Points per game is ultimately the most important stat other than wins. We're ranked 27th in both offense and defense. So both are a problem.. defense isn't the "real" problem.

The D has given the O several chances in several games. They actually held guys several times, but the O usually fails to capitalize on those opportunities and then the D gets worn out. A lot of those stats come when the game is already pretty much gone. Yes, the run D has been bad at times, but the blame can't all be put on them. The O fails to sustain drives and put up enough points, not to mention the pick 6s.

I agree the defense is a major issue and needs to be upgraded in this coming off season. Yet part of the problem is also the anemic play of the offense.

Even when the defense plays well early in games, the offense seems to constantly be going 3 and out and the defense is forced to go right back into the game. The offense rarely has any sustained drives in the game which takes a lot of time off the clock.

While the defense certainly is substandard at this time and major upgrades are needed at LB and in the secondary, except for Jones, a more consistent offense would certainly allow this defense to spend far less time on the field.

 

we have dominant player in two out of the three levels of our defense..we need a mike linebacker..really really bad.

 

(1) Hire Vic Fangio as HC.

(2) Draft defense in 2016.

(3) Draft defense in 2017.

 

You know what would go along way to helping the offense stay on the field more and corresponding my keep the defense fresher? Run the Damon ball!

I can't blame the D for this nonsense. Generally speaking they keep the team in games through the first couple quarters. Unfortunately they lack any depth whatsoever and eventually get gassed when the offense can't sustain drives and put points on the board.

Spending some draft picks on the defense would be a good start. Miami has spent 2/3 of draft picks in the round 1-4 on offense the last 5 years, including 4 of the 5, 1st round picks.

That our offense is so anemic with all the resources put into it in the past 5 years is absolutely PATHETIC! 27th in scoring (20.5, but actually offense only scores 18.54 when subtracting defense and ST TDs) , 27th in total offense. But what really KILLS the defense is the offense only converts 27.7% of 3rd downs and 26.7% of 4th downs. Tannehill ought to buy all the defensive players oxygen tanks for X-mas.

 

count me in on pointing the blame on the offense the most. TOP is just atrocious and frankly if i was on the D watching the offense on the field. Well... lets just say I would feel inspired when I retook the field. They drain the life out of me every damn week

I totally agree that they are both to blame, offense and defense. The offense probably a little more. I'm more shocked how poorly this defense has played than the offense. I was sure the D was going to be the strength of this team... Huge disappointment .

Works the other way too.. We become one dimensional when we are down by 2 scores early .. Both are disappointments

I think the point is, there is no one real problem here. Team sucks up and down the roster. Great thing is, one offseason can fix it. If they make the right decisions.

 

But again, that ties back into sustaining drives early and putting points on the board.

When you look at the season as a whole, more often than not it's the offense failing to do anything early or give the defense a lead to play with. They're not a deep unit and as the season progressed, lost significant contribution.

It's not even just a stamina thing either, it's also morale.

 

I get it Rock.. I see exactly what you are saying. But there are also numerous games with us giving up points early, or giving up big drives when we have gotten back into games. Obviously more blame goes on the offense this year ... Not by much . Thus this "team" is not very good

If forced to choose, I would agree with the OP.

We got TONS of holes in the roster. The crappy o-line gets all the attention, but our defense is garbage outside of 4 or 5 guys. GARBAGE.

 

The other thing...if an opposing defense forces us to go three and out often, why can't our defense do it to the other team? It's because they aren't that good. Of course, in the fourth, if you've been on the field all game, you are probably tired. But in the first half? No excuses. How many times have we watched teams just march the field for a td with their first possession of the game on us?

 

I still see the usual "adjustments" made to soften the offense's role in this.

Frankly, here are how the #'s break down for the 11 games we've played:

Dolphins 1st Quarter Scoring = 37 (3.36pt average)
Dolphins 2nd Quarter Scoring = 75 (6.81 average)
**58 Points happened in two game (Titans/Texans)**
**Zero points in the first quarter of 6 games**

Opponents 1st Quarter Scoring = 79 (7.18 average)
Opponents 2nd Quarter Scoring = 83 (7.54 average)

Fact is on average they're not getting behind by two scores in the 1st quarter. That speaks volume of how anemic this offense has really been outside of really 1-2 outlier games which were lightning in a bottle quite frankly. They accounted for 58 of our 112 first half scoring (51%).

If we want to continue "adjusting things" why don't we pull the Titans/Texans 1st/2nd quarter scoring averages down to what the other 9 games have been like. They would have scored a whoping 12pts in the first quarter and 55pts in the 2nd quarter (grand total of 77pts which is basically half of their opponents in those same quarters).

 

WADR, I think this mentality is what has gotten this team into trouble time and time again, and there are more holes on this team now then there have been, I don't think we should look at it in this way, I think we should look at rebuilding, without looking at next year as a timetable.

If by some miracle it happens fine, but what your asking for is for everything they do to work out, and that's never the case, imo we should start building the team for longevity, stop being active in FA, that is just failure waiting to happen, be selective in FA, and go after 2nd tier FAs that may fit your team better than they fit the other team, at a much lower cost, build a cohesive Oline, that can keep you competitive even if your lacking at the QB/RB positions, so that when you get that guy you can become a dangerous team.

CBs are another commodity that should be prioritized, I would love for this team to get back to smart football decisions, and not the rash "rebuild and contend next year" philosophy that has this team in the state it's currently in, because their is no core here, and subsequently no identity.

This team needs to put it's nose to the grindstone and start doing the work, and stop looking for the quick fix imho.

 

Rock, that does nothing but further prove how stupid Lazor was, and how terrible the gameplan was. If we truly haven't beenoticed down multiple scores early, then there was no need to abandon the run game.

And thats exactly the argument that's been made.

 

It also proves that this offense is not capable of being pass first and never will be, as we have a leaky O-line and a caretaker QB.

While increasing rushing attempts might increase their efficiency and is something I've been clamoring for months, we don't know for sure what the outcome would be. It's part of the threat of the "adjustment" fallacy. Just like last year when people were clamoring for receivers who all had larger catch radius who could fight for balls. What has that really done for the passing offense thus far? We don't really have a QB who's willing to let his WR's go up and make a play.

I think you see what I'm getting at. Regardless, it's more a 3-pronged issue. O-line needs to raise its play. The run game needs more attempts. The QB's balls need to finally drop.

 

I'm sure if we look back at stats and compare play by play, we can find a lot more examples of this. Our offense has never been consistently good in the Tannehill era.

All three facets are struggling and never seem to complement each other. Too many times the D would get a stop the O would go three and out, when the O finally gets points the D would give up a long drive and TD, not to mention the specials calamities at the worse times.

 

Good last year until our offense got found out and Lazor was too clueless or stubborn to change things.

 

Okay, so we were beneficial because of a system and we saw an inflated version of each player for a short period of time.

I'm an advocate for running a conventional pro style offense to see what we've really got. Campbell will try to do that for the remainder of the season but we'll see what happens.

Yeah similar to the wildcat, gotta keep evolving but offensive balance and keeping the defense off guard are key. We have to attack mismatches, none off this take what the D gives you bull.
