Thats an impressive top 6 that Faulk names, I'd say Ronnie fits in 7th.
-
I dont think Tomlinson is an elite back anymore. Maybe a few years ago, but not now. I still wonder what kind of numbers Ronnie would've put up had he played the entire 2007 season...
-
Marshall's list was questionable in my opinion. He had Michael Turner up there, who is impressive, but its only been one year and he had a boatload of carries. Same goes for DeAngelo Williams. I wouldn't put them up there until he does it for a couple years. I can't argue Westbrook though, he's a brilliant back.
I think the guys up there have to be consistent and legit runners over a period of time. Leaving Clinton Portis off the list is ridiculous in my opinion. He's incredibly underrated and I fail to see why. Marshall said Portis is a non-factor in the pass game but only a year ago, he had nearly 50 receptions.
I would put the following above Ronnie Brown though (in no order):
Marshawn Lynch
Thomas Jones
Maurice Jones Drew
LaDainian Tomlinson
Brandon Jacobs
Clinton Portis
Brian Westbrook
Adrian Peterson
DeAngelo Williams
That's nine. I think Ronnie Brown, Marion Barber and Steve Jackson are similar.
As for top five, I'll go with this.
1. Adrian Peterson - I think however you spin it, he's the best back and one of the most talented. Yes he has a quality left side of the offensive line but he also knows how to create holes using his eyes and his explosiveness is incredible IMO.
2. LaDainian Tomlinson - Had the worst year of his career last year - 1100 yards. Not bad, lol. I'd take it. I think he can still do it with the best of them.
3. Clinton Portis - Underrated.
4. Brian Westbrook - I would put him higher if he stayed healthy on a yearly basis.
5. I can't think of anyone really. Maybe MJD because he's an all purpose back but he's never carried the load. Man four elite backs?

Untill Ronnie Brown can put up the stats that proves he's an elite, top 5 back he isn't. That's just the reality of it.
My top 5:
1.AP
2.LT
3.Michael Turner
4.Clinton Portis
5.Brian Westbrook
IMO, Turner is an elite back because his Avergae per carry was always high. 4.9 to be exact. He just never had the chance playing behind LT.
I do think, however, that Ronnie Brown and Deangello Williams are ready to be top 5 backs once LT and BW continue to slide. Their age, and injuries for Westbrook, will catch up to them leaving the door open for Ronnie Brown and Deangello Williams. -

2005 - 13 carries per game / 15 games played
2006 - 18 carries per game / 13 games played
2007 - 17 carries per game / 7 games played
2008 - 13 carries per game / 16 games played
I find it ironic that the more carries he's gotten, the less games he's played in a regular season.miamiron and Stringer Bell like this. -
Well, 2007 was a freak injury. No matter how many carries he got per game, he was going to get injured.

I'd put him somewhere between 8-12 probably.

If his injuries were feet or chronic knee injuries, I would agree with you. Since the nature of his injuries are not, I disagree.resnor, skippysphins, MonstBlitz and 2 others like this. -

Ronnie Brown to me ranks as the Running Back most in need of a monster season, he is #1, LT out in SD is #2 and Westbrook up in Philly is #3.
Otherwise he is a 4.2 ypc and 30+ receptions type of back, which puts him in the middle of the pack as it were. -
An injury is an injury. If you have ten freak injuries you have ten freak injuries. The result is still the same, you aren't playing or helping your team.

I didint hear of any knee problems he had when he was in Auburn -
Can you use the history of Ronnie Brown's injuries to say that he will be most likely injured next year? -
But if you asked me who is more likely to get injured next year, Ronnie Brown or MJD, I would say Brown. -

I'm in the camp that expects a HUGE season for Ronnie Brown. I really think 1,300-1,500 all purpose yards, as a baseline (and probably more) are not out of the question. I think he's coming into this season stronger and faster than he was this time last year. He's obviously playing for a big contract. And, the FO is gonna be looking very closely trying to decide whether or not to make the investment (so, he should a lot of action this season).
Now, does he deserve to be in the top 10 based on what he's done so far? Probably not. But, I really think the best is yet to come. If I had to do a top 10 list based on past performances, as well as projected performance (and factoring in things like whether or not they a feature back, have a history of injury issues, are on the decline and so forth), my list would something like this:
1) AP (there's All Day, then there's everyone else).
2) MJD (should have a monster year with no Fred Taylor to share the carriers with).
3) Michael Turner (Atlanta's offense should be better, and certainly more balanced with Gonzo on board. Turner should have more room to run in '09).
4) Matt Forte (here again, the addition of Cutler will keep opposing defenses more honest. He should have no trouble duplicating last year's numbers, which were very solid).
5) LT (no longer the elite at the position, but I think he has a bounce back season that reminds us some of the LT of old).
6) Steve Slaton (Who??? LOL...all this kid did was run for over 1,200 yards -- 4.8 YPC -- and 9 scores as a rookie. Add to the fact that he is the feature back).
7) Brian Westbrook (I'd have him over Slaton, but truth is I think they're headed in different directions. Besides if there is an injury prone back, Westbrook is it).
8) Steven Jackson (if he can stay healthy, all season, he could out produce everyone on this list...except AP).
9) Frank Gore (a better passing offense would help him immensely. Still top ten talent IMO).
10) Clinton Portis (he makes the list mainly because he is a feature back. But, the truth is I think that offense holds him back).
Honorable mention (and, in no particular order): D'Angelo Williams, Chris Johnson, Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs and Ronnie Brown. -
A lot of people underrating Chris Johnson. Better than Forte and Slaton IMO
-
I say this is a pretty good list,
1. Adrian Peterson Minnesota
2. Matt Forte Chicago
3. Maurice Jones-Drew Jacksonville
4. Michael Turner Atlanta
5. DeAngelo Williams Carolina
6. Chris Johnson Tennessee
7. Steven Jackson St. Louis
8. Frank Gore San Francisco
9. Marion Barber Dallas
10. Steve Slaton Houston
11. Clinton Portis Washington
12. LaDainian Tomlinson San Diego
13. Brian Westbrook Philadelphia
14. Brandon Jacobs
15. Marshawn Lynch -
No doubt in my mind that Ronnie Brown is going to have a breakout year!!

And If I remember correctly, in 2007, Ronnie Brown put up better numbers with more carries. When he had his first game with 20+ carries, he ran for 100+ yards. Then we started feeding him the ball more, and he started to produce more.

if it werent for Cleo's arm, he would have had an all-pro year. -
