Sigh... some people access the site by means that blocks certain websites from views, or simply puts them in a position where they can't click the link.

It's just common courtesy too. If you're going to start a thread, include some context, not just the link. Jeez..

let's get back to the core issues. Jarvis has a 5th year right? And then Miami can franchise him? So Miami essentially has until 2019 if they wanted to. But based on recent history, they will sign him. So my concerns are when? Will he play distracted this year? And for how much? I think the Jarvis Camp wants top paid money, but I have confidence they will reach an agreement for less.

I dont think so, rules are different for a 2nd round pick from a 1st. This is it as far as his contract goes. They could franchise him at the end of the year but I dont think the dolphins nor Jarvis wants it to get to that. They have 17 Mill in cap space still so something could be worked out but there are some big cap hits coming next year. They need to get this done before the season. He has certainly earned it on and off the field.

Wht do you fight this stuff? It's not hard to copy and paste a snippet into the original post. Plus, the snippet that Brandon posted puts a different light on the thread than I got from the title. I appreciate you posting stuff like this, but it gets annoying when people keep suggesting that you do things a little differently, and you refuse, and just get snarky about it.

Yes they do. He was a 2nd Round pick and as you showed is only on a 4 year deal.
It's in everyone's best interest to get this done before the season starts. You really don't want him to get to free agency or put a tag on him.
Cheaper now than it will be at the end of the season.

He knows with every catch he just fortifies his position of getting paid. It won't distract him. Out there in the moment adrenalin flowing knowing his buddies need his best, he's too good to get distracted.

I would say, he'll get a contract before TC. Case is working too hard to keep drama away and create a family like vibe. He isn't going to want that to even kinda maybe impact the team.

I hate to point fingers, but all Landry has done is be the pulse of this offense. Miami has a dependency on him, because the last two years they couldn't depend on Parker. Jarvis may not be an "ODBJ, Julio or Brown," but his value to this team is very similar. Now we have only 2 months to sign him, or plan on using a tag on him. Ricky, you are right, I am sure it will get done, will be expensive, but will get done.

Pro's Con's of delaying for Dolphins

    Pro's
    - They'll get a clearer sense of what they have in Devante Parker, Caroo, Drew Morgan etc as camp and pre-season continues which could affect how much we feel we 'need' Jarvis
    - If he gets injured they aren't on the hook yet.

    Con's
    - If Jarvis has a crazy good start to the year his cost increases. I do not see this as very likely. It sounds like the ball will be shared between more targets now, with Julius Thomas arriving and Devante stepping up. Plus Ajayi and the running game. If anything, Jarvis will see his production be less than or equal to before, I'd think. Seems like no real risk there.

Not much incentive to rush the deal, imo, other than the psychological factor: how does it look to other players in the locker room? Will they think the Dolphins are not "taking care of" one of our own?

Wait... you're going to get all snarky now because you start a thread with the title "Landry's agent sets extension deadline" without any such mention of the deadline, just an external link, with no content or context whatsoever outside of the link and you're upset that I provided the context that you didn't include just to help others out? It's been essentially a "requirement" around here since inception. Hell, at one point back in the day mod's would edit the original posts to include links, or quotes from the article if they weren't there. It's pretty simple though, if you're going to post a link, you should at least include some context from the article or commentary of your own to help generate the discussion. It's not twitter here... It's a message board to provide some commentary/opinion/discussion points around the news you want to link us to. Sorry that you consider that "spoonfeeding". Most just consider it common knowledge and courtesy on a forum man.

Look man, I appreciate you going out of your way to start all these threads, it's brought a sense of life back to the forums, and that's great to see. However, a thread with a simple link really doesn't any good for many. Sure, the majority may not have an issue with opening the thread to click on the link however, for me here at work, (where I typically access the site from during the day) many media outlets are blocked. Twitter... blocked. Youtube... blocked. Some ESPN content... blocked. Sometimes NFL.com content... blocked.

I was simply trying to help others out by posting the content so people had a clue what was going on... No need to get bent out of shape about it.

Agreed for the most part. The guy is definitely the heart and soul of this team by what we can see as outsiders. The problem is, how do you put a monetary value on that? Should we pay him just because of that? Obviously in this case, no, because he's going to be demanding high dollars. Of course he has performance numbers and plenty of tape to show why he deserves a big fat pay check. However, I think if we don't get too homer blind here with Landry, I think we can identify his deficiencies, and those things that should limit him from being a top paid WR in the league. If he was more of a downfield threat, different story.

I think it's going to be, and likely has been a much trickier contract negotiation than many have expected. He thinks he's a top WR. Many seem to consider him as a slot guy though. He's by all accounts a good locker room guy, and he's clearly a sparkplug, so that factors in here too.

Ultimately, I think I'd be surprised if the deal doesn't get done. You knew they were going to put a deadline on it sooner rather than later. I'd like to think that Miami has made a decision by now as to whether they want to keep him around as part of the future plans. If so, they better get that deal done. Don't sit around and wait until after the season so he can hit free agency and all the tampering that is sure to come with it once his "deadline" passes. I'd like to think also that this team has learned from the Lamar Miller and Vernon deals that letting Landry hit FA is likely a good sign he's going to move on. Money always seems to talk at that point. The one thing that really clouds this is Kenny Stills. They tied up a good chunk in him. If I'm not mistaken though when I saw that contract it looks like the team potentially has a decently affordable way out in a year or two. Which I believe coincides with Parker coming due, which is also the year after Landry. So there may be a way to keep all 3 for a short window. I'm admittedly not the best with the contract reading though.

Finally, good on Landry for opting not to hold out, and fully participate. To me though, it should be pretty simple. The player has proven himself. While the team and the player may agree on where his true value lies, you should have seen enough by now to know whether you want him here or not. If you want him, get it done assuming he's willing to be reasonable. I know this though, I'm going to be pretty disappointed if he walks come free agency and all we get in return is a compensatory pick down the road.

That's the problem though- he is a top receiver just like Hartline and Bess once were. And the intangibles he brings....amazing work ethic, never quit attitude, etc....that's a big part of people around him playing at high levels. For that reason alone he should be the top paid slot receiver in the league.

But then there's the reality- he's quick but slow. He's aggressive in all the right ways, but also gets dumb penalties. He's the ultimate player for any team, yet he doesn't have WR1 talent. Tons of positives but a good bit of negatives too. So how do you pay a guy like that? Because at the end of the day, the last thing you want to do is get him worried about long-term money and crush some of that positive energy that makes him so valuable.

I think you almost have to pay him top WR2 numbers because of his non-football value....he's just too instrumental in everything that we do. If we had to trade one person....Landry, Stills or Parker....the coaches would be screaming to keep Landry despite him being the least talented of the three. That's just what he brings on a day by day basis....you can't let someone like that walk.

Landry has proven though when he is one on one in the middle of the field on crossing routes, he is a big time player, against Jets and AZ he did this. When asked to make big plays, he produces. So where does the subjectivity of TD's or yards per catch offset converting 3rd downs, bailing out a sack, a big punt or KO return or springing Ajayi for big runs. On those long runs last year by Ajayi, see who the last Dolphin was blocking. I think there are two issues here. 1. is signing him and 2. Making him the highest paid WR. We all know (I think) that Miami is building something here and we have been able to keep players at a somewhat discount. Would it matter what the contract averages? isn't it about Guaranteed money anyway? The kid is 24. More than likely at 28, he will be getting another deal. I will throw a number out there, and say $40M guaranteed. Love it or hate it?

I can understand the team wanting to pause on the contract since we're still technically in "wait and see" mode. Our offense only dominated one team last season, the lowly Jets, so I imagine it's pretty tough thinking that you have a top-5 offense but not actually seeing it yet. We know that the talent is there but can they put it all together? I think that's what 2017 (especially the early half) is all about.

Because if they're not where you want them to be and more pieces are required, then you're in trouble with RT, Landry, and Stills all getting top dollar contracts (along with Jones and others on the D).

Exactly. Like I said, to me, that's the tough part. How do you put a value on him? It's a tough one. I'm still not convinced we subscribe to the whole WR1, 2, 3 deal. Sure, we have a depth chart etc. Sure there's progressions etc. However, I think you can look at Dallas and say yeah, that offense runs through Dez Bryant. He's that good, he dictates what the defense does essentially, and they scheme everyone open off him. Then you look at us, and I think our coaches tend to look at it as here's the pieces we have in Parker, Landry and Stills. We know what they do. How to they compare against this weeks opponents defense? Lets play set our offense off of those mismatches we can create. Whether that's Landry Week 1. Or Parker week 2. So, that to me, creates another problem unless I'm seeing this wrong, or possibly overthinking it.

Ultimately though, with the way the cap works, and it's increases etc, etc. It's hard to slot anybody anywhere unless you apply that whole capflation thought process. So, sure, his new deal could put him at one of the highest paid WR's right now, and everyone will freak out, but truth be told he probably wouldn't be if you looked at it properly, and as soon as another WR's deal comes due who's a star, it'll quickly leapfrog him. So it's hard to get caught up in that. It's just about finding a deal that realistically works for the team, and the player. Easier said than done.

I don't disagree here at all. His contributions are hard to match and I wish our other WR's played with a mentality similar to him. As I said above though, I'm not too concerned about "highest paid WR" status, because of the way the cap works. Optics might make it look that way once the deal is signed, but if you factor everything else in, that's likely not the case. If it's me doing the deal, I'd want to keep him. I know that much. Do we value him like an AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Julio Jones etc, etc? No. I can't. He's just not as dynamic as they are on a regular basis. That's nothing against Landry, just, different skill sets and player types. However, you can make the case as you and Key did above that he's dynamic TO US the way those guys are to their teams, and I guess then, there's nothing wrong with that. He's a good fit for us, so you should get it done. It's not my money, so I don't care what they give him. I'd just want to make sure that one, they don't grossly overpay, because he does have limitations compared to those guys at the top of the WR food chain. Again, if it temporarily makes him the highest paid WR because guys "better" than him are on older deals, or deals that haven't yet come due, so be it... If you aren't going to factor in the cap over the years into that discussion, to me it's kind of silly to look at. It's just an interesting contract situation to me. If Landry's demand though, is I want to be the highest paid WR, no if's and's or buts about it. Then he's just being ridiculous. Again, it depends though how you look at the context of who the "highest paid WR" is.

Sigh... Why is posting etiquette not important? How is asking someone to provide content/context with a link so people know what the purpose of the thread is aside from a jumbled up HTML link... taking away fun? I mean come on, there'd be no complaining about it if it was done. Especially after being pointed out numerous times. Were far away from being similar to FH here IMO. Simply asking someone to provide a touch of context, or content along side a link certainly isn't the beginning of sliding down a slippery slope towards FH status... It's simply asking for some quality and context. Quality is one of those reasons this place was created, it's not much to ask for really.

I don't want any part of this argument, but I do want to add that ANY MEMBER has the right to share their opinion....whether they joined last week or twenty years ago. While that other guy did seem to have a little attitude, you'd hope that long-time members would take the high road and correct them in a positive way instead of starting a troll-fest. Saying that your viewpoint is more important because you've been here longer simply isn't true though- that's why a lot of folks have a problem with you here.

For instance, we both love Tannehill, yet we disagree on how he played several years ago. So what? Do we really have to argue about that daily? Is it in the spirit of the forum to keep arguing the same things over and over again? Of course not. That's all the other guy was trying to say and there's no reason to attack him for it. He wasn't trying to be insulting- I took from his message, "Relax and enjoy the forum...people don't need to be so serious all the time."

Plain and simple, if you want a large community with lots of diversity, viewpoints, etc. then you have to treat that community like they belong here. If that's not what you want, then you should build your own forum with some like-minded friends. But hating on folks just because they see something differently is not why anyone is here....THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF A COMMUNITY FAN FORUM.

You cussed the guy out for saying this board should be about fun, not meeting technicalities. He certainly didn't insult everyone on the board. Besides, I wasn't sticking up for him...I was asking you if "senior posters" had a responsibility to keep the forums civil. IE- not cussing newer members out for sharing their opinion.

My logic is that i enjoy talking about football and the Dolphins...and probably 75 of the threads we comment on here are about little stuff (news articles, fluff pieces, etc). And personally, I am disappointed when I log into the site and see the same conversation in 15 different threads...how awesome Tannehill was in 2012. I don't think hardly anyone here logs in to talk about five years ago.

How does that change? Through new members carrying the torch and adding diversity. I'd argue that new members are a heck of a lot more important than people who have been here for 15 years rehashing the same stuff over and over, because they bring new conversations and challenge the old ones in new ways. And when those voices show up here, share an opinion and get cussed out/trolled, we all lose out as a whole.

Folks like Dirty are starting 10+ conversations a week- he's forum gold. Yet if you look through his overall post history for the past week, over half the comments were either defending himself or telling someone else to back off. That's what the new guy was trying to say...stop screwing with the folks who go out of their way to make this board better for everyone. And he's 100% right...people won't keep starting new threads if they're just going to get trolled for having an opinion.

Spot on IMO. Hence the reason I had suggested to dirty in another thread to expand on something as opposed to just posting a thread title. I chose not to do that again here, I simply added the context to the thread from the article to make life easier for some who maybe can't access it, and to add the context to the thread to make it easier to view. It's not asking much, really. It's not about length of time here, it's not about anything more than just giving the thread some content. I think his "objection" to that, and some others chiming in kind of spun it out of control from there. However, all I was trying to do was what you said... as someone who's been here since day 1 essentially, just trying to help guide along, and make things better to improve things for everyone.

Sorry folks, I really didn't think adding the context to it was going to spin into this, but at the end of the day we've all got the same goal in mind, and that's to talk Dolphins football and make things better here.

So, how about Landry and the deadline? Lets all move back on to Landry before we all get put in the corner

You didn't do anything wrong...but someone over-reacted to it and then the next guy over-reacted to that. Before you know it, everyone is throwing mud and the thread is basically dead. As the older members here, I think it's kind of our job to say, "Hey, it was a misunderstanding. Let's talk about some football." That's all I was trying to get across- we gain nothing by fighting with each other and in a lot of cases, we end up chasing off younger members for nothing.

Was Landry's post so bad that he deserved a profanity ridden reply?
