeah, we've added Gibson, but he's not the type of player that screams "Ok, we're all set at WR", and IMO if we hadn't signed him and only have Wallace & Hartline, I don't think any of us would look at that as being good enough b/c even with Gibson we're back to being a weak & unexplosive receiving corps should Wallace get hurt..... and regardless of how much we paid Hartline he's still Hartline, although I think it was a necessary evil to pay him that much to ensure we have at least one reliable, possession receiver who has existing chemistry with Tannehill. Bess will be gone so I don't treat him as a reason to not draft a WR high. Plus Gibson was the 3rd best receiver in a bad Rams receiving cast, so for me I look at it as, "We have Hartline & Wallace as long term pieces, but only one of those is a difference maker, and there are plenty of teams who possess a more potent 1-2-3 punch." For me, in an ideal world, we'd have Wallace, Austin/Patterson, and Hartline as our 3 primary receivers with Gibson as the backup, and if we want to run an up tempo offense with a vertical guy like Wallace running lots of sprints we'll need those extra bodies to rotate in.
We've already tipped our hand in FA that boosting the receiving corps and adding offensive weapons is a priority, so why stop there when we can add another one who can ease into the offense while Gibson is here to pull up any temporary slack? -
Dwight Freeney

Trade up for a tackle
Take a CB in the 2nd round
Not a bad plan. They've always used their first round pick on a glaring need. This wouldn't surprise me. It makes sense if you think about it. Draft where the talent is, sign where the talent is. -

I've said it from the start...no matter how much I love Cordarrelle Patterson, I give Miami AT BEST a 1 in 20 chance of being onto him and drafting him at 12. Said that well before free agency started, well before it was even believable that the Dolphins were onto Mike Wallace in free agency.
As for Tavon Austin I've said my peace there about why I don't think THEY are interested. I think there's some wishful thinking going on here. -
-
IMO Austin is at the top of Miami's list. After that I see Werner and maybe Jones depending on what they think of his stenosis. Then Vacarro and maybe Eifert. While I understand the allure of the Ts, I just don't get the impression that they're the team's focus. I think #12 is all about playmakers.
-
I don't think it will be Werner, not with Olivier in camp, they rarely draft ahead of the following yrs FA
Notice VD and Smith both came up for FA or close to it, and VD was peddled and Smith allowed to leave, this yr Odrick's FA is upcoming making Werner a man w/o a clear position.
Offensive lineman really does fit what Ireland does, we added 2 Wr's plus the 2 we have, we added Keller and have Clay in camp, so Te would make no sense imo.
Rb is out, Lb as well, we are running out of guys who fit what Ireland's pattern has been aside from OL and Cb, both positions of potential need, both high priced in FA which is something he takes into account.
Why pay Long or Smith 7 million when the Cap basically costs the salary cap what..1/3rd of that for both if you draft them and play them the 600 or snaps each?
IMO though, this is where Ireland goes wrong, it's fine to be the accountant, the league is all about playmakers. -
Great, not only does it look like we're ready to draft O-line again in round 1.....we're going to trade up to do it ? NOT HAPPENING. Smoke Screen.

No one that I can see, even if Misi moves to MLB, DE?
Not likely, not with Odrick and Vernon in camp
Worse ideas than trading back BUT we are reaching the point of so many picks and so few roster slots which is also the 49ers problem, if we make a move with them it speaks volumes about the roster in Philbin's view, basically we are rebuilding all of our depth at that point, or most of it, 11 picks or so? -
-
If Miami wants to pick up a DE in the draft i'd be much happier with Alex Okafor in the 2nd then anyone in the 1st. Outside of the tackles there simply isn't a lot of top 5 talent in this draft, move down a few spots and we can still get a real player like Austin or Eifert, not a lot of players i'd move up for and that includes Milliner. If we want some corners; Banks at 54 and maybe Hayden later on would be worth a look.

NFL doesn't work like that R4, it's sort of kill or be killed.
Rb is not to much of an issue if one looks at the Rb Fa class, I suspect we should buckle our seatbelts and wait for what we've come to expect from His Obtuseness, OL, Cb, core positions blah blah blah.
A brief burst of action with Wallace, now I suspect we see LT/Cb/G/Cb/De etc -
I read it there. Chances are, not credible.
However it would fit a wild and crazy draft plan. -

Has Miami even sniffed a RB in free agency? None that I know of, hence my concern. Especially if they are looking at guys like Giovani Bernard and Andre Ellington (both have met with Miami). I wouldn't trust either of them to carry the load should something happen to Miller. Daniel Thomas is what he is, which is not much. Jonas Gray is a question mark. -
IMO, Darlington has heard the same thing as well, as he has already stated that Miami's draft plans are intriguing, and he's now saying that they will continue to target skill position players rather than meat and potato guys.
I think by ignoring the interest in Tavon Austin, you would basically be trying to think a little too much about things and will ultimately outsmart yourself.
The fact is, Tavon Austin is the type of player that Jeff Ireland has CRAVED bringing to Miami. IMO, he will see this as his second chance to get a Percy Harvin type of player without getting the headaches with Percy Harvin. I think Joe Philbin is on board with this too, as it would give him four legitimate receivers, two of which can make big plays either by running vertical routes or taking a short pass to the house, while the other two are strong chains movers. -

It simply is difficult to say. I think Ireland has to be looking at LT - because of who he is and they will see protecting Tannehill, at this point, as a premium.
I don't think Ireland thinks that far outside the box. I think he is still a very regimented thinker (who tinkers and risks here and there and thinks he's being bold).
So, I think Ireland is thinking this:
Austin won't be an option at 12 because Ireland is a rigid thinker; not a progressive, attack thinker. It's against his nature. He will be afraid to. He may even - deep down (even though he knows they are entirely different players) - be reminded of Ted Ginn and that will prevent him from going after Austin. It is possible he will if they traded down, other guys were off the board, and they landed him at 18 or so (not likely but that's what I think would have to happen).
I don't agree with this scenario or thinking; but I do think this is what Ireland is thinking. -
We will see come draft time though. IMO, if you aren't seriously interested in a player, you wouldn't spend as much time scouting said player the way Miami has scouted Tavon Austin. It is reminiscent of how they scouted Ryan Tannehill last year and how they scouted Percy Harvin, who was a much bigger risk due to his character, in 2009.
