You guys. All of you.
Yes, you.
You feel this feeling you're feeling because of Final Fantasy VII?
Now don't ever tell me you hate JRPGs and will never play them.Vengeful Odin and Dolphin1184 like this. -
Which I also have to finish... oh wait my Xbox 360 doesn't detect a controller anymore. -

I broke this out as a separate thread as I figured it would probably get quite a bit of discussion.
I started another play through on this a couple months ago - guess I may as well hold off now. I'll be interested to see how well this is received. This is a game that has a lot of nostalgia value (probably the most of any catalog title), but there are parts that can be frustrating. I quit on my last play through because of how wonky it was at the Gold Saucer, for instance.
I'm still excited to see this. Just hope that we get it next year and not in 2017.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
I haven't played the game since 1998, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm assuming that they'll stick to the original outline pretty well, but with more depth, and of course now dialogue. If the simple HD remasters of X/X2 could feel like new to me, this one should be that to the X degree. And how will the combat be constructed? Old School turn based, or something more contemporary? I'm giddy thinking about it. Party based RPG with today's technology! I've read some people (pure speculation) thinking that if this is a hit (it will be), that it could usher in a number of new remakes (not remasters) of classic games. That would be beyond awesome.
Of course, I'll probably have to get used to her being called Aerith instead of Aeris, as I knew her way back when. -
I was going to create a new thread after Square-Enix's E3 conference at 1 PM Eastern today. I'm assuming we will hear more about FF7 there, as well as FFXV, KH3, and a few others. Didn't see the need to make a new thread until there was more, dedicated info to be had.

This has to be one of the more overrated franchises in all of gaming, no?
Still, Final Fantasy 7 has a pretty badass soundtrack. -
-
Because you're wrong on both. -
I'm more for the open-world experience in gaming. -
Also, Final Fantasy XV is an open world RPG, or at least open world to an extent. -
Then, when I moved up to the SNES in high school, FF2 and FF3 (US numbering) came out, and were the most impressive things ever at that point. I was hooked, and a FF gamer for life. I bought a PS1 to play FF7 when it came out in 97 when I was in college, and have been a Sony guy ever since. The game's series has had a profound effect on my gaming life, honestly. The games that I enjoy, and how I play them, have been molded greatly by Final Fantasy. No exaggeration. How I play games, especially RPGs, and what I expect out of them, is founded in the series.Vengeful Odin and MikeHoncho like this. -
Basically High School consisted of football, Final Fantasy 7, and Goldeneye. I too have been a Sony guy ever since, and swore if they ever remade FF7, I'd buy the system just for the game. Already have my PS4 and I couldn't be more excited.
Hope they keep much of the game intact, but offer expansion into the back story (didn't have a PSP so I never played the prequel), and more side quests that flesh out some of the lore better. The Material system was still the top battle system in FF7 IMO. I've played every FF since, and the only one I've enjoyed about as much was Final Fantasy Tactics.

For me the series peaked with VI and VII, although I apprecated VIII-X and really liked XIII. -
My favorite FF game is 12, which I know is not a common opinion. Also absolutely love 3 (6), and think that a ground up remake of that one for the current systems would be the most epic thing ever. Only one I hate and didn't finish was 9. Just awful and out of place. Highly disapointed with the 13 series, which I felt got worse and worse as they went on to a very depressing end. -
-
LOL, I look at it like this. One of these things is not like the other things. Its like they outsourced 9 to someone else who had a rough idea about how to make JRPG games, but no idea about the progression of the franchise and where things had been headed, but then got back on track with the next ones.
FF1
FF2 (us)
FF3 (us)
FF7
FF8
WTF?!?!?!?
FFX/X2
FF12 -
I thought majority hated 8 much more than 9.
And all you guys talking about loving RPGs growing up, but no mention of Chrono Trigger or Mario RPG on SNES. For shame! :pity: -
-
However JRPGs, I will always have a soft spot for Xenogears. -
Enjoyed Chrono Trigger a lot. Played it at least three times.
I've heard that line about 9 a lot, but what is it celebrating, other than FF1 with the black mage? The Japanese ones that weren't originally released in the US? It has little in common with the US 2 & 3. Just came off as silly and childish to me. Of course, I was a lonely and depressed teen and early 20-something, so maybe the others were just up my alley. -
edit : oops. meant to edit my post, not react to it, lol. -
I disagree that it had little in common with IV and VI.
If you were lonely and depressed 20-something, I could see how you would love VIII. Squall would have been right up your ally. -
Plus it has one of my favorite sountrack songs in Ipsen's Castle

I'm curious as to what it will be. An updated system similar to what they had in FF12, or Bioware has had in some of the DA games, would be cool, where you can add a list of commands for your companions to go through, based on the situation.
-
What I'm more concerned about is a rebalancing of the Materia system. Materia is very limited until you hit the second continent, when suddenly you're bombarded with gimmick Materia with no clear value, and you lack the Materia slots necessary to grow everything. The result is that a lot of the stuff from the second continent goes to waste. It's also pretty difficult level up magic materia later in the game, even with the double and triple AP weapons.
It also sounds like part of the story will be rewritten, possibly to include new locations from Crisis Core and stuff hinted at in Dirge of Cerberus. They also need to reconcile the 30 different versions of the Nibelheim incident. -

I read that too. Its why I mentioned a ground up remake of 3 a little bit ago. That would be so awesome, to use the game's outline and characters, but make it into one of today's best RPGs in graphics, sound and scale.
