Take it this is Pounceys roster spot.. Gase has a lot of faith in Steen for the run in, I would have liked to see another C signed instead as run game really struggling with Steen. Albeit I guess we do need cover for MM for this week at least.

Pretty damning of Doughty, especially considering how our coach supposedly is with QBs. I like his story and all but he's just not an NFL QB imo.

Didnt he win a playoff game a few years ago? Decent pick up IMO

Fun little factoid,
Marino....was Yates favorite player growing up. That is simply where the comparison stops lol.
He did however, win a playoff game with Houston. He's a capable game manager and nothing more.
Crazy that Doughty isn't being considered. It makes sense though. Yates has experience.dolphin25 likes this. -
I briefly worked for Enterprise after college in their Management Trainee program, I rented Yates a car once, really nice guy!Rocky Raccoon, adamprez2003 and SICK like this. -

I disagree. if this kid hasnt solidified himself as even the 3rd string for us after following the team all year and now losing that spot to someone off the street, it says quite a bit about how they feel about him imo.

signing makes sense.. if we were 5-8 this signing wont happen. But we cant throw Doughty into the fire when we have a shot at a playoff spot.

Is Tj Yates NOW better than BD now? Maybe. He has experience at least. Will he be better than BD in the future? Doubt it, the kid has upside. But you don't want to stall that upside or even ruin it by getting him shaken in situations he shouldn't be in at this time of his career. jmocuchulainn likes this. -

If he indeed is the backup QB to Moore on Saturday, I guess that shows where the organization thinks were at with Brandon Doughty. I'd rather see Doughty as the backup to Moore since he's been here all season and should know the offense, but I guess it doesn't surprise me much he's not ready, he's got a ways to go by most accounts.
Could also be the team like's the fact that Yates at least has experience in a playoff game. So, maybe they would prefer he come in as a backup if something happens to Moore.
Either way though, to me it signals they're not comfortable with Doughty at this point. I would have preferred he was ready to elevate to #2 given the circumstances, but he's not there yet it seems which I guess isn't too surprising, also not too surprising to think the team might just prefer someone with some experience given the fact we're still in the think of all things playoffs. I guess given that, it's probably the right move at this point.Last edited: Dec 14, 2016SICK likes this. -
There's two things you guys are forgetting...
This signing could have nothing or everything to do with Tannehills injury or Brandon Dougherty. We could have signed Yates because of the injury or we could have signed him because Pouncey was moved to IR yesterday and we felt there was nothing better out there.
Secondly, Yates has a playoff game under his belt. If Miami makes the playoffs....If Moore doesn't play well or gets hurt....If Tannehill can't make it back...and if Dougherty isn't ready...who would be left?ripper1961 likes this. -
I think the first point is very likely as well. It's a good idea to have 3 QB's on the roster as well. It's also that time of year where as you pointed out, there just is not a lot of players out there looking for work that could add value for us like an extra QB, with the playoff experience could. -

Completely disagree with the yates signing. Doughty knows the playbook and offense, yates does not. How do they think yates will be more ready than doughty to back up moore against the jets with only a week of practice over Doughty who has practiced the whole season with this offense? If I remember during preseason Gase didn't like the way Doughty went through his progressions, but admited that he always managed to find the open man anyways. Doughty should definately be the backup on saturday.

And there's also this:
"Dolphins offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said there’s no guarantee recently-signed veteran quarterback T.J. Yates will serve as the backup to Matt Moore on Saturday against the New York Jets.
That means rookie Brandon Doughty, the seventh-round pick from Western Kentucky and North Broward Prep, could still win the backup job this week and be elevated from practice squad in what is basically an open competition.
“How we end doing it by the end of the week, we’ll wait and see,” Christensen said.
Christensen said the team isn’t disappointed in Doughty, who has spent the season on the practice squad behind now-injured started Ryan Tannehill and Moore.
“We’re not discouraged with Brandon,” he said. “That would be a misinterpretation.
Christensen said the Dolphins needed to add Yates so they’d have two healthy backups behind Moore.
Christensen said the Dolphins didn’t sign Yates as opposed to promoting Doughty from the practice squad.
“It wasn’t as opposed to,” he said. “It’s both. I think we did want to get an experienced guy in here and there hasn’t been a depth chart come out for the ball game yet. We’ll get them all prepared, we’ll get a look at them, we’ll get to see how they pick it up. We were hoping we could redshirt Brandon but it may or may not have that luxury."
