Ireland was a scape goat.

Did the team have some holes - sure. Who knows what we could have accomplished with a good coach. But since we have regressed IMO. Only now we are headed down with "Queasy" possibly being extended and now our GM is a guy from Tampa, who everyone knew got passed over by his own team when they searched for a GM. Now we are slowly being saddled by Jets rejects with most likely more on the way. We have issues with the cap and the power struggle with Aponte kissing up and supposedly being a "CAP GURU". Yea right - look where we are at.

IMO firing Ireland at that time was a bad move. The core of this team is All Jeff Ireland and I think we proved this year that we have a lot of talent on this team. Ireland had no choice but to bow out. The writing was on the wall. The current powers to be aligned themselves and it was all on Jeff's head. Right or wrong we are where we are - no further along then the day he left.

Eventually, Philbins writing will come due. Lets just hope it's sooner rather then later.

Ireland found a few decent players but couldn't get playmakers to save his life. He also had a terrible reputation around the league and possessed horrible people skills. You don't want a GM who's a deterrent to attracting quality players and coaches to this team. IMO, Hickey has been an upgrade thus far.

 

The problem as I see it was that Ireland was drafting (sometimes poorly) for a power-run offense and a 34 defense.

When we got Brian Daboll, we started having personnel issues. That became more apparent when Philbin/Sherman took over the offense. At the same time, Coyle came in and we transitioned to a 43. Those changes on both sides of the ball meant that many of the picks that had been solid were now questionable and that the pieces which had failed were then glaring holes.

Nobody seems to remember how bad Chad Henne was either. If he had worked out, things might have gone a lot differently.


We should have fired Ireland with Sparano or kept them both. Just as now, we are faced with the same challenge of committing to our offensive and defensive schemes before making critical draft selections and free agent signings that will impact the next several years of the franchise.

If you want to fire Philbin, Coyle, Hickey and Lazor (and possibly replace Tannehill) before initiating a restructure under Tannenbaum, that's fine. If you want to stick with the pieces that demonstrate some upside (i.e. Lazor, Hickey and Tannehill) then you should be committing to the current staff for another couple seasons.

What surely isn't going to work is firing and replacing one piece at a time while having almost everyone functioning with the pressure of being fired the very next year.

 

Yep. Ireland kept adding 3-4 pieces, he and Philbin never saw eye to eye on that, among other things. For that reason alone it was probably a good idea to move on but he was never as bad as he was made out to be.

For evidence just compare his acquisitions to other GMs or look at how Philbin is being vilified for not teaching the playoffs ONE YEAR after Irish's dismissal. Surely it takes more than one season to remove the stain of six seasons of poor personnel management, no?

 

He may not have been as bad as others have said he was, but he still couldn't put a team together. Most of the players he picked were blue collar guys with limited ceilings and everyone else was garbage. How many Pro Bowlers did we produce during his time here? Wake has been the only consistent Pro Bowler we've had since. We lacked playmakers on both sides of the ball during his tenure and that's what separates mediocre teams like ours from prennial playoff teams.

Ask yourself this: if he was such a good GM, wouldn't he be with another team in some sort of capacity by now? Wouldn't he be on team's lists for their GM search? He's on no one's radar these days for a reason.

The 08-11 teams were not great but they very much playoff caliber outside of QB imo.

I agree Henne was garbage, but we were severely lacking in key areas year after year under his tenure. Sure he found a few good players (many of whom are no longer on the team), but every year it seemed he was playing catch up and making up for every failed pick. There was always a unit that needed addressing and when he finally got around to addressing it, another unit would fail. He biggest miscue was passing on playmakers for average players while failing to shore up our o-line.

 

You can't be playoff caliber if you don't make the playoffs with that group, that's just silly to categorize a team as playoff caliber when they can't even get there and never been there.

If Philbin & Coyle didn't ditch pieces of this defense [Dansby, Vontae, Sean Smith, Soliai] and actually knew how to coach, Miami would currently have one of the league's best defenses that would only need a new piece here or there to compliment the aforementioned plus Wake, Olivier Vernon, Reshad Jones, Jelani, Jenkins, Dion Jordan, Odrick, and Starks. The NFL's #6 scoring D was working just fine as it was in 2011 and didn't need parts sold off or the scheme scrapped over the next few years as if it were problematic. If that #6 D had Vontae & Sean playing at their current level, plus Jenkins, Jordan, and Vernon infused into it, it's probably a top 3 D at the moment.

Offensively- Tannehill, Lamar Miller, Charles Clay, and Mike Wallace have been integral to seeing our points increase to 24.2 per game.

Ireland might not have been Super Bowl material GM, but he sure as hell wasn't this bottom of the barrel nonsense that you attempt to vilify him as. Pick a new hobby already dude/dudette.

 

I didn't like Ireland even a little bit but comparing him to Millen is a bit of a stretch.

 

It doesnt matter what was said then before his roster had a chance to mature. Now that it has had a chance to mature [including players that were on it that are no longer here], those Matt Millen references look pretty stupid.

 

I can't believe I'm about to write this but...Ireland didn't do a bad job, in hindsight he was actually pretty good. Ireland's 2013 draft was awful but I think that was mostly a function of the dysfunction going on behind the scenes and being forced to deal with a coach that he didn't want in the first place.

 

saying the dysfunction was responsible for the bad 2013 draft is a cop out. that's one of his primary responsibilities as GM, if he can't rise above the political nonsense and do his job, then he shouldn't be GM.

Good to see Jeffrey still has his defenders on this board. It's amazing to me to see a guy who missed on so many picks, especially in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and held the GM job during some of this franchises most embarrassing debacles still is defended. He was an awful GM and a terrible human being. I will keep his pasty white legs in my sig forever as a brutal reminder of the devastation he caused this franchise.

I'm not here to stage a huge defense of Philbin, but I'll give him a big edge over Ireland. At least under Joe Philbin's tenure, this team has developed a young potential franchise QB. That's a position Ireland addressed about 4 years too late. But Miami fans know all too well how terrible Ireland was at addressing glaring holes in the roster.

Ireland was never bad at evaluating talent. In fact, he's quite good. His problem was that he didn't understand team building. He had the short view of talent and completely neglected the long view of putting as complete a team as possible on the field.

We'd be in amazing shape if Ireland was the GM right now and Tannebaum came in and controlled things and just let Ireland run player acquisitions with Tannebaum telling him, "get me a tackle, a LB, a guard.", and Ireland used the draft and FA to do that.

FTR, he did consult with Seattle last year.

 

To clarify, a pre-draft consultant, and he did not spend a full month in that role with the Seahawks declining to offer him any more work post whatever it was they had him doing.
