We needed a new thread for this.

 

I've been harsh on Tannehill the entire season and I DO NOT BLAME HIM AT ALL.

I admired his grit and awareness last night and I hope it's a sign of things to come.

I blame a coaching staff that refuses to run the ball.
I blame WR's that drop passes that quality WR's and TE's catch.
I blame the STUPID personal fouls for killing momentum.
I blame our terrible defense.

 

Reasonable people will start to realize that they were too harsh on Tannehill if he follows up this game with improved manuverability and pocket precense.
The accuracy will come. The poor guy has been battered to death and forced to adapt to terrible coaching, so you can't really blame him for playing a bit hyped up on those throws.

The outcome of the game really didn't matter. We are not making the playoffs and were better off losing. The far more important thing is to examine how Tannehill performs now that he has more of a say in the game plan. So far the results have been better.

Also, if they had won, how much better would you have felt today? For me it didn't matter. Last night I was upset we lost but this morning I realized it wouldn't have made a difference if we had won.

 

I like how Tannehill played yesterday (and how he actually seemed to care), but the score is really 1-1 since Lazor was fired. He played like crap the first game and good the second. 3 more to go.. it's an audition for whoever his new coach is.

 

Two factors - It's clear that Tannehill is a bit shell shocked from not only the state of the OL, but from the incompetence of Lazor and the rest of the coaching staff. He had a week to work out the kinks and came out focused and showed us the type of QB he can be when he moves around.

Until he reverts back to being a dinosaur in the pocket I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
I'm not concerned with his accuracy on the move, I'm fairly certain it will improve once he gets his mojo back.

 

Ryan Tannehill's own words following last night's loss, "When it came down to it in the 4th quarter we didn't get it done and that's when the good teams step up, the good players step up and make plays and we didn't do that."

Was this a team loss? Absolutely. Was this game there for the taking? Absolutely. Would a franchise/elite (whatever you want to call it) step up at the end of this game? That is what makes them franchise/elite.

On Miami's final drive starting with the ball at the 48 yard line, 1st and 10 Tannehill had horrible placement on the pass to Landry leading to the incompletion (the play Landry inexcusably got the personal foul). Even with that on 3rd and 11 had Landry open for a TD after moving outside of the pocket and missed him big time (I thought that was supposed to be Tannehill's strengths).

The Dolphins offense didn't score the last 24:37 of the game against a team that is setting all-time records for 4th quarter collapses and is last in pass defense (315 per game) and gives up 7.7 YPA...I think it's fair criticism by the OP.

 

No need to worry about giving him the benefit of the doubt. Let it all play out and we'll see how he played the last 5 games of this season. I'd love nothing more than to see Tannehill prove he's our franchise QB, but there have been too many cases where he shines one game then poops the next. So let's just wait and see what he does.

 

The criticism by the OP on Tanne has some merit, but one thing that isn't justified is to say Tanne should be blamed for the loss. At the VERY least, distribute the blame, especially among the defense.

I agree with this... When the drums start beating and the natives start getting restless, Tannehill seems to enter into a different level of focus.

That's partially why I was hyped up when Campbell was announced. I though that he would know how to appeal to Tannehill's psyche, to get to the bottom of what makes him tick.

It happened last year when Philbin was non committal after we got destroyed by KC at home.. And happened last night after weeks of speculation that Tannehill was playing woefully and wasn't worthy of being a franchise QB. The media in Miami starting writing stories on it.

What happened? Much like in 2014, Tannehill shows us incredible pocket poise and looks the part of a true franchise QB.

The bigger question is, what type of coach do we need to push him to the limit and also work with his current skillset? Or is it possible that Tannehill just doesn't have a fire that is sustainable?

I don't know. I've hired many salespeople in my career and while it's an odd parallel, I've worked with guys that always seem to do incredible when threatened but then revert back to mediocre when the pressure is off.
This is a wild theory on my part.

Well it's an interesting question: better to get a coach that can scheme right with Tanne, or better to get a coach that knows how to push people to their limit. Hard to answer with Tannehill because he seems like he needs both, and it's rare to get both.

Too bad Parcells isn't around for another coaching gig because in terms of pressing the right buttons he was a master.

Tannehill didnt miss the Damian williams throw, **** that noise. Williams has to extend himself and catch that, period.

 

If he can play as well as he did on Monday Night every week we will be a playoff team and a contender. If he had more help and the defense was above college level we easily win that game.

 

The problem is elite QBs have a history of winning those games a significant percentage of the time. Tannehill doesn't.

Regardless of how well Tannehill, or any QB, plays during the first 3 quarters if they aren't able to make the plays at the end of the game that player is not the answer at QB. There are too many good teams in the NFL and a high percentage of games are won and lost in the 4th quarter and being able to elevate their game at the end of the game is what makes a QB elite or not more than anything else.

 

Tannehill had a good game yesterday. But have to put those good games in perspective, they have all been against porous defenses. Still made some big time throws though

 

Again, how many elite QBS are on teams with a bad defense, bad oline, receivers who won't step up, and bad coaching (or several interim coaches)?

I just don't see the comparison being anywhere equal.

And they entered the night with the with the same record as us. Coughlin is head and shoulders better than Campbell. Beckham is better than anything we have. Eli had a career night as far as completion percentage, every QB that faces our defense seems to have some sort of career high. Their OC stuck with the run, even though we were stuffing it in the first quarter.

I hardly think they are the team you want to use to prove your point.

 

If you have seen the games the Giants have blown in the 4th quarter I think you might disagree...4 losses in the final 75 seconds (most ever in single season) and have come form bone-headed plays. Did you see the Dallas game to kick off the season?

So what you are saying is the two passes on the final drive in which one was clearly thrown behind Landry and the other missed Landry when he was alone beyond the defense for an easy TD was a result of Miami's OL, defense and coaches...interesting.

I was disputing this idea that elite QBs just win games, regardless of what's around them. Rivers is as good an example as any right now.

 

I'm not so sure it is realizing you were to harsh as much as it is evaluating what you are seeing at the time. I stand behind my criticism overall in 2015, but he undeniably looked like abetter QB than he has in a long time last night...hopefully we see more of that guy this year.

 

Despite all my criticism I still like the kid. Heck he is in my signature.

I may be scapegoating him a bit because when you look at the team as whole it's a dysfunctional ****show across all facets from the ownership to the last man on the practice squad.

That doesn't mean I'm onboard with him as the long term solution - It only means that some of the theories here have more validity to me than I previously wanted to believe.

If in fact Lazor prevented Tannehill from moving outside the pocket - I can see why he was fired for being an incompetent idiot, for not only stunting his development, but for also exposing our atrocious line to the point where Tannehill is shell shocked.

 

tannehill has looked frustrated, all the hits and the ****ty playcalling take its toll. the giants can't get pressure at all but last night they were getting through like oline was swiss cheese. imagine being a qb that has a god awful oline, you know the giants are bringing at least 6, your guys cant block 5 let alone 6, and you have no rb to pick up the pressure.

 

The wide receivers dropped alott of passes that could have led to touchdowns

 

Rivers is an extreme example. I take it as a whole. Rivers is 91-66 as a starter including the 3-10 record this year. Excuse me, the Chargers are 91-66 when Rivers starts, at least I think that is an actual stat ;) Rivers has led SD to the playoffs 5 times in 10 years. Rivers has 25 GWDs.

Tannehill the other hand is 28-33 as a starter has not led Miami to the playoffs and has 6 GWDs (including only one this year that was a pass hitting an Eagle helmet and Landry catching for a TD on the 1st play of the 4th quarter and then the Eagles got Shanchized a couple of times, but hey it counts).

Rivers, more often than not, would have made those passes at the end of the game. Tannehill doesn't have a history of more often than not, just the opposite.

Seriously, I would have NO problem if Tannehill stepped up his game and started playing like a franchise/elite QB. I would get on board. I had one foot on the bandwagon this year in the preseason from reports how well he was playing. Supposedly his command of the offense, deep passing, leadership, etc...took significant steps forward. It became clear to me, based on his play, it wasn't the case. All the stats confirm this. I even came on the site complimenting Tannehill how well I thought he played against the Titans (of course, to the mocking of Tannehill fans).

 

I blame loss on the fact that we didn't go with the all white throwbacks.

Why is it that I find myself not getting past the word "dull--" in your posts?

 

Let's not act like Rivers had garbage in those winning years. We aren't looking at a whole. We're talking about elite QBs winning no matter what's around them. Elite QBS aren't amassing winning records playing with teams like the current Chargers or Dolphins.
