Last night on the news, Gov. Arnold said this needs to get fixed once and for all. The Democrats say we don't need anyone threatening us. The state is controlled by the democrats. Gov. Arnold said the state will write IOU's on July 28th I believe he said. He also said the will not borrow any money to solve the problem in the short term. There are people talking about the state going bankrupt as well. The Fed has been paying the states unemployment benefits from Jan or February of this year, because the state is broke. The state could default on it's bonds. This will be very interesting to see what happens.

california is tough right now. the housing market (though has made a slight increase in the last 6 months) is in the pits compared to what it was a few years ago. tons of my friends are getting laid off left and right. my hours have gotten cut down about 40% but it's so bad that i'm basically better off trying to ride it out unless i want to move to silicon valley. my mom (an optometrist) had her hours cut in half. my stepfather got transfered to socal. it's really bad

Can you believe the friggin democrats? This really is why, I can never ever get behind that party. how can you, in a time of such dire straits not think about decreasing spending?
While we're in distress what is our democratic controlled govt. doing?

Feel bad for the folks out in California. They've got to get back to reality out there and quit voting for every feel good program that comes along.

Crime is about to skyrocket there. I was planning a trip to LA/Vegas and that has been cut down to only Vegas.

Was listening to some noon time NPR show yesterday and they were talking about this. The host was speaking with some writer from the Sacramento Bee. The host came from the position that the public just couldn't have understood what they were doing. She kept bringing up "but healthy summer meals for school age children will be cut!!" - "home health aides for the elderly will be cut!! - - these people just can't understand what they're doing!" [I'm paraphrasing there]. She was shocked with the writer told her that, "well, right now there's a pretty low opinion of the government's ability to do anything efficiently - too much waste is the general belief".
I just shake my head at this do-good attitude. They don't understand that people are tired of paying for all this stuff that government doesn't have any business taking care of.Stitches likes this. -

California unemployment rate for last month jumped a half percent, and now stands at 11.5%:pity:gafinfan likes this. -
That is the crux of the matter.California is always leading the way in social experiments .Like Hollywood movies some work out ,and some that are based on Wizard of Oz mentality become costly busts. The victim are the voters pocketbooks.
When you make bad decisions in a business you go broke .California needs to terminate the bad decisions.Voters need to elect better politicians .
Arnold did not create the mess .Its obvious that spending has to be cut and californians need to tighten their belts .Raising taxes will only aggravate the situation .:pity:azfinfanmang likes this. -

California has lost 885,000 jobs since May 2008, when the unemployment rate was 6.8 percent. -
throw out a couple million illegals and there would be a couple million jobs, keep them out and the jobs would become better paying.

It's hard for me to feel very sorry for California as a whole.
It's like feeling sorry for someone who disabled himself when driving drunk for the umpteenth time. Or the adult fooling around with a gun and accidentally shooting himself.
That being said, my state, per capita, is more in debt than California. Had our governor only increased spending by 20% instead of 33% during her first term then we'd still be in the black.
Are there any states with fiscally conservative governments that are really hurting at the moment? I've heard that Texas, for example, created more new jobs that the other 49 states combined. What can that be attributed to? -
-
-
Well lets start with the fact that raising taxes is almost impossible there thanks to a Proposition that states that you need 2/3s vote to do so. So basically Californians want their cake and but dont want to pay for it.
-
California Democrats want their cake. FinSane. :)
They weren't smart enough to realize that sooner or later someone has to pay for all this feel good stuff they vote for. If we can get a constitutional amendment saying any programs in the future can only be implemented up to the extent there is funding, I'd be cool with that.FinSane likes this. -
Personally I dont have a problem paying taxes as long as I get adequate services in return. The problem with Californians is they want all these good intentioned programs and laws but didnt want to pay for them. The only way California can get moving forward again is putting in place a "pay as you go" system. In the meantime, they may have to slash subsidies, government jobs, and programs to get there.
-
I wonder if those who were hurting before the recession feel better now that more of us are hurting? If so, then apparently "feel good" politics work ... for some. In all honesty, does the recession affect people "on the dole"? Does the recession change the amount of their subsidies at all? It could be that they feel richer because, if their incomes haven't diminished at all, compared to the rest of us who have lost income, they are. -
-
-
No seriously though. I don't want to say what the problem is but it's blatantly obvious. It could be fixed but people's feelings would certainly be hurt.
