I don't care if he plays another preseason game.
Dion Jordan must have a monster year for us. That is the bottom line. -
We can be a playoff team this year and Dion Jordan can never play a down.....and you'd still not chnage a single thing about your posts would you?Rocky Raccoon, PhinsRock, Marco and 6 others like this. -

Long term health obviously the most important thing here.

what a weak article/blurb. so, he might miss some preseason time. big deal if he's going to only be a situational player for us this season.

I've not gone into a season hoping a rookie would play lights out. It's always awesome to see it happen (RGIII, Wilson, AJ Green, etc...) but it's always best to assume the rookies will have zero impact in year 1. As long as DJ gets bigger and stronger, more experience, I'm happy with that.

At any rate, the long term health is the issue, not the preseason... -
My expectations for Jordan all along have been as a nickel pass-rusher. If he can give the team 7-10 sacks, that would be a successful rookie year IMO.

Now having said that, I hear some say he HAS to have a monster rookie year like they think that matters some how. Do you think if he has 2 sacks for the year and doesn't start until the last two games of the season THIS year, but goes on to become a HOFer and lead the league in sacks 5 of the next 10 years that it was some how a mistake to trade up to draft him?? I mean REALLY!!! I know we live in a microwave age, where everyone wants everything 5 minutes ago, and can't stand to wait on ANYTHING, but in the grand schme of things, just how important is a player's rookie year??
I can remember not too long ago when the conventional wisdom said you NEVER started a rookie at any point. Some coaches made comments like "it will cost you at least one game for every rookie you start". Now there are those who say if it doesn't come in ready to play from the first game you overdrafted him. I just don't understand that kind of thinking, please help me understand.
Obviously there are no sure things. If he is a bust then he is a bust, and to be honest I think he has a fairly high chance of being just that. But if he turns out to be as good as a lot of people think, if he turns out to be the best defensive player in this draft class, does it really matter to some of you if he has a bad rookie year?? Will that make Jeff wrong for drafting raw talent that needs more than a year to get used to playing in the NFL??PhinsRock, cuchulainn, Da 'Fins and 2 others like this. -

Good points, NC
Instant gratification has cost more than one GM and/or coach his job. Everyone looks at Wilson or RG3 and says "why not our guy" (whoever that is) and it's just not that simple. Those guys are exceptions, not the rule... Look at Cam Wake a few years ago...He was just a guy we picked up from Canada that had flunked out of his NFL shot a few years before. In his first year, he was a 3rd down rushing specialist and had to work on his run support because he was NOT very good at it...amazing how things have changed for that kid and now he's a star in the league... Maybe, just maybe the same will be said about Jordan in 3 yrs, but that still doesn't erase the reality that he may or may not have a major impact this year....PhinsRock, cuchulainn and NCFINFAN like this. -
All the more motivation for OV to blow up. I really want to see how much he improves this year.

Obviously, barring a long-term shoulder (or other) injury, he's going to get on the field and make some plays, which will be exciting and everyone wants to see. But coaching and hard work matter in football, so yeah, he should be good this year (how good remains to be seen) but get better over the year and in the next few years to where he's a force on our defense for close to a decade. That's the hope, anyway.PhinsRock, Larryfinfan and NCFINFAN like this. -

It's still almost a month to the first game so there is a lot of time and I agree with others. I never thought of Jordan as a player who would be ready to start. He's simply not strong enough - especially without having had a season of heavy lifting. He's a spot player who can rush the passer and along with others the Aldon Smith comparison has been in the minds of many since the hour Jordan was drafted. Even if he gets half of Smith's production as a spot player he can add a lot to the D.

I'd say being overly cautious is the right route...IMHO. I'm not dying to see him rush back and blow that shoulder out for good because it wasn't developed properly. THAT would be 100% bust, and it would be the team's fault. Who gives a damn if he doesn't even start at all this year, if it means he's healthy going forward and learns a ton from Cam? Would LOVE to see him out there, but not at the expense of ending his career stupidly.

We have a game manager young quarterback. This offense needs the D to win games. And he was drafted to and needs to be there at the edge creating pressure, turnovers, and stops. If he is not, he is a busted #3 pick. -
-
Dez is right - He better have an impact this season. Jarvis Jones will and we wouldn't have had to cast off a 2nd rounder for him.
I don't see what it so hard to see that drafting Jordan and his Shoulder surgery with the 3rd overall pick was dumb. He better be a HOFer and the sooner the better, for Ireland's sake.TooGoodForDez likes this. -
Goodness no, he's in the Cam Wake circa 2009 role, his job is to kick some Qb butt in situational play, besides truth be told Baby Squid has been as impressive if not moreso, so there also is no rush to put him on the field as a starter.
What would be interesting to me is if our Will goes down, would he then start in replacement of say Wheeler?
I suspect he would tbh -

The coaches have already said they want Jordan playing all over the place, in several roles...he's already shown he can impact the run D (albeit that happened against 2s, but he has the instincts). Based on those expectations, they need to VERY carefully tread the rehab waters and be damn sure he doesn't have any lingering concerns before the unleash the freak-ness.
As long as he's out there by later in the season, flying around and doing what he does...I'm cool with it. If he misses the whole season, I'd be concerned...I wouldn't be on the "bust"wagon, but I'd certainly not be happy about it, only because of what it could signify for the long-term. -
I don't think anyone could possibly say they have seen enough of him to be on a BUST wagon. Were simply saying there were other more viable options more suited for this team, then drafting Dion Jordan. (Shoulder injury and all - Casting off the 2nd round pick and all - Passing on Lane Johnson and all)
None of us want Jordan to be a bust - We ALL want him to be a HOF. There are some of us that believe he was NOT the appropriate pick, that is all.
Personally, I believe Jarvis Jones is a beast and will far eclipse Jordans career. We'll see.TooGoodForDez likes this. -
Every draft has players that we would of went different directions on, but when they become dolphins, I try to give them all a clean slate to prove themselves, because to think I know how its all gonna work out before they play in a real game, would be a little too presumptuous..cuchulainn likes this. -

Opinions are all we've got to talk about on this site, and every one of us is entitled to their own, no matter who agrees with the opinion or how strongly they disagree. These personal attacks ought to stop, we are a family here, all cheering for the same team, so I say lets grow up and be a team!
My personal opinion is we drafted Dion, whether I liked the pick (didn't) or not, I have no choice now except to live with it and hope like heck Dion is rehabbed correctly first and foremost, then hope he develops into the second coming of Jason Taylor, which I have no idea if he will or not, but sure as heck hope so.
That being said I urge people to make an effort to leave personal agenda's like a hatred for Ireland, color their post. If you don't like a player it damn well shouldn't have squat to do with Ireland drafting them when you post your opinion about the player!
What I don't like that I see here is the manner in which people's opinions are being attacked, and personally. If you disagree strongly with someone's opinion or post, I suggest you strongly present your case against their argument, instead of personally attacking them. I am no Lilly white Mr. Perfect and have made the mistake of letting my emotions overrule my logic when disagreeing with someone or their post. But I have made it my mission to be civil and show some respect to the poster, then tell them why they are out of their mind! :lol:Boik14 and CitizenSnips like this. -

I don't get it. This article completely ignored that he played in the HoF game and looked awesome. If that's him after "barely practicing" and not 100 percent...omg.

Can't wait.
