Packers “unlikely” to use franchise tag on Flynn

Getty ImagesTwo weeks ago, a stellar, record-setting performance from Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn sparked speculation that the Packers could use the franchise tag on the free-agent-to-be, in order to prevent him from hitting the open market in March.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers are “unlikely” to do so.
Though they have several more weeks to make a final decision, use of the tag would entail significant risk. The Packers would have to offer Flynn a one-year salary that is expected to be in the range of $14.5 million.
That’s $6.5 million more than Aaron Rodgers‘ base salary for 2012.
Also, once the contract is offered to Flynn, he’d surely sign it — making the money fully guaranteed.
Then there’s the fact that any team trading for Flynn would have to sign him to long-term deal, with $14.5 million in 2012 serving as the starting point.
In the end, the maneuver probably entails far more risk than G.M. Ted Thompson will be willing to assume. Unless, of course, a team desperate to secure “dibs” on Flynn works discreetly with the Packers to set up a sign-and-trade scenario that allows Flynn to receive a fair contract, to go to his desired destination, and to allow the Packers to get some compensation for developing the seventh-rounder into one of the hottest names on the free-agent market. Even if the Packers only get a mid-round pick, the ability to ensure that he goes to an AFC team could make the Packers more inclined to try to work something out — especially if the Raiders and new G.M. Reggie McKenzie, a long-time Packers employee, decide to make a play for Flynn.
Other teams that could be interested in Flynn include the Browns, Redskins, Dolphins, and Seahawks.

Wow. What the hell was that?
Let me help out:

I think it's more than a possibility that we atleast inquire about Matt Flynn. Don't see us getting a QB in the draft unless Washington rolls the dice on Flynn and Cleveland drafts more talent to put around Colt McCoy. IN all fairness to McCoy he had nobody to throw to this past season. I think he may get one more chance as the Browns QB. Atleast thats what i'm hoping for.
Flynn to Washington
McCoy gets a second chance
We draft Griffin. -

They'd be in cap hell if they franchised him and nobody traded for him. A bargain if you keep him in a similar system.
-
Washington signs him, it does set up the "Is Cleveland thinking of the next A.P. in Trent Richardson" scenario.

I wouldn't have any objection to picking up Flynn, but the downside is we'd hsve to pay him a buttload of money, most likely significantly more than a team like the Seahawks would pay.

money is better than giving up draft picks but if hes a system qb will he work here is the question

I'd rather risk some money than trade an entire draft personally....Flynn and Moore can go at in camp. Flynn is unknown to a large degree, I can't see someone giving him a unbelievable contract, he's going to get a lot of guaranteed money but the deal could be structured to not kill the cap if he doesn't pan out. I don't care if trading for a backup or signing someone didn't work out before, if the draft isn't going to fall our way we need more than Moore and a late round pick/UFA if we want to compete in the East next year.

What leads you to believe that? -

Yes, change to the WCO. Remember A.J. Feely of the Eagles? A WCO QB who could never figure out Pornstache offense?
If your signing Flynn with $18-24 million then let him do what he has shown he does best. -

I'm not saying he'll certainly not go before the 3rd, but if I had to bet on if he'd still be on the board after rd2 or not, I know where I'd put my money. -
If the Packers are not going to franchise Flynn we'd have to take a try for him. Realistically we have 2 options, Flynn or give up a bunch to get RG3. I'd rather keep our picks and get Flynn in here. Flynn is not a sure thing but he was terrific in the Detroit game. Last year he was 24 of 37 for a 64.9 complettion pct, 251 yards, 3 td's and a pick in his only start last year against the Pats. Those aren't bad numbers to back up his Detroit game with.

But Armando said:

He could be this years Kevin Kolb. The issue would be the cap hit if you cut him... And I'm hearing Kolb is likely to be released by the Cardinals already... how can that be possible considering he signed such a lucrative contract? Well, could it be that the Cards actually protected themselves in the form of a roster option that they could choose not to exercise, or at least something similar to that which would releasing him somewhat palatable??? Would the team signing Flynn want to do something similar? -
The thought of overpaying for Flynn because we're desperate to find a qb scares me. Best available option doesn't make him good.
-
And even if we don't sign Flynn I have zero desire to trade up for Griffin. If he falls into our lap at 8/9 so be it, but I DO NOT want to trade extra picks/players for him. -
But not go after him because you're afraid he might suck is silly. You can't play scared, and you can't GM scared. You have to take chance. Just take calculated, intelligent one. -

Kolb was TRADED. Flynn is an unknown as to whether he will be traded or be a FA. If he is a FA, you have less control in the process because you will be bidding against other teams ALSO interested in him, so to say we could sign him to this or that is dreaming. He will take the best paying offer he gets. Pay up or move on. I see him getting a BIGGER contract than Kolb with more guaranteed money. While that makes him a bigger gamble, going this route allows us to use our draft picks to acquire some other much needed talent, which has already been brought up, but.....
