@JamesWalkerNFL: Via @SandoESPN, interesting Tannehill quote from anonymous DC: “He is a manager of the game, a guy where if everything is right, he is OK."
@JamesWalkerNFL: [Cont. on QB Ryan Tannehill] "We didn't fear him. I don't think he has the strongest arm, the best release.” #Dolphins
There are certainly parts of his game he needs to improve upon, but saying Tannehill doesn't have the strongest arm is basically saying he doesn't have one, which is just wrong. And to call him a game manager is even more ridiculous. We had zero running game and an awful offensive line. He was our offense!
"Manager of the game" Lollllllll
Give 'em hell, Tannehill!

When the O-line plays well, Tannehill can function well. When the receivers put in great effort he has a good game. What Tannehill doesn't often do is put the team on his back when everything around him is suckitude and pull them up to a high level.
The arm thing, honestly, I think the guy is trying to say Tannehill doesn;t scare anyone deep. The truth is, he has a lot of zip on his outs and mid-range throws... but not a feared deep cannon. That's more a function of his timing on deep balls, imo, than his arm strength though. So the guy is wrong about his arm strength but right that Tannehill doesn;t scare you deep.Serpico Jones, Pandarilla, finyank13 and 4 others like this. -

He wasn't saying Tannehill has a weak arm. He was talking about weapons at a quarterback's disposal that can scare a defensive coordinator or defense in general. A guy with a hose for an arm that can whip it anywhere at the flick of a wrist is scary to a defensive coordinator, as is a guy that has an ultra quick release. This coordinator is just saying that neither aspect for Tannehill is outstanding and so he wasn't a guy they really feared hurting them with his weapons.
And he's probably right. Tannehill needs to learn to do that more. The easiest way for him to do that is to use his athleticism.MonstBlitz, Serpico Jones, Pandarilla and 8 others like this. -

By the way I'm thinking the defensive coordinator was probably Matt Patricia.

Long term, maybe it helps him read progressions. But when it gets him pounded into the earth getting hit, ruining his timing and surely shaking some confidence in himself and also leading to more losing, I think it could also harm his development. Also.. we come back to the fact that it's one less thing for opposing DC's to worry about, which leads to more losses.
Really have to question Philbin and Sherman's approach on that one.
Wonder what Lazor's approach will be to that... and if Philbin will water down any offensive chutzpah he brings in.rafael likes this. -

I don't find anything wrong with the assessment of Tannehill by this DC. The fact is that while Tannehill has played effectively in several games. He also has failed to produce on a consistent enough basis to be considered anything more than a mediocre NFL QB during his first two years in the NFL.
He certainly doesn't have very good pocket awareness and he hasn't shown that he throws an accurate deep ball. He also is not a QB who seems to be able to put the team on his back and win games in the fourth quarter. This is what separates the top tier QB's in the NFL from the very average QB's in the league.
Perhaps Tannehill can take his game to a higher level this coming season. If he can and the Dolphins make the playoffs, there will be many more people who see him as a quality QB in the NFL. It all comes down to wins and losses when looking at how effective a QB is in the NFL. So far Tannehill has led this team to a 15-17 record. The reality is that even if Matt Moore had been the starting QB the past two years, the Dolphins would have probably had as many wins as they had with Tannehill at QB.
Top tier NFL QB's are consistently effective week after week. While Tannehill played well against the Colts, the Patriots in their second game and a few other teams in 2013. He also played terrible against the Bills twice, the Jets, and Tampa Bay. Three of the worst teams in the NFL in 2013.
To me, Tannehill needs to show in 2014 that he is the right QB for the long haul with the Dolphins or else the GM next year needs to draft a QB in the first round of the 2015 draft. It is playoffs or bust for both Tannehill and Philbin in 2014. All the top young QB's in the NFL have already shown that they can lead their team to the playoffs. Now the pressure is on Tannehill to prove he deserves to be a starting QB in the NFL.DPlus47 likes this. -

Was it Ray Horton? Cause he sure coaches like he doesn't fear Tannehill.

To me, he is saying Tannehill has been largely average, thus "if everything is right"
I disagree with that and agree on some portions of it. His deep ball does not cause DC's to overly plan to stop him from making those plays from happening.
So in some ways we still are a sort of dink and dunk 25-35 yd "big" play offense, max, some of that is on Tannehill, some on protections, some on talent on the roster.
That said, still am quite happy to have THill at Qb as his play has improved as each season rolled alongDOLPHAN1 and Colorado Dolfan like this. -
My issue was mostly with the "manager of the game" statement. Tannehill won us games last year. We had no running game. You can't say a team that had such a non- existent running game had a game-managing QB.

Listen, being called a game manager would be a compliment if that's what I felt Tannehills game deserved, (think Alex smith, Chad Pennington)which I don't , however, even a good game manager incorporates critical third down runs as part of his game manager repertoire, Tannehill has not.
All that being said, I will say that overall he's been dealt a below average set of skillset players and really below average oline for his two years in the league.
No more listening to coaches telling him what to do when their not out there under the heat, time to play your own game within the confines of the scheme. -
The Dolphins averaged just 10.5 points per game last season against Pettine’s defenses... Tannehill threw for 276 combined yards and was sacked 9 times against Buffalo last season. His worst games were against the Saints and the Bills twice. -

Anonymous DC has no balls, therefore is a d-bag.
Gutless f***. -
It would be hilarious if it was Matt Patricia seeing as how Tannehill torched his defense last December.

Until he can consistently hit deep plays that burn defenses, he will be a good, not great Qb.
Cannot wait to **** the Jills up this yr, even competent offensive line play will allow that to happen. I cannot overstate how often the 2013 offensive line simply did not know their assignments, just plain were not physical enough, or simply were asked to do things they had no prayer of accomplishing.
McKinnie and Clabo had -0- prayer of geting out to block a Cb on a screen, JJerry was not physical at all, and we had a carousel at LG -

A lot of defensive coordinators gambled that Tannehill couldn't beat them with his arm and more often than not that gamble payed off. This is one of the reasons I'm predicting a huge year for Tannehill however; he wasn't spraying it all over the place on the deep balls, his line was generally good but the distance was off, this is probably correctable, and whether by just luck or improvement I think the big plays will come and even when we're beating teams with the deep ball I think a lot of defensive coordinators won't believe what they are seeing on tape and will continue to dare Tannehill to beat them with his arm, leading to even more huge games for him. As an example we could have decimated the Panthers with the deep ball, effectively ending that game even before the half, but even if we had I doubt any defensive coordinators would have adjusted their game plan very much based off one game.

I aint even mad... Certainly there have been flashes of greatness with Tannehill. And that's highly encouraging given the roster turmoil (no weapons/OK oline in year 1 and OK weapons/no oline in year 2) and coaching issues in his first two seasons. However, no one can deny the inconsistency from one week to the next. And I'm not saying it's all his fault. But I won't bad mouth and argue with a DC for believing Tannehill isn't a franchise QB at this stage.
p.s.
I'm guessing whoever said it likely played multiple "young QB's" in 2014 and were asked about each one individually. Patriots DC makes sense (Tannehill x2, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Geno Smith x2, and Andy Dalton). Ryan played well against NE late in the year, but collapsed badly in their first meeting after Miami couldn't maintain a big lead (no thanks to the refs with phantom PI calls and Vernon "batting the ball"). Tannehill also got smacked up twice by NE as a rookie. Makes sense it was him, if anyone. -
I am not mad because he isn't man enough to stand by his words with his name.
-
The deep ball is the least of my concerns. -
Here's the problem I have with these quotes. Like others have said, if you are going to sling mud put your name behind it. But more importantly both quotes are just cliches that you expect to hear a caller make to a radio talk show.
