This is an interesting article that really makes you look at how the Dolphins have progressed, or have they, over the recent past? Its kind of a downer after the excitement of free agency but it is a reality that is hard to overlook. It really puts the importance of this years free agency and college draft in perspective. I would much rather have faith in all of the moves that are being made and will be made this year, but it is hard to keep the faith with all of the mistakes and wrong decisions that were made up to this point. I guess he is just saying what a few of us have been saying and a lot of us refused to say or tried so hard to overlook.

I think lebatard is a very talented radio talk show host, and I enjoy his show very much, but he has no clue about the inner workings of a front office, the whole article is a waste because he includes mistakes made by people who are no longer a part of the franchise but had everything to do with it's demise..
Every end has a new beginning.
Ireland didnt hire sparano and Parcells picked a lot of the groceries, neither is here anymore..ignorant journalism in this case as it pertains to football and the variables that lead to destruction.MAFishFan, Ronnie Bass, Fin D and 22 others like this. -
Whether Joe Philbin and staff are a solution to over a decades worth of problems is unknown and TBD.
But it's becoming quite clear (to me at least) that Tony Sparano, Bill Parcells, and his outdated approach to the game were a big problem, and admittedly I don't think there is a GM in the game that could have overcome the two of them no matter the approach or "success" in the draft.
From the standpoint of the GM(Ireland) selecting players to fit a particular coaching staff's scheme, which is what we appear to be attempting to do, much of it hinges on the coaching staff and Ryan Tannehill. I don't believe Lebartard took this into account.azfinfanmang, Tone_E, Ducken and 3 others like this. -
I agree with DJ about Lebatard, love his radio show but he really doesn't know much about football, let alone the dolphins. This article doesn't have anything to really do with future of this team.

Lebatard struggles when it comes to football. It's the reason he hardly ever talks about football and spends 4 hours talking about the Heat and the NBA everyday.

I see what you mean Dj but it does kind of reenforce the importance of having successful free agency and draft to help restore faith and hope to the Dolphin faithful. The moves made this year in both free agency and the draft need to be a slam dunk in order to make this team a winner. I don't agree to the article in its entirety but I still believe it is stating what a lot of people have been thinking and saying. In no way should Ireland take all or even most of the blame for the struggles this team has gone through. However, it is his job to restore confidence in this team through his decisions and moves.

I thought Le Batard lost points by referring to taking Ginn when the top 15 had Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson. Those two were long gone by the time the Dolphins were on the clock.

Whom in the current organization were with the team when they drafted Ted Ginn??? It is bizarre that Lebatard believes that decision should be used as some type of predictor for current decisions. He is essentially suggesting some type of supernatural powers are at work here.sports24/7, ToddPhin and djphinfan like this. -
I see what lebatard is trying to do with the whole we want to believe crap, it's just weak man, if you want to do something that has meaning, and zero in on the real problem of why weve been tortured, have the balls to really go after Parcells and how much if a scam he was, how pussified his executive goals were, and how everyone continues to treat his *** like he's an untouchable..
No one knows what Ireland had to deal with, no one knows how much authority he had to give up, but I can tell you this, knowing what we now know about that POS Parcells, it wasn't a fair first chance at the GM position.Serpico Jones likes this. -
As a long-time Dolphin fan I can somewhat relate to the theme of this article. Perhaps b/c I was spoiled for so long. I started following the Dolphins in 1972 and between 1972-2003 the Dolphins only had "TWO" seasons with losing records. Since 2004 the Dolphins have had "SEVEN" seasons with losing records.
Perhaps pessimism as a defense against disappointment.Aquafin likes this. -
And his connectedness and knowledge of how a front office operates has little to do with his point about trust and caution.Trowa likes this. -

What is there to be "trusting" in? What does that even mean? lol
As a fan, all you are doing is sitting back and being entertained... or sometimes the product is poor an isn't very entertaining. But what are you putting "trust" into?shula_guy and Stringer Bell like this. -
This tells me he's not thinking from a football acquisition perspective, tells me he's not thinking about how our new coach and coordinator are influencing and working with the front office as it should..
He's feeding on the masses..I love listening to him, makes me laugh, but to tell me how to think about the team and how it's got to this point seems out of his wheelhouse.. -
Its easier for long time fans of the Dolphins to maintain faith and optimism than it is for fans who may have become fans toward the end of Marino's career. I have been a fan since 1966 and I have experienced the good times and the peaks. The undefeated year, the Superbowl wins, Don Shula and the league wide respect the Dolphins had at that time. I can more easily accept the fact that Marino never won a Super Bowl in Miami, but that he was the most gifted and feared quarterback the Dolphins have ever had. Whats happened since the Marino years has been a real rough road for Miami fans. It seems like its been nothing but big hopes and bigger disappointments since then. I do have confidence the Dolphins will once again rise to the top and I have high hopes that this year is the beginning.

Why should I proceed with caution when it comes to Philbin?, because we spent money on players because we had a lot to work with, what's the point of the article Des, what's the relevancy of it? -

I thought as a fan I have a legitimate right to think I am the one that possesses true insight as to how best run the team and if those bumbling idiots getting the paychecks would just plug in and do it my way we would all be happy and entertained as the team goes undefeated and wins Super Bowl after Super Bowl! After all if they did things my way we would have Rodgers, Brady and Kaepernick on our roster...:wink2:
Since they obviously haven't done things my way shouldn't I be able to "trust" they can at least put an entertaining product on the field with an occasional Super Bowl run doing things their way? -
I was reading the Miami Herald Sports before Dan LeBatard was born - Edwin Pope as a young man. I read Dan LeBatard when he started writing for the Herald in 1990, before I moved from South Florida. Dan LeBatard is not Edwin Pope. If this article came from Edwin Pope, I would be worried. Since it came from LeBatard, I am somewhat amused, but worried about how far the quality of Miami sports commentary has sunk.

I've been conflicted with how to feel on this one. On one hand, I think Dolphin fans have to take all the enjoyment they can when it presents itself. No reason for people to not find a little happiness in these free agent signings. Especially when the regular season typically provides us with so much misery. But for everyone to act like this is complete redemption for this front office, owner and coaches; it's way too early to start that parade, IMHO.

By the way, Le Batard is not questioning the moves. He's commenting on the relationship between the franchise and its fans in light of what happened at 4 PM on Tuesday.shula_guy and Clark Kent like this. -

Dan Le Batard: "It’s hard to feel good and trust Miami Dolphins when so many mistakes have been made"
Its an old topic, He's talking to the masses, the ones who don't follow the team as closely as we do, he's late, we have moved in and assessed the moves, dissected the old crap, compartmentalized the mistakes, and see something in Philbin that makes us feel a bit different..
In this case the usual entertaining host is boring, which only reaffirms my point about its relevancy, he doesn't care to spend time understanding the direction of the team, just regurgitating the masses opinion.. -
Eh, he's right in a way, the trust tree is not exactly fruitful in the last decade.
Everyone loved the Marshall trade, and then..Marshall was gone, replaced with a unknown.
A telling thing is how jerseys can fans buy, and know that player will still be on the team two years from now?
Even our "stars" are transitory, and that erodes trust in the organization.MonstBlitz likes this. -

You should temper your expectations with cautious optimism. It is their job to build our confidence in them through results. They have not earned it yet.
I agree with the point of the article from an organazational standpoint. They have not ear ed the right to be given the benefit of doubt. As an organization overall they have given pessimists reason to view their most recent change of direction with skepticism.
That is what I took away from the article.Ozzy likes this. -
Well I think what Labatard is trying to say here is that its easy to be pestimistic when a lot of personel moves have not resulted in a lot of success . who in hell want to brag about wr s Bess and Hartline when they dont scare anyone with their talent . At least Ricky and Ronnie were putting some fear into defenses but no way in hell has our wr corp scared anyone and that goes back to the Oronde Gadsden , O.J McDuffie and Lamar Thomas Days and Bess and Hartline are nowhere as good of wrs as those three guys .
Jeff Ireland has been given too much of a free pass from last seasons perspective .
here is part of the problem Miami had two pro bowl wrs in Chambers and Welker with the benefits of McMichael , Donald Lee , Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown . yes its true we had those guys and couldnt make the playoffs or past the first rd. but that was because our defense shriveld up like a prune.
I find it very hard to trust Jeff Ireland when he didnt bring us a superstar player and it showed up last year when we couldnt score against bad teams and Bees and Hartline and Daniel Thomas didnt get into the endzone and that is all we need to look at in terms of getting great results. -
I get the argument that BP was calling the shots in the Ireland early years, but when a franchise has 4 losing seasons in a row under a GM after that same franchise had only 5 losing seasons the previous 39 why shouldn't the GM be held to a level of accountability?
Maybe the blame has been earned? One thing is for sure, he hasn't as of yet earned praise for turning the franchise around back their winning ways prior to 2004. -
This is one of the reasons why I despised the "blue collar smart football player" crapola that was the ober dictum.
This is also one of the reasons why I'm a fan of the Wallace signing, he'll be here awhile, and can attract a new gen of fans.
