I have been a Miami Dolphins fan for a long time. I can't think of a time when Miami could lose 2 starting offensive linemen and not collapse.

Beat a top 5 team in the league with 6 starters missing on offence for most of the game (4 OL, Mostert and Waddle) and 3 defensive starters in JP, Baker and Holland. The fact that the Dolphins can overcome these injuries and still be in the running for the #1 seed is mental to me.

Even if they end up losing the next 2 (I don’t expect them to, I think they can win out and take the #1) and have to go in the road in the playoffs, if they get most of those players back they can beat anyone.

Yeah I disagree. If we lose the next 2 it means they don't have the right mentality to overcome difficulties. You can get healthy afterwards and it won't make much of a difference if mentally you're not tough enough. I said before the Cowboys game that you can't use injuries as an excuse — championship teams tend to be able to overcome adversity, sometimes lots of it — and the Dolphins delivered.

Same thing going forward: no excuses. I'm fine if they lose one out of the next two games, but it is a disaster given where we've been the last month or so if they lose both and don't win the division. That's an end-season collapse right there. If that happens we are not winning 3 road playoff games healthy or not. It's mostly mental when it comes to championships (i.e., once in do-or-die type games with tough opponents), and we need to deliver. So far they have, very happy about that, but it's not over yet.

 

It gets to a point that even the strongest mentality teams just can’t overcome the physical limitations of their backups. Having Cotton play guard instead of Hunt, Eich instead of Williams, Cedric instead of Waddle, BJones instead of Holland, eventually the missing talent catches up to you.

As I said, the fact that this team is missing 9 starters out of 22 and still in the running for the #1 seed shows just how mentally strong they are to me but if you get to the playoffs and the other team is healthy then you are at a massive disadvantage.

I expect to beat Buffalo at home as their defence is probably more banged up than the Dolphins and the Dolphins defence is a much, much better unit than that first game where they were restricted by the physical limitations of Kohou and Apple.

 

We beat the Cowboys with all those injuries so we're clearly not at such a disadvantage that we can't beat very good teams. And it's not like we played perfect football against the Cowboys. Far from it. So no there are no excuses. There's no team out there that this team can't beat even with the injuries we have. The one exception would be if Tua is completely out, but that's not the case. If they lose out it's because they're not mentally strong enough.

 

I disagree with your disagreement, LOL. Mental toughness isn't the only factor in play here, and I believe we have enough of that to overcome most obstacles. We've proven that many times.

The gaps between the #1 team and everyone else are so slim these days, it really is any given Sunday. I mean, look at Tennessee...we're clearly way better and that's probably a game we win 9/10 times. Look at Philly, a team we matched or outplayed, yet penalties were really the difference in the day. There are so many stories within the stories that change this from black and white to a million possibilities that play out every week.

Injuries are a part of that story and that doesn't mean you're mentally weak. For example, Tua isn't any mentally weaker when Armstead is out, but he sure does play differently out of necessity. The run game changes, the route trees change, the timing changes...all because of one guy that doesn't throw or catch. Because if McDaniel doesn't adjust then Tua and 10 other starters are going to have a very difficult afternoon.

I do agree with the "no excuses" part. But even if Miami were to lose their final two and enter the playoffs as a wildcard, it doesn't change the narrative for the first game in the playoffs. If anything, they'd probably be hungrier and even more determined. Mental toughness has nothing to do with being outplayed. If anything, it shows more based on how a team bounces back.

 

Of course being decimated by injuries is an excuse for a loss

Just because they can overcome one week is not a predictor for the next

Lack of practice reps, lack of continuity will eventually keep you from reaching consistent levels

You won't find many SB teams that ended with a late season collapse. We lose out we're likely not making the SB (statistically). Like I said we've already proven that with the injuries we have we can beat good teams. So if we lose out (i.e., not just to one opponent but let's say last 2 regular season and first playoff game), then yes it's because we weren't mentally strong enough.

Unless the injury is at QB you'll actually find it's very difficult to predict winners and losers just by looking at injuries. It's not as big a factor as many observers think. Remember last year when we had all those anti-Tua posters claiming our win against Buffalo didn't "count" because Buffalo had all those injuries on defense? Yeah, and I pointed out how Buffalo was injury-ridden the whole year lol. Yet they ended up #4 in points allowed per game. No way anyone here who looks at injuries to predict outcomes would have predicted Buffalo ends #4 in defense.

Statistically it's not the predictor you think it is (unless it's at QB of course). Just like Tua playing well without Hill was not predicted by those thinking an injury like that is crucial. Yes it's mostly mental by the time you get to the do-or-die type games. No excuses. Have to win the division at minimum.

With Waddle likely out, I wonder if we finally see a Claypool package this weekend. He is familiar with Baltimore and has had some great games against them while in Pittsburgh.

Looks like waddle isn’t playing Sunday. Huge loss for us. They will blanket hill and make us one dimensional. Someone need to step up bigger than ever before

 

I see it similar but if Kyle Hamilton can’t play on Sunday, that will increase our chances for a win tremendously, cause they’re a different defense without him.

 

Waddle is officially out. There is optimism that Holland is back. Hunt could be back. Chosen could get cleared by game time. McDaniel said Claypool will get more involved.

Big news on the other side is that Flowers returned to practice today, but Hamilton did not. Huge hit for their secondary if he can't go.

 

I'm very optimistic about the vending machine on Sunday.

 

Isn't that what every team has tried...and failed to do this season? You can't blanket Tyreek without leaving half the field wide open. Those are the games Mostert or Achane go for 200+ yards and Tua has a career day.

Plus, Tyreek catches a bomb TD or two anyway, just because you're not shutting him down.

 

yea, it isn't like shutting down Tyreek Hill isn't the main goal of every team the Dolphins have played.

I mean, he's on pace to have the best receiving year ever. If holding him to 120 yards and a TD is "shutting him down", I'd take that every week.
