Last night my buddy was telling me he heard a sportscaster predicting Tannehill would break Marino's records. Honestly, I think he was just talking out of his *** to see what kind of a reaction he could elicit. But if he's telling the truth then some people somewhere are still comparing him to Marino...which is asinine at this point in his career (and likely at any point in his career!) but hey. Makes for good sports talk tv and radio...I guess.

 

If Tanny can give us numbers roughly equivalent to Chad Pennington's 2008 numbers, I would be ecstatic. I don't need 1984 Marino, just give me the best QB performance by a Dolphins QB in recent memory.

Dear Lord Baby Jesus, we hope you can use your baby jesus powers on Ryan Tannehill, the QB we all hope we finally have.

 

Even Pennington, great as his 2008 season was, was still just a really good regular season QB, but not a very good playoff QB. He was never going to win us a Super Bowl even with a good shoulder. So there's that. Hopefully RT will learn to be a very good QB and not just in the regular season but in future playoff appearances as well.

With all due respect to Chads 2008, I expect Tannehill to have more yards and TD's and a lower completion percentage. And I dont expect Tannehill to have so few Ints even though id love if he did. 2nd year qbs still make a few mistakes.

Theres 3 numbers that i want from Tannehill this year...the first 2 are personal stats and the 3rd team related:
1. 30 Tds passing
2. 4000 yards passing
3. at least 10 wins

And the fact is that the only reason I feel those numbers are achievable are because I feel like this is the first time since Marino we have a QB capable of hitting franchise qb expectations.

 

The yardage isn't completely unreasonable (I'd think more like 3,800), but I think 30 TDs passing is at least 5 TDs too many to be reasonable.

 

I agree with Philbin on the the three things that Ryan needs to improve on.

Decision making..needs to get us good situations pre snap, and for example, don't throw the screen pass if you see it covered.

Accuracy..still not worried about this as I feel it will improve naturally as he adjusts his inner clock and it starts to catch up to the speed of this game, when I start to see relaxed feet, shoulder deeks, quick upper body movements to look off defenders, accuracy will improve.

Play making ability at critical points in the game..This is where we hope that his inexperience will where off and he will be able to perceive the rush better and get himself out of trouble with more precision.

Agree with Philbin as well when it comes to Weeden, such good arm talent..

 

Some of that is coming from the fact that Tannehill set passing records in college and last season with us. He now holds the Dolphins' single-game record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback, surpassing Marino's 83 record. He was 2 yards shy of owning the NFL record. This kid can be special.

 

Maybe so but its basically 2 per week. No reason he cant. The skills are there...all he needs is for his players to catch the ball and Jon Martin to keep him upright.

 

I am kinda with this as well. I think he will be on the cusp of 4k passing, either just over or just under. And that would be fantastic.

I think 30 TDs may be a tad bit of a stretch, and think 24-26 is more realistic. BUT, I definitely wanna see 2:1 for TD:INT ratio.

With these numbers from RT, I think the 10-wins would take care of themselves. Add in a coupla more that our D can steal and we are sitting pretty.

 

My prediction has been 4000 yds, 22-12 TD/INT. That's the level where I'd have very few complaints about RT.

 

I know I'm repeating myself but I think 30 TD's belongs in a bold predictions thread. Over the last 3 seasons there have been only 5 QB's in each season to throw 30 TD's. Going back further that number goes down progressively until 2006 when only Manning managed it.

To put this into perspective, Brady has managed over 30 TD's 4 times in his career (2007 with Moss and the last 3 seasons). I'll be amazed if Tannehill is anywhere near 30 TD's this year, if he is we are going to have a really good season.

Anything over 20 with a healthy 2:1 int ratio will be a stellar season imho (should get a QB rating of around 90 then).

 

Nothing more needed to be said after the above.

 

I'm at the point now where I'd sleep with Philbin. I'm not saying I'm looking forward to it, but if I must...........

Honestly, if Tannehill's turnover numbers were lower last year, and Carp hits a couple of field goals, we were in the playoffs likely, and the media would be hyping him almost as much as the others. Of course it's hard to have low turnover numbers last year when working with the mess we called wide receivers last year. It's a shame Keller isn't going to play this year, because I think with him in the offense, Ryan would have had an outstanding year. The stage is still set for him to have a really good year anyways though.

Touchdowns should increase with the increase in talent at the WR position, and that should hopefully cut down on his INT's. You've got to be thinking positive about Tannehill right now, at least I am. Especially after hearing/reading about how he's watched all the tape from last year, and all his mistakes, and tried to learn from them etc. If he can apply that knowledge to his performance on the field, then we should be quite alright with this kid for many years.

 

Im aware of that but I think the supporting cast was really a huge detriment to Tannehill last year as far as weapons go. If Gibson and Sims can be average at their positions then I think 30 tds can be a reality. Tannehill wrecked shop on a few good d's last year like Seattle and Arizona and got a rookie lesson vs SF and NE. Adding weapons will help him a lot.

 

and...just maybe... a wr (wallace) can score a touchdown on a screen or a slant

 

Pennington was the second highest rated quarterback in 2008. If Tannehill finishes the year second in passer rating, we're going to win a lot of games. I'd be ecstatic if he put up Pennington's numbers.

That's all good stuff, but what Tanehill has to do is to stop staring down receivers and telegraphing where he's throwing the ball, learn how to look off receivers and get exponentially better on 3rd downs and in clutch situations.

Hartline had a great game- 250 yards or whatver- it was one game, same as Tanehill's big game last year. Having seen most or all of Marino's starts in 1883 (I don't remember how many games might have been blacked out, same for 1984), there is no comparison. Marino started maybe 10 games and had around 3 times as many touchdowns as interceptions- I'm pulling for Tannehill like everyone else here, but Tannehill's big yardage rookie game has little bearing as per Marino.

A good start will be Tannehill playing a solid game, being effective on 3rd downs, minimizing his mistakes and hopefully outplaying Weeden, whom I'm a fan of. Both Quarterbacks have quite a bit to prove this year, we'll see which one can make the quantum leap.

 

I think what you think is staring down receivers is actually the result of Hartline and Bess as your only viable pass targets on a given play.

You missed the point. I wasn't making a comparison. I was stating a fact. Tannehill owns the team record and came 2 yards of the NFL record. That has nothing to do with Marino.

Tannehill showed a lot of poise last season for a guy who had like 16 starts in 19 college games at QB when he came to us. He showed a lot of progress by the end of the season, especially after the knee brace came off and he was able to step into his throws again.

This preseason he threw 6 TDs, most of which were dropped. Having more receiving targets and reps with them will help his progress more as he builds chemistry with them. People seem to forget that he had us in position to win 9-10 games last season. Thats why we have a new kicker, receivers, and LBs and DBs. He wasn't the problem in the "clutch".

 

i think tanne has the skills to be the dolphins qb for the next 12 or so years. i look forward to his continued improvement,, and not having to find a qb in a qb driven league. we found our guy.

 

You say that it has nothing to do with Marino, yet you brought up Marino... Not sure why you would bring up Marino if he's irrelevant to your point. Regardless, it's just one game, and that's a far cry from performing well all season as Marino did his rookie year. The one big game last year is a silver lining- nice, but not that big of a deal. Tannehill showed some potential last year, but I don't think that he was really all that good- pretty good for a rookie QB, we'll see if he can make that leap this year. Marino, Luck, Russell Wilson- they showed an inherent knack for the game, an innate ability to play the position right- I just didn't see that from Tannehill, but I remain hopeful. I can't think of one top notch QB that locks on to receivers and telegraphs his throws as Tannehill does, that's my biggest gripe with him. He did it at Texas A&M, he did it with Miami last year and he has to show that he can change that, get out of the bad habit.

I'm as happy as anyone else that we signed Mike Wallace, but I don't think that Tannehill was very good in the clutch last year, and his 3rd down efficiency was statistically horrendous if I recall correctly- granted, his supporting cast wasn't all that strong. He has a lot of talent and I'm looking forward to seeing him play this year, but imo he'll never be great or very good for that matter until he proves that he can stop locking on to receivers and become efficient on 3rd downs and in clutch situations. I liked Brandon Weeden more than Tannehill coming out of college and I think that he's a better QB now- I'm looking forward to seeing both QBs play in the same game, I hope that Tannehill proves me wrong.
