Make him the highest paid WR in world history.

No to Jake Long. Salary demands too high for production and health.

Man, how the mighty have fallen in some eyes. Jake Long not being a Dolphin would have been hard to handle not too long ago.

On one hand we're saying Long isn't playing elite football and hasn't done so in approximately two years. On the other hand, we're saying that he'll command a salary as if he were playing elite football.

When you have a 4th-round pick who's starting for you, putting up the numbers Hartline is, and is being extended, I'd say that's an overwhelming personnel success.
Check the rate of 4th-round picks who are still on rosters four years into their careers, much less starters, much less putting up league-leading numbers. It ain't good.
But I suppose Jeff Ireland should be chastised for what he's done at the wide receiver position.
Oh and by the way, he found the other starter, who's also doing pretty well in the league, as an undrafted free agent. -

All this hating on Long. You guys act like you've never had a couple of bad days at work. Let's see if he turns things around next game.

In my eyes you need to be able to get open deep on more than the occasional double move, busted coverage or extended plays to be a deep threat.
Re-sign him. So long as it's for #2 money.ToddPhin likes this. -
IMO Even if he plays like the best LT in history I wouldn't pay an offensive lineman 12 million.MikeHoncho and Clark Kent like this. -

Let me put it this way....his double move works because corners don't respect him deep and know they can make up ground due to his lack of speed. With a true deep threat the underneath is opened up because corners won't bite on that first move. They would rather have that receiver catch a 7-8 yard pass than torch them over the top. With Hartline it is the opposite. Corners don't respect his speed so they jump the initial route.ToddPhin likes this. -

You can't have it both ways folks. Either he gets more cushion from corners, or they're squatting on his underneath routes. It ain't both.
Keep trying to "explain" why someone is among the league-leading receivers in downfield game, without attributing any of it to the player himself. You're bound to stumble onto something at some point, eh? -

In that play, he just beats the defender. The slight hesitation move didn't even work on him and he still ran past him.

Beats the defender. No double move. No lack of respect.
That's not even counting the times when he was open and Henne missed him.
Also, it's unfair to discount double moves for Hartline, or any receiver. He has a great deal of success with them. He's a deep threat. The numbers show it and his play shows it. -
Alex its okay to like a guy from Ohio St. He doesn't play there anymore :tongue2:

That's great news...The sooner the better. He's a very good receiver who got mugged consistently his first three years. Man, haha, I mean, if someone were to put together a highlight reel of the "muggings of Brian Hartline" it would surpass "Gandhi" in length...Finally rising to the top with what looks to be a special QB, priceless.

The debate over him being a deep threat shouldn't have any affect on being extended.
He's tremendously valuable to this team, and I've always believed he could be a jack-of-all-trades type of WR whom you could move around the field trying to create mismatches and such, just not as the guy you want being your primary receiver. He should be paid like a #3 or low end #2. -
Another reason is he has good initial quickness (including lateral speed), but that's not the same thing as vertical speed. Zona could've bracketed him at some point during those 253 yards, but they didn't even bother. -
Hartline is most definitely not a one trick pony. The man is a very crafty player with a full toolbox. He's perfect for this offense.

They've been negotiating off and on with Hartline since the early offseason. Not like it's something new. They may however have ramped things up before he can string together anymore games that would definitely raise his price.
He will cost most then the Bess contract........that's for sure. -
