Deus ex dolphinforum_veteranOkay, I repeat my concerns about Flores not being able to settle on an OC and system. The offense will be set back by a month or so in 2021, as they learn to play in a new system. That means we lose a game the first month of the season that we could have won if everyone was comfortable and on the same page offensively.
Tua's development will be stunted a bit as he learns yet another offense. He should still take a leap, if he is going to be the player expected when he was drafted at #5, but he won't really know the offense inside and out until year two in it.
I don't mind Flores making a change after year one, but to change again in year two is a problem. Gailey was going to be short-term, but I expected 2-3 years when he unretired, not a one-and-done. So, chalk this up as a mistake by Flores and the first red flag for me regarding this coach.

You don't get to select TWO bad assets in a row and not get some criticism. Year one I understand, you are scrambling to put a staff together. Year two? A more calculated decision that Flores got wrong -if he wanted offensive continuity and the smoothest development for Tua.

No way. You get rid of bad assets and try again. This isn't a red flag for Flores it's a sign of a no-nonsense coach. VERY good sign. One could argue Tua's development would be stunted far more if we kept Gailey.

So, if Flores fires the OC of 2021 and hires a FOURTH guy in 2022, he's doing a GREAT JOB? Is that the argument? Wouldn't it be better if Flores got the OC pick right and we had a guy around for at least 3-4 years instead?
Flores hired Gailey. Seems it was a bad decision, and minor props to Flores for understanding that, but major blame for making the wrong choice in the first place.
Maybe Gailey feels that Tua is NOT a franchise QB and Flores doesn't want to hear it? We'll find out in the next year or two what the story is on Tua.

Flores hiring Gailey was a bad decision. Not arguing that. But Flores firing Gailey was a good decision. You suggested in the post I responded to (first sentence, last paragraph) that he keep Gailey on despite his hiring being a mistake. THAT is what I'm arguing against. Continuity is not so important that you keep bad assets (exactly my response to your first post).

Fair enough, I think we both misunderstood exactly what the other was getting at. I agree you can't keep Gailey just for the sake of continuity, but worry that Flores is struggling to find an OC and stick with them.

If we have another 10+ win season? Yes, that means he did a good job. It's a completely different story when you're 7-9 and ALMOST good enough to be considered a contender.
I get that we want to nail the right coaches off the bat, but you also have to realize that it's a process and you often have to take whatever's available at the moment. Taking a coaching job is like playing chess- the wrong move can destroy your career and prevent you from ever being HC material. I can see why folks wouldn't want to jump on-board with a 5-win team in full rebuild....a 10-win squad with an elite defense and loaded up with draft picks is a completely different story though.
In other words, people who wouldn't even consider Miami a year ago may have us as their #1 choice today.

continuity was the reason Adam Gase was still the HC fir the Jets this year. How did that work out for the Jets and Sam Darnold?

HooligansubscriberEvidently Flores didn't fire Gailey. Flores was caught by surprise when Gailey retired, as reported by Armando Salguro of the Miami Herald. Gailey had been hinting for months that he was uncomfortable with the strict Covid protocols.
