Pretty simple idea for a thread; pick the top rated prospects you think will be busts at the next level. Easy rules; prospects must be likely to go in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft and you must explain your reasoning. You don't have to think these prospects will turn out to be JaMarcuss Russell 2.0 but try not to pick people you think are simply overrated.
Mine are;
1. Jarvis Jones (OLB). Injury question-marks all over him despite being allowed to play by Georgia, the injury he's got has forced people out of the game before. He's slow for a linebacker at 4.92 and doesn't have much room to add to his 245lb frame if you want to play him elsewhere. The main problem i have with him though; is that he doesn't seem to have the ability to get sacks when his strength won't get him there, and against NFL lines that is going to be a tougher proposition.
2. Geno Smith (QB). Shouldn't be the number 1 QB prospect in this draft in my opinion, though he has a good arm his footwork means he doesn't always get everything behind throws and too many balls sail leading to plays made by the defense. Has a tendency to lock into a first receiver and throw them the ball no matter the coverage. Slow to recognize routes coming open and likes to see his receivers open before making the throw, taking time he won't have at the next level. He was made better by the players around him, specifically his receivers rather than making them better.
3. Manti Te''o (ILB). Will never be allowed to be a leader in a NFL locker room after the fiasco with his fake girlfriend, negating any abilities he may have in this area. He's slow and isn't overly athletic running a 4.78 at only 241lbs. My main problem is that against a team who were prepared to test and run at him in Alabama he really struggled, losing almost every battle he had with one of their lineman and not showing the ability to avoid them or shed blocks. Seems more like a pplayer you can get away with rather than someone who will improve your team.
Discuss, post your own and feel free to call me an idiot when all go to the pro bowl next year:up:.

Agree with #'s one and two, especially #2 :shifty:
Manti Te"o is going to be an absolute sleeper. The fiasco will do nothing but help out whichever team drafts him. Somebody is going to get a top 5 pick somewhere in the 20's.BlameItOnTheHenne and Jcouch1021 like this. -
Geno Smith- doesn't seem to read defenses well or look off receivers and is inaccurate. Benefitted mightily from having Austin and Bailey to throw to.
Cornelious Washington- such a talented athlete and such a questionable player. After going over a bunch of game film I can see why he had all of one half of a sack on the year and 22 tackles- he's the least instinctive player I saw all year. I wanted very much to like this guy as a pass rusher for Miami and the regular season film did very little to make me want to invest a pick in him. Might be worth a 6th or 7th rd pick to see if the lights go on, but I have serious doubts.
Ezekiel Ansah- if some want to justify spending a high round pick on a DE who is nearly incompetent at beating an OT straight up, one on one, to get to a QB in the pocket- have at it. If some want to spend a premium pick on a player who can be an elite garbage play DE cleaning up plays at the LOS through horizontal pursuit, have at it. He's undeniably physically talented, but I wouldn't draft him in the 2nd round much less the first. Imo he has now become the most overrated player in the draft.
4. Barkevious Mingo- he's too small for DE and can he play OLB? He's good at using his speed to fly to the ball, but what else can he do? Maybe he'll be this year's Bruce Irvin, maybe he won't. Definite bust potential imo.
5. Jarvis Jones- I can't figure this guy out. Super productive, very unique style, but I don't know if that style will translate to the NFL. He just ran close to a 5.0 40 at his pro day iirc, that doesn't bode well.
I'll add Patterson to the boom or bust list as well.azfinfanmang likes this. -

Sometimes I cant help but be a smart ***. These are the busts I pick.
NolesNPhinsFan, BlameItOnTheHenne, Alex13 and 10 others like this. -
My bust targets would be: Geno Smith, Landry Jones, Dion Jordan, and Barkevious Mingo. -
Jordan has something to prove as per pass rushing ability imo, he gets kicked out wide by OTs far too often. -
Landry Jones will stick around in the league only because he has the big arm. Those guys usually stay around.

I see Ansah being the ultimate boom or bust prospect in this years draft, supremely talented athlete but hasn't been playing football that long; seems like he'd be a good pick by a contender who can develop him towards the end of the 1st round rather than a top 10 team needing immediate production.
Mingo and Moore are in the same boat as far as i'm concerned, are they DEs, are they OLBs? Both lack strength and have fallen since the combine after having good seasons, they both could end up finding a spot in this league but have question marks over them.
@shula guy i was waiting for someoneBpk likes this. -
Not saying they WILL bust, just see the potential for being boom or bust types:
-Matt Barkley, just not feeling his game, avg athlete, avg arm, he'll probably be over drafted.
-Sheldon Richardson, he seems neither fish nor fowl, he's not even Ziggy Hood imo
-Cordarelle Patterson, raw, if the wrong team drafts him thinking they can coach him up I suspect he'll be labeled a 'disappointment" if he lands on the right team say Pitt, he could flourish
-Dion Jordan, I love this prospect's game, but look at it this way, is he a OLB or 4-3 DE? CAn he protect his legs and does he show play recognition for either DE or OLB?
Guys I think will surprise:
-Geno Smith, here is how the league works in my view, a "new" concept comes into the league and flourishes for 2 MAYBE 3 yrs, I don't think he is a wonderful Qb prospect I do think he is at the right moment in time.
-Honey Badger, oh sure, he is weaker than a punter and loves pot waay to much, and has questionable 40 time speed. What he was though, is the best player on a talented LSU defense in the toughest conference in semi pro football. To compare him to a fmr NFLer, it would be Terrel Buckley.
-Giovanni Bernard, Rb's are devalued in today's NFL, this guy dominated a game with a bad ankle which is sort of the anti Daniel Thomas model.
-Manti Te'o, if there was no social media, what sort of prospect would he be? Granted he had a poor game vs Alabama but keep in mind Saban was a good NFL coach, Te'o was a college student think they game planned that heavily to neutralize him? Of course, and he was unpreppared. Will that carry over to the pros? IMO, no. -
I love Dion Jordan as a prospect, though i think if someone thinks he's a DE they will be disappointed, OLB all the way for me.
Honey Badger should be a good nickle corner if he can stay off the drugs, he's got the talent and has rare play making ability, he will improve someones defense.
I don't know what people see in Te'o to suggest he can dominate in the NFL, he's not big, he's slow and he doesn't seem to do anything special beyond read the game better than most college players. When he has to face the kind of players he will in the pro's who are bigger and better than those at 'bama he's going to get run over again. -
Patterson - There are intelligence questions and he's really raw as a route runner. One year producers often fail.
Barkley - I like him but he underwhelms athletically.
Manti Teo - I think he needs to be protected by his DL or it'll look a lot like the Natl. championship game. So what system he ends up in is key. -

Gonna need more busts to choose from.
Shula only provided one.
Let's move, people!shula_guy likes this. -
Wait...what?????
Really need to take a look at what I just did. The kid dominated so many games while playing MLB. He can do lots of things others can't, and yes, there is a mental edge he has as well. Haven't seen that since...well, since JT's brother in law retired..... IJSJcouch1021 likes this. -

I am not sure I see that make up in Te'o. I don't see quite as quick feet in short areas. Nor am I as sure he'll be as sacrificial with his body. Sometimes it helps to be undersized and drafted lower as you always feel you have to make the team. Don't know that Te'o would be that. I would not draft him in round 1. Top/middle of round 2, he has value. And, in the right D he will have value.bmicO likes this. -
There are college players each year who come out having dominated the game who don't make it at the next level, just look at a certain member of the Jets squad. At the NFL level everyone reads the game well and everyone is athletic, Te'o only checks one of those boxes and when he had to face bigger, quicker opponents he couldn't make plays.
He could be a decent player in a team that asks its linebackers to play zone a lot and has a dominant defensive line, but he can't cover the seam busting tight ends and he will struggle against the run occasionally and when you spend a first round pick on an ILB those aren't traits you want to see. -
Manti was argue ably one of the top 3 best defensive players in the county. Not just this year as well

So he had a bad showing against Alabama. Pretty sure he is the only player on the planet that has ever happened to. I watched enough other Notre Dame games to realize this kid is really really good at just about every aspect of the game, and he is mentally tough.
The fact he is going to fall 12-15 spots just because of one silly incident is going to make a defensive coordinator look very good very quickly.Jcouch1021 likes this. -

All that being said, even without being a leader, the kid is still one hell of a very good defensive football player. Can't ever take that away from him.Jcouch1021 likes this. -
Still had 10 tackles against bama...

Andddd he looked like **** in that game, but honestly questioning his leadership is Bull... He's been the leader of that d for practically 3 years. Not to mention one of the most decorated high school athletes out there. Kid is a stud. Don't go by combine #s or some dumb girlfriend bull ****. Go by how he played on tape, and quite possibly be watching one of the next great ILB of our time. We won't know until he plays on Sunday but he looks amazing on tHe field. If he's there at 2a I'm highly considering it, at 2b you just have to take him unless he gets a leg amputated
-
You mentioned Lewis but he was already an all pro player when the incident happened and frankly people are going to be a lot more comfortable giving it out about someone's girlfriend that about murdering someone. -
Will he get crap? Of course he will. He's a rookie, they ALL get crap.
His dose of crap might even make it to the first pre season game. I seriously doubt it but it might. Guess what? That's what helps guys bond. He hasn't done anything wrong. Just naive. He's an islander. It happens, much more than you think. College kids play pranks on each other all the DAMN time.
If this kid wasn't as good as he is, none of us ever would have heard about it.padre31 likes this. -

Dion Jordan could be a dominant 3-4 olb

Really hard to say where this kid projects in terms of the Draft. Seems like he has been falling pretty steady for 6 weeks or so. I have heard rumors of laziness amongst Aggie fans here in Dallas.Bpk likes this. -
The dude is number 3 in Notre Dame history in regards to tackles.
He had 3 consecutive years of 100 + tackles.
He struggles to get off blocks? You might want to make him aware of that :confused2: -
