OK folks. Mark it down.
There is so much parity in the NFL that when one team blows another out, IMO it's because there is a "perfect storm" of factors that come together in cumulative fashion to account for it.
We have that this week IMO.
Here they are:
Stats were taken from here:
- The Dolphins are underdogs, which often inspires an "us against the world" mentality and team unification in itself. There is strength in numbers and strength in unity.
- The Dolphins are coming off a bye week at 3-3. Away teams and teams with a .500 record or better historically have winning records after a bye week. We are both.
- The Jets are coming into a bye week as a home favorite following a loss. Home favorites coming into the bye week off a loss historically win only 39% of their games.
- Joe Philbin has recently remarked that the team leadership among the players has begun to develop, which IMO is an integral part of getting a team over the hump from mediocre to good.
- The Jets have said they plan to hurt Reggie Bush intentionally, which IMO stands to take the team unity generated by the emerging leadership Philbin mentioned and put it on steroids, as the team bands together to protect Bush and send the Jets a message that they will not be intimidated.
- The Dolphins are avenging a loss to the Jets in overtime earlier this season in which there was some question about whether Reggie Bush was intentionally hurt in that game, as well.
- The Jets' threat toward Bush stands to arouse and motivate the part of the team that has lain dormant the past few weeks, the running game, which showed early in the season it can be dominant.

Anyway, I think when you put all this together, you have a Dolphins team that stands to come out with steam coming out of its ears and takes a Jets team and disposes of it in true blowout fashion.
Get ready for a great one this week folks.

Okay, I'm on board. :knucks: Nothing like a Jets beat-down to warm my heart. I'm curious to see if Gaffney is a factor in this game. He should have working knowledge of the offense by now. Give Tannehill a third reliable WR and I think the kid will make the offense hum.

I could see a win, but would be pretty surprised to see a blowout. The Jets, without Revis, held Luck and the Colts to 9 points. I think that's a pretty good reference, since the Dolphins are ranked #22 in PPG and the Colts are 23rd. IF the Dolphins win this game, it'll be because of turnovers. The Jets are actually a +/- 0 for the season there, while the Dolphins are -3.
Vegas has it at Jets -2.5. Sounds about right. I expect this game to be close.P h i N s A N i T y and TiP54 like this. -
Sure, I'm game! Blow-out it is! Dolphins 27, Jets 6.

I don't know..... Rex has done a good job of taking the heat off his team. No one is talking about the effects of that loss to NE. Everyone, including the some stupid Fins players are mouthing off about Regis and Bush and Maybin and whoever, instead of what really counts....figuring out how to stop the jests and how to move the ball on them...If anything, I'm impressed with how Rexy has done this...whether it was planned or not, it's turned out to be a plus for them.
I think the Fins HAVE to play a perfect game to beat the jests, simply because that team matches well against our team, and has since Rexy has been there... I don't see a blowout...this fins team isn't quite good enough for that....yet. -
I would love to see the Dolphins win, but I certainly don't see a blowout. As much as I can't stand the Jets or their fans, they are a better team then a lot of people are giving them credit for. In fact they should have beat the Patriots last week in New England.
I don't see this being a very high scoring game and I think it will be around 17-14. It wouldn't surprise me if the Dolphins win the game, but it also won't surprise me if the Jets end up winning the game. These are basically two evenly matched team right now. -
Miami makes them a one trick pony with our run defense. All they have is the passing game and when you have Mark Sanchez to rely on I like our chances. There are a number of reasons that I agree this is going to be a blowout in the dolphins favor. I have some different bullit points.
1. Philibin coming off a bye week against a team that we already have some film on. I think this is going to make a huge difference.
2. Revis and Holmes both out. There are huge losses for their team.
3. Tannehill already has seen this defense and will be able to diagnose what they are doing at the line better.
4. Lastly, the Jets are a sinking ship, they just need that one event to sent it to the bottom. I think that is going to be this loss against the Phins. They are desperate, they know that they get this win, IMO desperate teams make a lot of mistakes.
Phins win 31 - 10 -
This guy is gonna have a big game

Divisional games are usually tight so I would be surprised by a blowout, happily surprised.

No offense intended here and I'll be glad to eat crow on this. I'd love to see a blowout. But, it just kills me how excited fans can get when a team gets a few wins. There is a long way to go before this team shows real reliability. Even in another 6 games we may not know much more (if they go 3-3 over that stretch they will be 6-6. And, they could win 4 in a row and get in the playoffs on a run; or they could then lose 4 in a row and be sitting on a #12-15 draft pick).
I think we have gotten ahead of ourselves with respect to the potential for this team. It is there but so is the potential to play mediocre or poorly and get blown out. I absolutely think they can win on Sunday but I would favor the Jets slightly b/c of the home game (even though I despise them more than any team - esp. Sanchez, who has been overrated since he stepped into the league). And b/c Miami's running game has yet to demonstrate it is where it needs to be. Certainly there is a lot of hope. But there is also still a talent dearth at certain positions.ssmiami, schmolioot, Berezo and 1 other person like this. -
I agree with you totally. While the Dolphins have improved with Tannehill at QB and Philbin as the head coach. The reality is that they have had three victories against opponents, which just aren't very good to begin with. Last year the Dolphins showed that they could beat the other mediocre teams in the league. What they haven't shown yet is that they can actually beat one of the top tier teams in the NFL.
I think with Tannehill, the Dolphins are certainly headed in the right direction. I just don't think they have the overall talent right now to reach the playoffs this season. The Dolphins have a easy schedule this season and therefore they should be able to win 7 or 8 games. They just don't have the secondary or the skilled position players on offense to win enough games to make the playoffs, IMO.
I have said for some time that next year is the year I expect the Dolphins to actually be a legitimate contender for a playoff spot. Hopefully with all their draft picks and the money they have under the salary cap, they will be able to fill the majority of the holes they have on the offense and in the secondary.
It is great to see that they may have actually found their answer at the QB position. Like you, I just think many fans on here are looking at this team right now through rose colored glasses and they fail to recognize that there are still many holes to fill before this can be a legitimate contender in the AFC. -

I have a hard time believing we can blow out a team that isn't a disaster (Raiders), but we shall see. The only blowout I can see is the Jaguars game. I hope they prove me wrong this sunday, would love to see one.
-
In other words, it's not like I'm putting forth some unsophisticated (and IMO inaccurate) sentiment like, "Wow, we're 3-3 and so much better than anyone thought! Now this team can blow people away!" -

I will not be surprised, no matter which team wins. The only thing that would surprise me is if one of the teams blows out the other team. I certainly hope you are right about the Dolphins winning the game by a wide margin, I just don't see it happening. -
I haven't read the whole thread, but IMO there are more factors that favor The Dolphins than the Jets. I think the Dolphins are the more talented, better team, but not by a wide margin. It's close enough that either team could win if based on that alone. And division games in general tend to be close, most likely based upon familiarity. But almost all the intangibles in this case seem to favor Miami. I don't think Ryan has done his team any favors by his comments this week. I see Miami as the more focused team generally (and improving) and I expect they will be even more highly focused this week. I also have faith that Philbin and the staff will do a good job of making adjustments coming off the bye. I'm talking about general fine tuning and Jet specific adjustments.
-
I also feel that a blowout victory is in the cards for reasons that I`m not even sure of. Its not purely based on hope alone but I think all the signs point to a Dolphin win by a huge margin. I`ve read this book and seen this movie a thousand times,if you get my drift. If the Jets got blown out by the Patriots last week this matchup would scare the hell out of me. Dont ask me to explain, It is what it is.
