Simple fact that he's not played as well as Luck, Griffin or Wilson, regardless of supporting cast.

But at the same time, he's not had a very good supporting cast and so he could be performing better if his guys made plays for him.

 

He's making the mistake that many have made in comparing Tannehill to Luck, Griffin and Wilson. If you consider that, and that only, then yeah, it's easy to come to the conclusion that he may not be the guy. However, if you consider all the factors i.e his lack of experience in college and his supporting cast, then it's safe to say a little more time is needed.

I don't think I need to compare the Colts, Redskins and Seahawks WR's and TE's to the Dolphins to further illustrate my point, as I'm sure everyone is well aware of the disparity.

This is one of the reasons why I wanted MMore to start this year, imo we are in the playoff hunt if he had started.

Everyone considers Eli Manning elite and he started his career with a 55 qb rating. Then followed it up with a 75, 77 and 73.

He was so raw coming out HKx, I wanted him to sit for a year, imo the Franchise needed a good season instead we are sub mediocre..again.

 

Tannehill's biggest disadvantage is that he happened to come out at the same time as Luck and RGIII.

Being compared to those guys is always going to be a negative for him. I am not sure Tanny will ever be elite level, but if he can be a Joe Flacco/Andy Dalton type then that is probably good enough and about as good as you are likely to find outside of having the #1 pick ina year with a stud prospect.

 

The problem with doing what you suggest is, what if Matt Moore leads the team to a similar record, and goes 8-8? Now you've had another mediocre season and don't know what you have in your young QB nor have you given him the experience he desperately needs. I agree that the franchise needed a good season, but after Marshall and Vontae trades were made with no additional trades or signings to replace them, I'm not sure how likely a successful season was going to be, MMoore at QB or no.

 

I would very much prefer not to be stuck taking refuge in the Eli Manning comparison.

I expect improvement in 2013, or at the latest the first half of 2014.

 

Not sure I really care what Adam Schefter thinks, but it's certainly a reality that Dolphins fans need to be aware of.

If you're going to start a rookie quarterback, you've got to have the stomach for the realities of it. It's easier than it has been in years past, but there are still quarterbacks who go on to be quite good that end up taking their lumps early, and the guys who have succeeded early might not actually be the answer.

 

Adam Schefter is the most plugged-in, consistently accurate NFL reporter there is.

...but he is no way qualified to make personnel evaluation.

Most be a slow day for him to take time to chatter about an irrelevant team's quarterback on that clown's show.

I wouldn't either. I do not consider him elite. However since everyone else does, he can be a good example of times it takes more than one season for a quarterback to become "elite."

 

Not playing better than Weeden wouldn't really concern me, but not playing better than Foles certainly does.

 

I agree, and if we do retain Ireland then I don't see how anything other than the playoffs is at all an acceptable outcome.

 

Honestly, as crazy as it seems, Cleveland might have better offensive talent than us.

They probably do. I meant more from the standpoint that Weeden is more polished. I thought he'd come in right away and do well.

 

I was as big a fan of Weeden's as you get, and it would concern me. If the two quarterbacks taken immediately above you look better than you, and THREE quarterbacks taken below you look better than you as well...that's a problem. At that point you question the pick. Even if it's premature, which it would be. Yeah we're high on Ryan Tannehill and optimistic. But we'd be just as high and optimistic on Nick Foles if he played for us, and Brandon Weeden if he played for us. And we'd be even higher and more optimistic on Luck, Griffin or Wilson if they played for us, obviously.

 

And yet, Tannehill cleanly beat Moore out during the preseason. This idea that Moore would somehow be out preforming Tannehill is strange considering how Moore played when he was in direct competition with Tannehill.

 

the word Elite... the most over used word in the NFL since Eli said he was Elite... yeah lets cast Tanny out 13 weeks into the season. He may not be RGIII but Im glad because RGIII is not going to have a long career unless he learns not to get hit. I like RGIII but I feel like hes going to be like Vick in the sense where its going to be tough for him to put a full season together without getting hurt. Tanny will get better, and we have to be patient. Rome was not built in a 16 week season.

 

It shocks me that so few members of the media grasp the fact that good QBs make WRs around them better and it doesn't often work the other way around. People making excuses for Tannehill saying that Luck and RGIII have Garcon and Hilton are ignoring the fact that these are most likely average WRs made to look good by elite rookie QBs.

This thread will probably be at least 15 pages and ruffle all kinds of feathers, but no Dolphin fan should be able to say at this point in time that Ryan Tannehill is definitely the answer. 8 TDs in 14 games is grotesque, regardless of surrounding talent. But he has also flashed some pretty impressive talent at times so you can't count him out.

 

I made this same argument before the season. I think Cleveland has better talent overall and I'm not surprised they've won three in a row, nor do I think they're done winning this season. I don't think they have as good coaching as Miami, though.

I notice that their fan base are really rallying around Tom Heckert Jr asking that he not be fired. New management seemed to have its mind made up on that one when they took over.

Heckert would likely be a candidate for the Miami GM job if Ireland were fired.

Did you watch the Redskins Thanksgiving game? If so then you know what it looks like for a good WR unit to make the QB look better.

 

Cleveland has put together some nice players, but like most teams they needed a QB. If Weeden ends up being the guy, then they are on their way to at elast being competetive.

Heckert would be a pretty good choice if Ireland were let go. As would Scott McCloughan. He was the guy that actually drafted most of the players that are good on the 49ers.

 

I know nothing about the guy, but that would be scare the **** out of me. When I talk about teams and organizations that just don't get the fact that the NFL has changed and that the blueprint for building teams must change with it, the only team I've thought has been a bigger offender than Miami in that regard is the Cleveland Browns. Maybe it was more Holmgren, but still.

 

I'm curious as to why you think that about the Browns?

If what you're getting at is the WR and TE position they have been far more aggressive about upgrading the pass catching talent at those positions than Miami has. Far more aggressive.

 

If I'm evaluating the GM, I'm concerned if RG and Wilson become better, both players were attainable.

 

Did you watch the Redskins in 2011? If so then you know what it looks like for the exact same WR corps (plus Davis, minus Garcon) to make John Beck and Rex Grossman look like John Beck and Rex Grossman.

 

Cleveland's only real sin in that regard is trading Julio Jones for what they did. They got a bevy of picks but it can certainly be argued that one Julio Jones was the better option.

They did deal a 2nd rounder for Gordon in the supplemental draft who looks like the real deal and they drafted a first round QB and the only RB who has come out in awhile that I thought truly worthy of a top 5 pick

I think you are all over reacting. He is a ****ing rookie with a ****ing rookie head coach with the worst supporting cast in the NFL. Seriously, I am not sure if there is a less talented team offensively. He is going to fine once he has receivers that can get open on a semi-consistent basis and he dials his amp down from 11 on the deep balls. Other than that...Tanny has played about as good as can be expected.

And Schefter knows people but he isn't who I would go to for talent evaluation. His skills are telling you what other people think of talent.
