Came a week later than I thought it would actually, given the winning streak.

Wtf...Ireland was given 1 year extension in the offseason
RT @AdamHBeasley: Miami Herald exclusive: Dolphins quietly extend Jeff Ireland's contract in the offseason http://t.co/sLZTP9JZZ0
we actually extended his contract before the season?! -
Now that I think about it, this likely didn't happen overnight. So I might have been right that the 2-0 record was enough to bring Steve Ross' side to the negotiating table.

Ah you know what, I misread this.
The Dolphins extended Ireland during the off season before any of the winning began. They gave him a one year extension to prevent lame duck status.Paul 13 likes this. -
Jeff Ireland Extended
Undefeated is a present condition. Pair that with "extend" in present tense and it leads readers to believe this is happening right now.
It should say "extended" in the offseason. -

It's being labeled a one year extension so I imagine so.

or maybe (likely) you're clueless on how business actually works. They had faith in him to give him an extension because they are a lot smarter than you and can actually see what Ireland has been building the last couple of years.
I was wondering who the first guy would be to bash Ireland after we started 3-0. -
And I thought overpaying Misi was the worst extension we'd give out this year smh....who's next, Daniel Thomas?

I was somewhat baffled that Ireland had not been extended already. Good to know it was just a matter of the information not being released.

It's true that he spent a lot of Steve Ross' money. Some say he bought a playoff team by shoving all the consequences off into the future, but I don't see that because Miami looks like it could have just as much money available next off season (though just as many players coming free, holes to fill).
If he were TRULY a lame duck...trust me there were more assets he could have purchased during free agency.GMJohnson likes this. -
you mean our backup RB in a pass-oriented offense, who's getting paid a small salary, but still made a key play yesterday? As long as they extend him and don't pay much for him, I'm okay with that.
Would I like to upgrade over D Thomas? yes, but only with a draft pick. backup RB isn't worth overpaying for a FA, not in this offense anyway.Mile High Fin likes this. -

Tampa Bay's GM Mark Dominik must be thrilled...this is looking like it will be his 4th losing season in 5 years, maybe he'll see an extension shortly

Good grief, there is no reason to connect Philbin to Ireland in that way.
Philbin is in no way responsible for Jeff's previous blunders, mistakes, and catastrophes.
Philbin is the reason for this year's success so far. Ireland is the reason our victories haven't been more decisive.
Ireland's ineptitude and that of his entire scouting staff is obvious.
Philbin is a GREAT! coach.
Ireland is a BAD general manager.
Ross is an OK owner. He appears to care about winning anyway, even if he keeps Ireland and did some other questionable things as well.NolesNPhinsFan likes this. -

It's a typical 'lame' duck avoiding contract. It's not a 3-5 year deal. So his status is still up after this year, but I assume if the team gets into the playoffs and gets at least a win there...he'll get his longer contract.
And there will be much weeping from a far off segment.Paul 13 likes this. -
It's just an anti-lame duck contract and nothing more.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not shocked by it, because I expected this to happen (although not during the off-season, in secret). I still don't think the last two drafts (the definitive Ireland draft's) Miami had were all that good.

And I should add that if they do not make it, then he'll probably be fired whether he's got that year left or not.Paul 13 and Larryfinfan like this. -
