These brothers I knew, used to give each other the same old dirty pair of jeans for Christmas.

It went back and forth for a awhile, until one them decided to put them in a garbage can filled garbage and wrapped that up. The next year, the other brother put the jeans in a small slab of concrete with just a piece sticking out and wrapped that up. The brother spent the year breaking it out of the concrete and then had them compacted in an old car and had that delivered to his brother with a bow.

Obviously this specific thing might be too much, but it could spring an idea.

How about sending her and her husband on a crazy, long and involved treasure hunt to end up finding a completely stupid thing. You could make it span the year, with certain events through out the year being clues so that they find it next Xmas day. You killed two Xmas days with one gift.
