You should hate our front office instead if Gase turns out not to be the answer.
We'll see how Gase does in 2018 when he has no "backup QB" excuse, though if there's another injury to our QB this year and we have to play another backup QB.. well that's ALL on Gase as far as I'm concerned if he's not prepared.
The one thing that disturbed me though about Gase in 2017 is that our defense has gotten worse. Your Eagles fan mentioned Pederson. He took their defense from 28th in points allowed in 2015 to 12th last year (when he was hired) and then to 4th this year. Clear improvement. Gase? We were 19th before him, stayed at 18th in 2016 and then plummeted to 29th in 2017. There's no "backup QB" excuse for that one. -
I hate Tannenbaum and our entire personnel department. Top heavy roster (we have 120M committed to like 10 players, none of whom actually come close to justifying their salary aside from Suh and maybe Tannehill) because they can’t evaluate talent for **** and in the rare instances when they do, they can’t put the right price tag on it and end up vastly overpaying. And oh yeah, I hate Eagles fans. Scum of the earth....they may be the only group dumber then Jets fans.

The offense struggling certainly affects the defense, as they're out there more often. Now, the defense did themselves no favors, especially on third down, but the it's not really a surprise that the defense fell further in points allowed, and I think some of that is because of the offense's ineptitude.

The graph below shows the average change in points allowed for each extra point scored across NFL history. Keep in mind that this does not show causality. It's just showing how much on average a point scored relates to points allowed.
The average since 1978 is -0.252. We can use this to estimate how good the defense would have been if ALL the correlation between offense and defense is due to the offense (i.e. we can estimate the maximum possible effect).
The Dolphins in 2016 scored 363 points and in 2017 they scored 281 points for a difference of 82 points. Multiply -0.252*82 = -20.66. Add -20.66 to the 393 points we gave up in 2017 and you get 372.34 points, which would have our defense ranked 21st instead of 29th. We were 34 points from being ranked 18th as in 2016, suggesting that 20.66/34 = 60.8% of the drop in defensive ranking is the maximum you could attribute to the drop in offensive performance.
I'd just cut that 60.8% in half as a decent estimate of how much of the drop was due to offense because correlations are not directional and there's no a priori reason to think that on average offense affects defense more than vice versa. So maybe a decent estimate is that 30% of the drop in defensive performance was due to the offense. -
You can show any graph you want to but that doesn’t justify the fact that the Dolphins had no pass rush or a single LB on their roster who could cover a TE or make impact plays for the defense.
The defense was loaded with mediocre to below average players and that is the reason the stats for the defense were bad.
Gase screwed up by convincing the FO to spent ten million on Cutler and he deserves the entire blame for how ineffective the offense was in 2017.
Personally I think Tannebaum is terrible in his position and it won’t surprise mr if Tannebaum, Grier and Gase are all gone from the Dolphins within the next two years.dolphin25 likes this. -
So it's clear.. that 30% estimate refers only to what percent of the difference in defensive performance between last year and this year is due to the offense. The baseline of whatever it took to be ranked #18 last year would be estimated to be ALL on the defense, at least until someone can show specifically how different teams' offenses affect their defenses (until then we have no choice but to assume the same unknown average effect + random variation for all teams).
So yeah.. the lions share of any defensive ranking is due to the defense. Like I said in post #2 there's no "backup QB" excuse for (most of) the near-basement defensive ranking we had in 2017. -
