on Dion Jordan? He only had 2 sacks as a pass rushing specialist and didn't see much of the field either. Did the Dolphins make a huge mistake on trading up and picking Dion Jordan 3rd overall? The other teams in the AFC East had at least a rookie that made a huge impact.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing . Anything can happen over next few years which could result in us not making a mistake on Jordan (ever the optimist I am)

Dion cost us a 1st AND a 2nd....that's a lot.
He needs to be on the field, making impact plays.Larry Little, Phins_Fan_87, Da 'Fins and 1 other person like this. -
I think it was a mistake because we badly needed offensive line help.

We will be MUCH closer to an answer regarding Jordan at the end of the 2014 season. Even then, I think he would flourish as a 3-4 OLB and might be closer to average as a 4-3 DE. I am fine with blaming Ireland if he does not work out, but coaching and system are key aspects of Dion having success.

As it stands now, it definitely appears to me a mistake. However, some great players need time to develop. In the future, we may end up loving the pick. (I hope). I really do not like trading up unless it's for a QB and we did give up a lot. It's understandable to be disappointed. He has great potential, a great skill set and great physical gifts, but he has to hopefully develop. So, as it stands now, it was a terrible move. We just have to suck it up and hope he is like several other players who needed the time to develop, though if you are trading up and giving up that much, one would think he should be able to come in and contribute a lot more.

Even though I blame the coaches for not incorporating him despite his obvious talent, we have to keep in mind that Dion played all season coming off a serious injury during which he lost a fair amount of size and speed. And as I've seen many fitness buffs here mention, its nearly impossible to build your body back up like that during the season. It typically requires a full offseason, which Dion did not have until now.
It would not be fair to judge him based on just this past season.
In terms of strategy though, he's the ultimate example of taking BPA in the draft. So anyone who subscribes to that theory can't be upset that we took him instead of OL. -
Of course it was a mistake, why are you still questioning that. He costs $5 mil, he cost draft picks, and is a non impact player. It's not complicated.

Sheldon Richardson won DROY, Kiko Alonso in 2nd; Did the Dolphins make a huge...
I wanted star. Which would of worked out great because we could of let both DTs walk and with Vernon coming out with a strong season.
For last season alone yes it was an obvious mistake. But whether it was a total mistake, we don't know yet.Ohio Fanatic, gafinfan, Da 'Fins and 2 others like this. -
What doesn't get emphasized enough about Dion Jordan, is the fact that we traded up and drafted a guy with shoulder issues, PLUS he was a part time player for Oregon. He is ridiculously athletic, but so was Ronnie Brown.. Feels like this guy went up the boards just like Ronnie did because of his athleticism more than anything... 2011 he had 7 sacks and 2012 he had 5 sacks for Oregon... so this guy was not some sack specialist by any means... Not to mention he was subpar against the run.
-
I don't know that it's a mistake yet. Sheldon Richardson amassed 33 pressures in just over 500 snaps. Dion Jordan amassed 24 pressures in 200 snaps.
Now, Richardson was a stout run defender as well, but Jordan flashed much greater pass rushing potenttiall. We''ll have a better idea if it was a mistake this time next year.gunn34, Ducken, Bpk and 1 other person like this. -
To be fair, going up to #3 from #12 for only a second was a GREAT deal (according to the Draft Value Trade chart). Not that that really matters if the guy you select is a bust or just average. I will hold out hope for Jordan in 2014.
It is amazing, now that we can reflect on the 2013 make-or-break season, how badly Ireland did with his final draft. As for free agency, he was moderately successful in fixing the WR corp, poor in revamping the LB corp, and an EPIC fail with the OL. How bad is the OL? Even devoting the draft and free agency to the OL this off-season I doubt we can get to better than "average". Which might be enough for a playoff spot though, so I'll take it. -

Dolphins fans continue to suck...
1). There were no offensive lineman worth taking @ number 3 that would of had any impact.
2). Vernon's sack numbers are deceiving. He's not a great pass rusher. His 11 sacks were the result of the talent around him more so than his own, IMO. Think Lorenzo Bromwell, Kenny Mixon, Trace Armstrong, and Ogun.
3). Dion Jordan is a ****ing ROOKIE. A ROOKIE. We just going to act like he's a bust because he didn't make the pro bowl his rookie season? The sky is the limit for him.
I'd rather draft Dion Jordan, who was the BPA @ 3, than Richardson the DROY. Richardson is a one trick pony that plays a position that's rather easy to fill with talent. DT's grow on trees... Dion Jordan is a dynamic player and physical freak of nature that doesn't come along very often. Once he settles is, gets bigger and stronger, he's going to be a stud.2socks, Ducken, GMJohnson and 1 other person like this. -
The mistake was not letting Jordan play and drafting at a position that wasn't a need. That's why BPA is a load of crap. You have to have a hole for that player to fill.
He made plays while he was out there, stats might not always show it, but he did change the game at times. A few hits in the QB that caused INT's. But do you bench Vernon who is playing well, to see what Jordan has? I don't think you do. -

Last years draft was as excited as I've been as a Dolphins fan. For once, we had made some smart trades to accumulate a lot of draft picks. I remember thinking with 5 picks in the 1st 3 rounds, that it would be a game changer for our organization.
Instead, we traded up for a situational pass rusher with a shoulder injury, an OL who couldn't crack the starting lineup of the worst OL in the NFL and 2 CB's who were rarely seen or heard from. Jordan may pan out and maybe one of the corners will but at this point it would be hard to not call this draft a complete failure. This team was 2 impact rookies away from being a playoff team.
I don't blame Ireland for not taking an OL with the 1st round pick. But EVERYONE knew that OL was our biggest need and HAD to be addressed. Instead we trade 2 picks for 1 defensive players and spend 2 out of the next 3 on defensive players. The one OL we took doesn't seem to be a fit for the position he practices at. -
You have to remember too that this was Jordan's 3rd year on defense. The guy is just now scratching the surface of his potential. Richardson right now is the better player but Jordan could end up being the better player overall.
-
Sorry but got to call it like it is
Richardson was ranked 5th in 3-4 DEs according to pro football focus and the only defender in the whole NFL that had a better rank against the rush was JJ Watt and that's saying something. He is only going to get better and he did score a rushing TD in week 17
You have the words freak of nature mixed up because one guy made an impact on his team and the other guy was having trouble seeing the field -

Lol...when Dion Jordan is tearing it up in 2014...and makes the Pro Bowl..yep..you heard it...I want to hear again how it was a mistake.

Sheldon and Kiko would have faced the same issue that Jordan did. Those guys were every down guys, we have people better than them at those starting spots and we rotate our defensive line a lot. Jordon could have gone to either of those teams and probably excelled then the thread would be "Why didn't we pick Dion Jordan?".

If he plays over 500 snaps next year, gets double digit sacks and makes a massive impact will everyone shut up?
Jeff Ireland's biggest mistake? Look at the offensive line, Ellerbe, the running back situation. Dion Jordan is about 20th on the list and he's played one damn year. -
Productive in their rookie years... yes. But I'm not convinced their future as players looks brighter than Dion's.MrClean likes this. -
