May the coaching staff have the intelligence to sit him down for the rest of the season.

After edit: Unless you meant the rest of the regular season (meaning the Pats game this week)? If you mean the playoffs too? Well, that depends on how well he is doing. Tanny seems to be a bit of a freak of nature with all the hits he has taken and being able to recover quickly. He might be ready after a month, but if we could get the #5 seed I'd sit him for the Texans game. -

I'm happy his injury isn't serious. But I'd rather roll into the playoffs with MM for the moment.

In 1972, Bob Griese broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in week 5 against San Diego and Earl Morrell came in and took the helm. Griese could have came back at the start of the playoffs, but Don Shula knew that bringing Griese back too soon could risk the Dolphins' Super Bowl run. Now Shula did start Griese over Morrell, but by not starting Griese before he was ready was the smart move.
I see quite a bit of Shula in Gase. I don't see Tannehill coming back before he is completely ready and even if Tannehill isn't effective, we always have Moore to fall back on. -
I have never been overly impressed with Tannehill, going back to his A&M days where I seen a lot of his games living in Big 12 country. The real Big 12. He seems to have really started playing consistent, good football though when he got hurt. He still has a clunker every now and again and Moore has led this offense to 34 pts in back to back games but I hope Tannehill comes back for the playoffs. I believe he gives us our best chance to win. Other guys have stepped up and made some big plays the last 2 games and Moore has done a great job putting them in position to make those plays but Moore misses easy throws that Tannehill doesnt typically miss. Tannehill is capable of being a playmaker in his own right. With Moore, the running game and receivers need to be that much better. Its nice to have 2 solid QBs but I think Thill with his accuracy and decision making gives us a better chance than Moore. Theres a few things I wish Tannehill would learn from Moore though. Thill just has the better, more accurate arm and makes better decisions.

I think Adam knows that he CAN win in the playoffs with Moore's big play capability. When you are an outmatched boxer you need to have the "haymaker" in your arsenal and hope you land that one big shot to have a chance. Matt Moore is that haymaker imo..so it is silly to bring him back even at 80%.

If Tannehill is the Dolphins QB of the future, then if he's a healthy-go, he has to start.
Don't underestimate how important it would be to get a playoff game under Tannehill's belt.danmarino and Rocky Raccoon like this. -
So he had some cartilage removed and played the next week (which I can see), but the ACL was still not intact. He had surgery on that ACL after playing the Patriots in the AFC Championship game, but I read he was back a few months later. Looks like he wasn't really effective in the Pats game.
After his surgery, he had one of his best years. Had his most TDs thrown in '08.
Tannehill's injury is simply a matter of limiting the damage already done. There are studies out there describing athletes playing without an intact ACL (sometimes painlessly). The problem is not knowing when that joint will become unstable. It already inherently lacks stability given the injury as it is. There is no way of telling if he will (or will not) sustain articular and/or cartilage damage if he plays. There is a higher chance of less injury if he doesn't. Even with a brace, there's nothing conclusive regarding this type of injury; only that it can assist in stability.
In my experience (full tear ACL/MCL with a medial meniscus), I did everything normally. I wasn't on an NFL playing field, but I still hiked, biked, kayaked, ran, played basketball, golfed. It was three months or so into the injury that my knee began buckling with increased frequency, and only while golfing. Actually, just walking on the course. I had some buckling here and there (maybe two or three times in the first couple of months), but only when the buckling began happening more than once a week, did I finally seek the advice of an orthopod.
Injuries to athletes can be fixed, generally without incident. With a little hard work and therapy, they can recover quite nicely. Look at Cam Wake.
But everyone is different. Rivers, for example, seemed to cope with his injury much better than most. And we're talking about Tannehill's left knee vs Rivers' right knee. For a right-handed QB, the left knee is probably a little more important because he plants it.
I just don't know. I want him to play, but I also want him in TC.mbsinmisc, KeyFin and Surfs Up 99 like this. -
I tore my acl in 8th grade, played a yr of baseball before having the surgery to fix it. My orthopedic surgeon at the time, who my wife actually works for now didnt want to risk messing up my growth plates so he made me wait a yr. I never had an issue running in a straight line. Its stopping and cutting thats the problem. With a brace I would suspect Thill would be fine with a non tear. The brace should do part of the job of the acl. The rehab from acl surgery used to be abour 12 months. Lets hope it never comes to that. Its a ****ty rehab.

This may simply be psychological gamesmanship on part of the coaching staff regarding their first round opponent.
Making it seem like Tannenhill could return to make the other team spend even a little bit of time prepping for the possibility.
Plus it keeps Tannehill engaged and the fans hopeful. Seems to be thoughtful forward thinking.Colmax likes this. -

Muscles respond to stress, they don't respond to rest only. He could be received electrical stimulus, stretching to ensure he doesn't lose range of motion due to extended inactivity and or simply some simple exercises designed to maintain what he has left rather than allowing those muscles/ligaments to atrophy.
I broke my knee and after ten days of being immobilized my thigh was half the size it used to be. I started doing exercises on my own to help stimulate that muscle as I knew the longer I left it the worse it was going to be to get it back.
And by that I mean walking on the bastard ten days after breaking the bottom plateau in my knee without crutches for long periods. Hurt like hell but personally I think it saved me a ****load of rehab.SICK, Surfs Up 99 and Colmax like this. -
They're probably doing some range of motions stuff and strengthening the joint, seeing how he responds.
He went to Andrews' institute over in Pensacola. He's certainly in good hands. He'll be fine long-term. Not knowing 'the now' is what bugs.
From the tweet, he's working. He hasn't gone through surgery. I kind of get the sense that he's wanting to see if he can make it in time for the playoffs.
It's the plant leg, so I'm not sure how that would affect him. He could be gun shy in the pocket. Obviously, it could worsen. Can he avert pressure without significant pain?
I kind of get this sneaky suspicion he's preparing to try to play in the WC. Whether or not he plays is the question.
I could almost guarantee that if Miami wins the WC, he'd be back for for the divisional. I could even see him in relief of Matt in the second half if he suits up in the WC, esp if the offense is stagnant.
We'll see.Last edited: Dec 31, 2016Surfs Up 99 likes this. -
I just can't get on board with ringing him back at anything less than 90%...is this team and it's plethora of injuries really going to make a deep run? Is Ryan at 80% with limited mobility vs a patchwork OL going to play all that much better than Moore who has proven to maneuver quite well in the pocket?
Only scenario I see is if we somehow roll into Pitt and win a game despite Moore....then maybe I go into Foxboro with a Ryan Tannehill.LI phinfan likes this. -
He needs to just sit it out, thank his lucky stars it wasn't a torn ACL and get ready for next season. Moore is our guy for now and I'm good with that. Was talking to my dad the other day (a Pats fan) and he said he actually likes Moore better than Tannehill. I of course disagree with him, but it was an interesting opinion from someone who doesn't follow the team.

I thought it wasn't a tear, but a sprain, which is like a partial tear?

After considering all of the opinions on Tannehill for the past several days and after weighing my own earlier, I've come to the conclusion that I'm looking at the Dolphins' long term, perennial trips to the playoffs and return to our glory days.
If Tannehill is indeed our QB of the future; if Tannehill is indeed our franchise, then unless he's 100%, Matt Moore is the man for the remainder of the season. No sense starting Tannehill, taking a chance and losing him permanently, then be back in the same boat we were in following the '99 season...if Tannehill IS our team's QB for years to come.mbsinmisc likes this. -
Let's see ......
He's due a big increase in pay if we pick up the team option and obviously solidifies him as our QB going forward for at least 3 years. Why even screw around if he's anything less than 100%?
Personally I find it to be quackery if they let him out there without legitimate time to heal and rehab - playoffs or no playoffs. Rushing him out there would tell me that they don't have much faith in the future and are trying to salvage this season's lightening in a bottle. -

Nothing about Tannehill playing is going to help our awful linebackers and mediocre, or worse, play of our center and right guard.
Not only that, but I think Matt Moore has better instinctive vision of the field and is more decisive. Tannehill is a better passer but with any limitation of mobility whatsoever, his 2nd best asset flys out the window. Even a healthy Ryan Tannehill isn't worth 11 more points than Matt Moore, and with his propensity for holding onto the ball and mediocre pocket presence, disaster looms in the slightest notion of playing Tannehill.Finster likes this. -
Gase has been very careful with guys all year. Maybe Pouncey was rushed back, but between Parker and Albert, he is shown not to rush this. We have to accept this injury as season-ending. It has been a disturbibg trend in the NFL.
