... more important than anything else in 2013 is not making the playoffs but surviving the season???
"The Dolphins essentially have three options: Change their personnel, change their scheme or simply play better.
Philbin all but ruled out the first solution Monday. And if they start max protecting with two tight ends, that would take Brandon Gibson, one of the team’s best offensive players, off the field.
That leaves only one way to fix that problem: Have the five guys on the line do their job better.
“He’s the No. 1 priority for us as linemen,” Jerry said. “We have to protect him better. We have to do a better job to help Tanny out.”
If not, they could end up with a broken quarterback, either mentally or physically. It’s not uncommon for quarterbacks who get bombarded with pressure to eventually start seeing ghosts. Tannehill said that hasn’t happened to him up to this point.
“I really don’t feel a mental toll,” Tannehill said. “Obviously, we have an issue. It’s been well-documented.
“We talked about it a lot inside the building,” he added. “It’s something we’re going to continue to work and use this bye week to lock in some ways, screens, quick game, moving the pocket. We’ll use this time to really do that, move forward and cut down those numbers.”

... what to do?

yes, it is a rhetorical question. having said that, it begs to be answered & addressed. if RT is a sacked another 3 or 4 times against Buffalo, it may be time to consider Moore for the start... not like Moore is chopped-liver. however tough as Tannehilll appears to be, no one can survive being sacked 77 times in a season, especially an inexperienced (developing) qb.
in my mind 77 sacks & the potential loss of a franchise-in-the making QB makes absolutely no sense. don't want to jump the gun on this one, but it has become obvious to me that we (Philbin) may need to bridle (his) ambitions for 2013 to survive & thrive in 2014.Bpk likes this. -
philbin saying they won't change personnel doesn't mean they aren't. as others have said, it's more likely he wanted to discuss that with his fellow coaches abd players before the media
-
Perhaps he could text Martin and Clabo this astonishing observation.
BTW, before last game, Philbin said the same damn thing.

the conversation would be:
"Matt, this is a career opportunity, make it work."
Moore is a starter sitting on the bench. he's turned things around before... he is paid to play football & would welcome the opportunity to showcase his abilities.
just another unsofiscated, pedestrian observation but Garner (at least) should be given a shot at right tackle or guard in the line-up. this group has had 4 games to get it together, which is enough time to gel & show results.
it's obvious to me that there is either a chemistry, coaching or talent deficit that must be addressed.. if there is no obvious turn around in game six, considering Moore is an option in my book, destroying Tannehill is not. -
Philbin also said Miami didn't need a number#1 wide receiver, but they sure paid a lot of money to Wallace to be a #2 or #3. I hope he's not serious if Claybo keeps playing up to his high standard. It almost seems like some of our offensive linemen are allergic to blocking.

or the destruction of a first round draft choice that has already demonstrated to be of franchise quality?
Moore get's my vote for the execution & I'm sure he would welcome the opportunity. sometimes you have to take a step backward to move two steps forward. let's see what they come up with in the bye week.
game six will be the crucible. I'm sure the coaching cadre is aware of the situation & will govern themselves accordingly... just don't be surprised if it happens -
-
personally, I'd like to coax Pennington out of retirement & into the coaching-cadre for Miami.
Moore is more than competent if called upon to start.
it's taken too long to acquire a franchise QB to allow him to self-destruct in hopes of play-off bragging rights.
maybe I've got it all wrong, but I don't think so...
let's see if Philbin doesn't pull a rabbit out of his hat during the bye. we have two weeks. if the sacks continue at this rate, I think he has to consider pulling Tannehill for the future of the franchise. -
MMoore is fine as starter, not for us, THill is the guy and they will just have to do things better.
It is one of my Dictums that Staffs, and GM's, are far far to cautious when it comes to both player moves and benching players, I think they should make a move especially at RG as it is low hanging fruit.
Staffs on the other hand, will happily march out a Marc Colombo no matter how crappy he is playing b/c they buy in to that player, it's foolish, it is how the league works -

I think Tannehill has the makeup to not let it affect his mentals, in fact, I actually go in the direction that if you have someone who has a strong mentality, and memory loss is part of their repertoire, it might actually be the best thing dealing and learning with great chaos in the pocket from the get and have your starting point start there ya know, fu&$ teaching someone while there all happy and chillin back there, I say fu&$ with his soul like ether, then that little extra time he hopefully gets once we add more talent to protect, will seem like infinity. -
There's far more evidence that David Carr ruined David Carr. Just another strong armed QB without the mental capability to play the position.gafinfan likes this. -
hubris...
you asked a question, you got an answer
now, you list the developing QB's that have recovered from 77 sacks to go on to excel in the NFL -
It was also interesting when Rich Gannon said Philbin had to stop last Friday's practice because it was going horribly and he spent ten minutes ripping the team. These guys need to get their act together.
-
It's pretty tough to definitively show that a quarterback was "broken." How does one prove that their failure wasn't just because of lack of ability?

fellow dolfanfan Clark Kent:
John Elway is the most sacked NFL quarterback of all time, at 516 sacks, followed by Dave Krieg with 494 and Randall Cunningham with 484.
Favre was another great QB with an inordinate amount of career sacks, but like Cunningham was extremely mobile.
help me out on this one, I don't see any other franchise quarterbacks sacked over 70 times as a rookie, only Cunningham.
Elway is probably the ultimate success story & a NFL legend. he was sacked his first year 23 times & in his second year 28 times.
Cunningham would seem to fit the conversation, he was sacked 72 times in his second year in the NFL. having said that, he was the exception not the rule & not a pocket QB. i.e. he was a scrambler & running threat from day one.
so, I gave you one example & you gave me another. the reality is that it is a rarity for a young QB to survive & thrive after seventy (plus) sacks in year two of a career in the NFL.
I am no pundit, I am not the coach of the team, only an ardent fan. however, after assisting/watching every game the Dolphins have ever played since day one of the franchise, I understand the importance of a franchise QB to our team & how difficult it is to find one. -
Paul 13 (about breaking)
like most of us on the board, I played some football & coached at the HS level...
however, most of my experience has been in boxing & soccer. have also had some experience in working with attack/guard dogs (schutzhund).
in my limited experience, you never consistently over-match or brutalize an animal or athlete early on in his training... you carefully bring them along at their pace so as not to break their spirit or physically damage them.
maybe I'm wrong in the case of RT. perhaps, this principle doesn't apply to NFL QB's. I could be just overly concerned, but I don't think so.
lots of speculation in my comments & it becomes mute if game six is a fix. we shall see. if the brutalization of our developing franchise QB continues, the subject may not only be relevant but be our first & most immediate concern in 2013. would not be too quick to rule this out ... -
however
what if the trade doesn't fix the situation? what if the problem is coaching not talent?
at least with Moore, you know you have a chance of not totally trashing the season...
I'm sure the coaching cadre & front office are on top of it. -

I got the joke... very clever. the levity is appreciated. -
Sheeesh! I never knew that Tannehill was Beaked, that must have been painful, will he miss any playing time from it? First the offensive line is letting him get mauled and now he is Beaked, he is having a rough second year isn't he?
-
Tannehill looked like he had been seriously beaked in his last post-game interview... looked like a deer caught in the headlights. the pounding may have already started to take its toll. looking for the fix in six. hate to see the kid reduced to road-kill. the birds of misfortune are already circling. there has been only one Randal Cunningham to date in the NFL. we're asking a lot of our franchise QB in-the-making.

Also for a guy "ruined" by sacks, Carr still managed to spend a hell of a long time in the NFL. If it were sacks that ruined him, and not just him not quite being good enough to be a starter, then he'd have not continually made rosters after his time in Houston. Also, if Carr was "ruined" his rookie year by all the sacks, why did he continue to get better the next two years (and then posts two years much better than his rookie year after that)?
