My grandfather has always been one of my personal heroes. My parents divorced when I was 3, so in my early years he was (and still is) one of the major influences in my life. I have many great memories of spending time with him throughout my childhood, even when I was an angsty teenager. I've got a funny story about ducks and sewer ponds - but that's probably for another thread.
In the early 1990s, he had a heart attack, and a few years later, another one. Suddenly the man I thought was invincible proved he was much too human.
Later on my grandmother passed away, and a few years ago my mother, and my grandfather has always been my rock throughout the tough times. We drifted apart for a time, but these events brought us closer together, and I've been making a point to spend time with him over the last several years.
Tonight I just got word that my grandfather has invasive cancer in his bladder lining. We won't know more until his test results come back next Wednesday, but invasive cancer is one of the worst kinds you can get. I'm hoping that it was caught soon enough to not be life-threatening, but he's apparently had this condition for several months.
Please keep him in your thoughts.

I wanted to update all of you on my grandfather's condition. It's not exactly good news.
Here are some quotes from the doctor:
- It's not a good kind ...
- It's into the muscles of the bladder ...
- It's a very large tumor ... very flat like a pancake
- The doctor didn't get all of it out ...
- They don't know how long it has been there ...
- It may have moved out/may move out and go other places ...
- The cancer may have moved out to lymph nodes, bones, it could be growing in the ureter ...
We just have partial answers now; We know what type of cancer and that it's into the muscle wall of the bladder. It's at least a T-2 cancer into the bladder muscle wall, but we will need an x-ray. My grandfather will be getting a CT Scan and a Bone Scan next Tuesday at Hutchinson Clinic with, and we won't know more until we see the results.
Potential Solutions:
- Surgery: It's complicated to remove the bladder, and pointless if the cancer has spread beyond the bladder.
- Chemotherapy: There isn't a very high chance of curing it using chemo.

Hi all, here is the latest update on my grandfather. All things told, this is some positive news.
The doctors confirmed today that it is an aggressive, high grade T2 cancer. The good news is that there has been no obvious spread of the cancer at this point.
There's a couple of options that the doctors are considering:
- Removal of the bladder completely.
- Remove bladder and add chemotherapy if tissues surrounding bladder show cancer.
- Leave the bladder in and pursue chemo and radioactivity. Doctors termed this a "short-term" solution.
- Use just chemo. Doctors qualified this as a "substandard option. "
We are, at this point, moving towards #1. However, doctors must determine if my grandfather is actually healthy enough to undergo the surgery. He as another appointment on 11/10 that will be to determine that. Tentatively, they is scheduling him for bladder surgery the Friday after Thanksgiving, pending clearance.
Thanks again for all your well-wishes. It is appreciated. -
