I know a lot of people here have been clamoring for Marquess Wilson. I don't think the drafting of a receiver would automatically mean trouble for Davone Bess.

 

Glad they're doing their homework on these guys, especially Marquess Wilson. They're good players.

 

I know I'm obviously a huge Austin fan first and foremost but I'd be ecstatic to see us draft Patterson to groom opposite Wallace and transition Hartline to the slot as Patterson settles into the position.

Jftr..Wilson displayed the most punkish disrespectful behavior I've seen from a player on a football field..it was disgusting...there is a reason why the dude has dropped like a bad habit, just like I thought he would.

Yet, you support the idea of not only drafting a dope smoking, potential drug dealer that openly admits he can't stay out of trouble unless he has someone to baby sit him, but spending a relatively high pick on the guy.

IMO, Omar Kelly's article on what Joe Philbin is looking for in a player pretty much means there is a zero percent chance that either Wilson or Mathieu are Miami Dolphins come the end of April.

 

Irelands comments today did nothing to diffuse the rabid speculation on the boards that he might go WR at 12.

I guess Marquess Wilson needed to have an ESPN segment or two done on him where he could shed some crocodile tears and talk about how many lessons he's learned. Then that would make everything OK.

 

I wonder if the difference was Wilson toiling for unheralded Washington State out on the high plains of Eastern Washington, sort of out of the limelight of major sports media...as opposed to Mathieu playing for one of the most high profile major college football programs?

 

That and the fact that Mathieu at one point was a Heisman finalist.

You know how many professional athletes there are that at one point decided to quit their program and transfer to another one?

 

Not so much, one was an impact player in the toughest conference in the semi pro league, the other was a Wr who put up numbers and they are not that hard to find.

Still, there is -0- chance imo, that either wind up on Philbin's roster..which imo is a mistake, a coach who won't take chances on players with talent is a limited coach who lacks a broad skillset in motivating players imo.

Interesting that Greg Cosell rates Barkley as a 4th rd talent.

 

Because he was one their best players, Leach singled him out and made an example out of him. There is no call for that. Leach is just a jerk with a massive ego. A good coach treats all the players equally.

 

1. From what we've heard about Philbin, I agree there is about a 0% chance either Mathieu or Wilson gets drafted by Miami.
2. That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. IMO, Barkley is the best QB in this draft without a doubt.

 

I really doubt the Dolphins are going to grab either Marquess Wilson or Tyrann Mathieu. Joe Philbin seems like he's taking a greater hand in the personnel doings (he's literally stated this, I'm not just pulling it out of thin air), and so you could see the issue of character go from like a 7 in importance to like a 9.

 

I know it's an expression but I have to think you're way over reacting to his Barkley ranking. It's not as if he predicted Barkley would go in the 4th round, just that he has him rated in that range. Barkley's rankings have been all over the map. He may be the best QB (I don't agree) in this draft but that's like arguing over who's the skinniest kid at fat camp. If he made that comment last year about Luck it would be "the most ridiculous statement" I've ever heard

 

It's a pretty ridiculous statement. You say Barkley's grades are all over the map but that's not really true. Many believe Matt Barkley is worth a 1st round pick and the ones that don't pretty much think he's worth a 2nd round pick.

A better comparison would be if someone a year ago was saying that Ryan Tannehill is worth only a 4th round pick. That year pretty clearly you had some people who thought Tannehill worth a 1st round pick, and some people saying he's really a 2nd round pick that will get pushed into the 1st round based on needs and reaching.

 

I still disagree and i'm not sure where you're going with the Tannehill comparison? If someone said last year that Luck was a 4th round pick that would be a ridiculous statement. He was widely considered to be the best QB in the draft and possibly the best QB prospect in a decade. Barkley has draft grades of top of the 1st to anywhere in the 2nd. I think that's a pretty big difference when you're talking a possible top 10 pick. There's no consensus on Barkley. Even his pro day drew mixed reviews.

I personally think he's a second rounder but it's not like we're talking about a can't miss prospect that someone is saying is going undrafted. Fair, but taking Wilson in the 5th with our comp pick, is a low risk high reward pick. Your really not hedging a successful draft on if he makes the team with that pick, but if he keeps in line could be a steal and make u look like a genius.

 

You don't have to sell me on it. I've been a huge fan of Wilson's for over a year. At one point I had him heading into 2013 as the top wide receiver for the 2013 NFL Draft.

I'm just saying...chances are pretty slim.

 

I've heard the Dolphins name mentioned with Kelce too. Wouldn't you have to throw him into the group of head cases the fins are looking at, and also outside of Philbin's style?

 

I wasnt there so I dont know but I can tell you I deal with people all the time. I find it odd that Wilson was the only guy that got singled out and the only guy to quit. You know I coach baseball…as a coach I find it hard to believe that anyone would make a decision to intentionally screw with the one guy that is going to lead success. There is a reason Leach hammered him (if he did) and Wilson's reaction to it wasnt to say "hey, I am going to work my way out of this dog house.". it wasnt "hey,, this is going to make me a stronger person down the line". No, Wilson's reaction was this, I cant handle this and F my team mates I quit. Frankly, the guy is a loser.

 

There is no reward for bringing a loser to your team… and lets make no bones about it, that is what Wilson is. AND you cant bring a cancer like that to a young team that is trying to learn how to win as the Dolphins are. I could see him going to a team like the Pats and doing OK because the have the veterans in place to keep him in check. THe Dolphins dont...

I guess what we're really debating is our own personal opinion of what the phrase "ridiculous statement" means. To me it's the absolute extreme ie: my Andrew Luck example. His Barkley comment to me was just dumb and his lazy way of saying he's not a Barkley fan. In the end, who cares? We know Barkley is more than likely going round one. This is a QB starved league and he's one of the top 2 in the draft.

 

Not necessarily. That one will depend on the interviews. Kelce's issue, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, had to do with anger and a momentary loss of control. A big fight broke out, I think someone's said that Kelce went all "The U" on someone and started swinging his helmet trying to bash heads or something like that.

That's a momentary loss of control and doesn't necessarily make someone a bad person or bad in Joe Philbin's eyes. He could still very well be a guy that just shuts his mouth and shows up to work.

 

I read it, I think it was DJ that had a little bit of a counter to it. I know Wilson was not the only problem.. I know Leach was part of the problem. The truth really lays somewhere in the middle as with most stories. having said that, all Wilson had to do was endure for a couple of months… instead he took the cowards way out. I know there are some on this board that are willing to over look that BUT personally I cant. I would rather draft an LP in the 1st round then bring Wilson anywhere near my team.

 

It happens in football all the time. Bill Parcells is notorious for it. When he arrives (usually to a piss poor team) he picks out the biggest personality on the team, the biggest leader, and he targets him. He's going to wrestle that guy into absolute submission, or he's going to kick him off the team, or both. That's exactly what happened with Jason Taylor in 2008.

That's all too common a practice in football. You find the most talented player and you ride his *** until he's your lap dog, and that's how you get your locker room in line. Mike Leach took over a poorly led team. I'm sure he felt what he was doing was in the best interests of the team.

You're still ignoring the fact that college football players "quit" their teams all the damn time. But they usually do it by transferring. Wilson just skipped that step because he was already draft eligible and there wouldn't have been any point in it.

 

Isn't the issues with Wilson more of of he said she said thing with Mike Leach and that's why he left the team? That seems like something that you could decipher in interviews as well, or what was his deal?
