Listening to Detroit Radio here and they are commenting on a report from Florio (I don't have a link handy) that our interest in trading for the Lions 3rd overall without giving up our 5 is legit.
Why? To offer 3 and 5 (at least) to Cinci to secure Burrow.
Bob Quinn (Lions GM) is reportedly asking for double the value of #3 if it means trading outside the top 10. This means likely something akin to 18, 26, 39, 70 and a 1 and 2 from next year. Thats just for 3rd, no word on what, if any, additional assets the Bengals would demand.
Thoughts?
Personally, no way. Burrow had a phenomenal year, but an older guy one year wonder worth all of that? Ugh. That's a make or break pick for Grier. If Burrow doesn't become elite within a year or two, it's likely a failure and reset without him as GM. Ballsy... Maybe too much so.

That's the big question, isn't it? I am not qualified to answer, maybe some are and can chime in, but is Burrow worth trading the farm over? Because that is what it looks like we are doing. Part of me is thinking well done. The other is wondering how in the hell are we going to protect him?

If you do it, Burrow better be the next Marino or you get run out of town for trading good players for picks to only use them on one player who’s a bust.

I think that's a ridiculous idea since our 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the next two seasons would be- Joe Burrow. That's 8 picks for a guy who had one solid college season...I'm guessing we could have any quarterback in the league for that. Wilson, Brees, Rodgers...heck, Tampa would probably trade us Brady and Gronk for eight 1st/2nd round picks.
I really like Joe Burrow and would love to sign him, but if this is the deal then I am 100% opposed. This trade would set us back years even if Burrow is the next Marino or Manning. This is not a stunner. It is literally Grier's job to try his absolute best to get Burrow.
How could he have this many picks and say, "I didn't even try to get Burrow?"
Seriously, how mad would you be if Burrow is lighting things up 5 years from now, and you found out Grier didn't even attempt to move up to get him.
He has to try. I don't think that this gets done, but he has to try. -
I don't believe Cinci is giving up the #1 pick. They need a QB like Indy needed Luck and they're picking Burrow IMO.

Reminds me of when Ditka traded all of his draft picks for Ricky Williams. When that didn't work out he started a new career selling pencils on the street corner and, rightfully so. -

I agree the price is too high. Especially, if you consider the difference between that and what Tua, a LT at #18, etc. could give us. That said, we know how things are. It's just like when a guy signs a contract. At first, there is a lot of grumbling, but when the final numbers come out, then people start to settle down. I hope if we do this, we don't give up too much, and then when it is all said and done we realize things will be ok.KeyFin likes this.

I know I sound like a broken record, but before we even think about a quarterback, we need to build a team that's ready for a quarterback.
Someone mentioned earlier that if we drafted burrow, we would need 3 years to build a team around him. We already tried that...with Tannehill...and that failed epically -

Think I figured out what's going on.
Grier's just getting a pulse. He's talking to Detroit and NY and getting asking prices for the move up. No other team has the draft capital that we do or is as close as we are to both picks. So, if both teams are asking for a king's ransom and he knows if they wouldn't do it, then it's likely no one else will either.
The pick is Tua and they're just making sure he's gonna be there at #5 so they don't have to move up to get him.texanphinatic likes this. -
By all accounts, the interest is Burrow is absolutely legit - the staff love him, Ross loves him, they want him. It's just a matter of if they can get the Bengals to part with him for a price that Miami is willing to pay. We have reportedly been after Burrow pretty much since the beginning of the offseason, so unlike the ridiculous "trade up to 3 to select Thomas" rumor, this one has legs and airs of legitimacy to it.
If we really want Burrow no matter the cost, we can get him. Throw our entire 2020/2021 drafts at them and that pick is ours. Now, that's obviously insane and absurd, but it demonstrates the point. The only question is what Ross, Grier and Flores consider an acceptable price and whether that's enough to make the Bengals pass the hometown hero.
The potential byproduct though, is IF all the interest in Burrow, this entire offseason, has been a long-game smokescreen for another QB. If we can convince the rest of the league that Burrow is the guy we really want, and that Tua/Herbert/Love hold no interest to us in the top 10 (when really 1 or more DOES) then teams may be reticent to leapfrog us. -

There comes a point when the amount of compensation given to get a player puts a corresponding amount of pressure on him that is unmanageable and is counterproductive to his development. Trading the farm for a guy may work on paper, but there is the player's emotional response to that to consider, since we're dealing with humans and not machines.

If Burrow is forcing his way out of Cincy, then they could grab him at #1 and wait for Miami to get Tua/Herbert and make a trade then. Tua plus #18, #39 and #70 for example. A decent haul for the Bengals for a player that was forcing their hand anyway.
Without pressure from Burrow, there is no realistic way a trade happens. -
