Hey guys. I whipped up this column on Christmas and was wondering where you all stood:
Dolphins' maligned safety enjoying Pro Bowl caliber half-season
Let me know if you all agree with my somewhat radical stance.

No, he has gotten better, but far away from Pro Bowl level.
-
sorry...NO...he's a slow learner...late on position and play regonition....late and poor on pass coverage....good tackler, but after the play had developed for some yardage....NOT first team

Also, you do realize that safeties are supposed to make tackles after the play has developed for some yardage. That's why they're called "safeties". Most importantly, you do realize that we have one of the worst run defenses in football, making his task doubly difficult, yet despite that, he still manages to make tackles at the line of scrimmage.
As for his positioning, play recognition, and general pass coverage skills, did you see his interception on Sunday? He pretty much did everything you just said he's not good at, and flashed some impressive athleticism.
And all this after just 7 starts at the position.
If you don't think he's playing at a Pro Bowl level that's fine, but I just don't see how you came to the conclusions in your post. -
He's gotten better, that's for sure, but then again he couldn't get any worse. He's no where near pro-bowl caliber.
-
he may not be now, but i can see him there in a few years.
-
He's not even close to pro-bowl caliber.
-
Has he improved? Definately and I'm glad he has.
But he is not Pro Bowl Caliber.
I'm actually not fond of that term anyway, since the Probowl is nothing more than a popularity contest. -
He's a playmaker, but he still whiffs somewhat often. If he lessons those whiffs and keeps the INT's up then he'll be a pretty good player.
Right now he reminds me of Buckley. Playmaker but got burned a lot to. -
Jason is a "playmaker," the dude makes plays. I don't think he is pro bowl level yet but has the talent. Even before this year every time Jason got on the field he would make something happen, he would force a fumble or get a pick. Our secondary has played ok IMHO this year but has lacked in the "making big plays" area and Jason makes those plays. Jason leads our team in picks, despite getting on the field midway into the season.
I feel people are hesitant to give Jason credit because of the past he has had so far. People have labeled him a bust, and coaches have been real weird with him, so its been hard to judge what has been going on with him. But for me when I saw him play I was always pretty impressed with him. The times he got beat in coverage were not Jason getting torched but as I saw it were amazing plays by the other teams qb and receiver. Most of the time I would watch the play and think he played it very well and there was nothing anyone could have done to stop that play. The thing was that it happened a lot on him. I also want to say he has made some mistakes as well, that long run play against the Pats was his fault I guess but I'm willing to understand everyone will make those mistakes and he probably will know where he is supposed to be on that play the next time.
Thats my long and short of it. -
-
He has started getting better, but sorry there are much better safeties out there in the AFC right now to be saying he is Pro Bowl Caliber
-
IMO he has he is all over the field iin ever tackle playing good coverage
-
Did you see the play were he lined up out of position and they gave up a 50+ yrd touchdown run becuase of it? He is playing better, he has the athletisim to be a probowler, but makes far too many mental mistakes to be a probowler. -
-
it bothers me how many times he's taken terrible angles at charging runningbacks.
-
He needs to take better angles on running plays, and be more disciplined with gap responsibilities. His coverage skills are good, he has good speed, good hands, but could get better.
In short he's played solid but theres obviously room for progress, and I think he has the ability to get better. -

As for the various accusations that he takes bad angles on run plays, I find this amazing because both game film and stats say that he has been among the surest tacklers on the team.
And again, anyone who watched the game against the Eagles can attest that Allen made one game saving tackle after another against one of the most elusive backs in the league.
He may not be a Pro Bowler yet, due to lack of experience, but to say that he's dumb or doesn't know how to take angles just doesn't seem to make any sense. -

That happened in his first week as a starter.

He's played decently certainly. He'll improve going into next year, but he needs to trust his instincts more as he's slow coming up with passes underneath. I think SS is perfect for him.
As for him being "dumb as a box of rocks" or "stupid", he graduated in 3 years at UT. He's a very smart, affable man. He has trouble digesting information in a hurry. That doesn't make him thick. -

My biggest concern is the way he throws his body around,he does'nt seem to have good technique when tackling, he likes to think he's a big hitter but with his narrow hips, shoulders, skinny wrists and ankles that boy is'nt gonna last long, he needs to learn how to be compact with explosivity when he tackles. -
no but he has gotten much better...will be interesting to see if parcells keeps him

I'm sorry you're right. He might make a great golfer but the in NFL if you can't process information in a hurry it doesn't bode well. If you can figure out a way to make his synapse fire faser he might make it to a probowl and you may win the Noble Peace Prize. Good luck with that! -

Allen isn't thick and painting him as if he is, isn't a fact. -
It is what it is. Facts are facts.

When it comes to processing information on the football field he is. He has better than great athleticism but if he can't react in a sufficient amount of time none of that means anything. I hope can turn the corner that's what's best for the Dolphins. If he can't project over! -
Pro Bowl? Jason Allen in the Pro Bowl?:001_rolleyes:
My goodness no, not unless blown coverages count as much as Int's....:)
I like Jason Allen, took a whole boatload of flack for supporting JA over at FH, he has played better, he has shown physical skills to run step for step with Randy Moss and hit the NY Giants Jacobs so hard the ball flew 5 yds when Jacobs fumbled.
Then he can blow an assignment and give up a 59 yd rushing TD, then pick off Tom Brady...
Meaning he is just a young and green and phyiscally gifted player who has enormous upside.
This offseason is a hazard for Jason Allen, if we fire our Staff and hire new people, if JA is resting on his laurels, like "Jason Allen Pro Bowler?" he will be back on the edge of the bench..or gone... -
He's been a bright spot on our D, but I think Pro Bowl caliber is really put up on a pedestial right here. I don't think the Pro Bowl means much, especially because it's all names, not always the best players. I think he's playing as a solid safety, but he could be one of the best safeties in the league with time. Next year we will see what he can really be with a full TC with the first team. I think he can handle it, but we'll have to see...

Catching a lot of flack aren't you?..............What I've seen is a guy who is finally getting comfortable and taking advantage of the opportunity he was given. IMO assigning him the "pro bowl caliber" label is premature. But I would be willing to bet he'll be on this team next year and be given every opportunity to win the starting FS position.Click to expand...
If nothing else, I succeeded in avoiding the mainstream topics that 90% of the other Dolphin media outlets chose to write about today. -
I didn't like the obscure blurb in a Herald article on Monday, that Allen was still celebrating his INT after the game.
Wonderful, after a blowout defeat we've got another guy who is enthralled with himself.
I really wish the post game interviews of the early '70s teams were available. That locker room was like a morgue after a loss. Henry Barrow of WIOD could barely find anyone to speak to him after a defeat and the ones who did were in hush stunned tones. That went on for years. It's one of the reasons I can't take this era seriously, or with much emotion either way. My memory is excellent and these clowns don't represent the Miami Dolphin standards that I grew up with. -
Huh? I can agree on the slow learner thing, sort of, but you do realize that he's been asked to shuffle around from position to position before finally finding his place at free safety due to injury?

Ok Mrs Allen, your son played better . He had nowhere to go but up. Heard whispers that he does not like to spend time in the film room and needed motivation. I hope he continues to improve. God knows we need it.
