Last year this same week I was saying I wanted either Vontae Davis or Taylor Mays or Rey Maualuga. THings changed and Davis ended up going later then I thought but still ended a Phin. This year we are looking to have a high pick and I want to start my wish list now.
1. Eric Berry- I am sick of watching our safeties chasing wrs and want a ball hawk who can play sideline to sideline.
2. Ndamukong Suh- Guy has nose strength and end speed. He lives in the backfield and is extremely athletic.
3. Carlos Dunlap- Freak pass Rusher who can slide in at OLB and get at the QB.
4. Brandon Spikes- Ayodele is nothing and we need someone next to Crowder.
5. Arthur Jones- Makes plays in the backfield and for some reason I just see something when he plays

For me its Berry or Dez Bryant.

I like Suh quite a bit but I like him more as a 1 gap 3-4 player or a defensive tackle in a 4-3.

If not Bryant then I hope its Berry. I think the defense would be better with an elite safety.ToddsPhins likes this. -
At this time, it's our offense that's losing games for us although the defense could definitely use an improvement.
If Dez's character issues aren't panned out, then there is no WR that I would take over TE Gresham IMO, and that would be a tough call over Berry, but I might give the nod to Gresh. Ask Sanchez, Romo, or Ryan-- every young QB can really benefit from a great TE.
I think we should just make a list of the most explosive playmakers and start from there. Now, if we ended up picking 6th, I'd like to make a move to take both. LOL.

Is it me or does this seemingly talent laden draft look to be fizzling out a tad?

I've been sitting here for the past hour, watching Michigan v. Notre Dame, watching Brian Smith of ND and Obi Ezeh of Michigan. Two guys who could be 2010 or 2011 draftees. I like Smith, reminds me a bit of Keith Rivers but he takes some terrible angles when he plays the run. Ezeh is a pure cover linebacker. Doesn't know how to play the run or at least not in this game. Donovan Warren is a nice player too. I want to see more of Brandon Graham but he's looked pretty good thus far.ToddsPhins likes this. -

Sometimes the pick becomes tougher when you think about it coming from your own savings. LOL. Not referring to Suh...just saying in general. I forget that sometimes and have to remind myself. ;)
Alen, did you get to watch any of Houston's games yet? Curious how you feel about HB Bryce Beall. I really liked him, but maybe I missed some bad tendencies.
Oh.... Derrick Morgan was back to creating havoc vs UNC. I gotta put him as one of my top 4-3 DEs right now. Jury's still out as a hybrid.

If you get the chance to pick Eric Berry then I see no way that you pass it up. You're adding a Darren Sharper/Ed Reed type of player to your ball club. That to me is a huge no brainer. Dez Bryant is a tremendous talent and it's a decent bunch of interior linemen. A down the field threat at tight end would be nice. As would an ILB who actually makes plays.

If Berry were there at our pick, then I'd love to add him. I'm not sure I would use future picks for Dez, but if Gresham were sitting there in the 20's, then I'd have a difficult time not pulling the trigger to make it happen.... then still be able to nab a playmaking MLB like Micah Johnson in the 2nd....and a playmaking WR in the 3rd. IMO we desparately need 4 playmakers: 1 at TE, 1 at Safety, 1 at MLB, and 1 at WR.SJ2100 likes this. -

Berry or Spikes and I would be a happy fan.

I also look at the quality of this draft that might push a normally top 15 talent into the late 1st round. Next year could see the exact opposite. We don't know. I'll sacrifice an extra pick if the right player is sitting there waiting to be plucked. All I know is we need playmakers more than depth. I'll take 1 playmaker over 3 average contributors with a smile this draft and next.... since teams don't win by being average. LOL -
That's why I was referring to trading future picks. If a guy that we have graded out highly is available in the 20+ range, then why not sacrifice a little more than a future first round pick to get him (like Carolina did the past few years with Everette Brown and Jeff Otah...or Atl with Sam Baker)? -
Lets hypothetically say we plan on taking a Safety 1st this year and a playmaking WR 1st next year....IMO trading a 2011 1st and 3rd for an extra 2010 1st can also be looked at as: the 2011 3rd buys us a year of extra WR developmental time.
IE: we need a playmaking WR ASAP right? 2 scenarios to consider based on the learning curve of an NFL WR.
Scenario 1. Let's say we draft a top WR 1st in 2011 and he gives us 400 receiving yards as a rookie.
Scenario 2. We trade 2011 1st and 3rd to get comparable impact WR one year sooner in 2010. He also has 400 yards as a rook, but in his 2011 Soph year (when WR in scenario 1 would only be a rookie) he has 1100 yards and 10 TDs.
Is it worth giving up the extra 3rd (and maybe 5th) to get an extra 700 receiving yards in 2011? To me it is. To me it's like we're sacrificing our 3rd to get sooner results from a position that's lacking in production. -
I'd take Berry or Spikes over Dez at this point(but I wouldn't take Spikes in the top 10 either). I am just not a big proponent of drafting WRs or HBs high in the first round - not because I feel Dez isn't worthy of it - more of how I feel about certain positions.
Now that Henne is the starter, I want to see how Ginn performs once Chad gets settled in after a couple of starts and the coaching staff (hopefully) turns him loose down the field. If Teddy still shows the same inconsistencies when the ball is getting to him faster with more velocity, then I may change my tune on Mr. DezToddsPhins likes this. -

That could leave me with 1. Berry 1a. Gresham 2. MLB or playmaking WR (perhaps Micah Johnson or Mardy Gilyard) 3. MLB or playmaking WR -

I think Gilyard might be a slot guy at the next level because I wonder if he can consistently seperate against speedy corners. We have enough slot guys.
