Underrated: Dream Theater, great band yet not that many people heard of them.
Disturbed
Overrated: Nirvana, i'm sorry but Nirvana is overrated. I know they are a very popular band but they are really overrated. They had some great songs but the rest was nothing great.

Gonna stay simple
Underrated: Incubus, Band of Horses, The Who (maybe not underrated but not mentioned with the likes of other bands), Umphrey's McGee, Boston, The Doors.
Overrated: Rolling Stones, Phish, Police, Metallica (past 10 or so years), Beatles (they have talent, don't get me wrong, but i've just never been into them like their cult following). -
Under-rated: Sebastian Bach (still the best voice in metal), Dark New Day, Black Label Society
Over-rated: HIP-HOP -
Underrated - the Kinks
Overrated - R.E.M. -

Underrated:
-Dream Theater. A very good progressive band that has extraordinary talent and probably one of the best drummers in the world. They know how to rock and how to hold back.
-Avenged Sevenfold. Some people may think they're overrated, but they never have the same sound for each CD they bring out. I really like that, they have a lot of influences that I enjoy including the band mentioned above: Dream Theater.
-Tenacious D. I really like their sound and style. Granted, Jack Black may make people think they're talentless, but Black has a great voice and their lyrics are pretty fun to listen to.
-Trivium. Great sound and musicianship. I love their leader singer's voice and their drummer has some talent as well. I'm really into bands with great drummers and that's why Portnoy's Dream Theater tops the list.
-Less Than Jake. I really like their style, not much more to say than this. I think these guys should be more well known, but they're not.
Overrated:
-Metallica. Great band, no doubt. But they're vastly overrated. They have many great songs, but they have many not so great songs.
-Nickelback. Man I really just don't like this band because they sound like everyone else... But they get so much more hype.
-Green Day. I never understood the obsession with Green Day and to this day I still don't. They just haven't shown much lately.
-The White Stripes. How are they selling records is beyond me...Jt0323 likes this. -

How the hell are the Stones overrated? Why don't you just say the Beatles are on that list as well?
BTW here's an underrated band found on an avatar by a poster in this thread!
Great, great band! Last edited: Jul 9, 2008Boik14 likes this. -
There is too much wrong with this post IMO... LOL! I agree those are some heavy-hitters and I could add a few there too such as Tim "Ripper" Owens, Mike Patton (awesome voice), Phil Anselmo (the early days) etc. -
There was nothing that sounded like them can be applied to MANY bands. KISS, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, Queensryche, Pink Floyd...the list goes on and on.
But that has nothing to do with being overrated or not. Let's face facts here, if Cobain didn't eat a bullet they wouldn't be as big as they are. There might have been nothing that sounded like them at that time, but they did nothing that hasn't been done before.
You want to talk innovation, the list begins and ends with Jimi Hendrix. -
Nirvana was nothing special, they were hyped up because Cobain shot himself. They were a talented group, I won't take that away from them. But they didn't revolutionize anything.

Also no Nirvana isn't overrated at least in the terms they killed the hair rock of the 80s and created grunge as a mainstream music genre. Now them being looked upon as rock gods I don't know about that but they deserve the credit they get for the most part.
Also I would like to add Metallica, Nickelback, and Kiss to my overrated list. Also GridIronKing how can you say the White Stripes are overrated, shame on you.Last edited: Jul 9, 2008His'nBeatYour'n likes this. -
I am just saying if you were around then, maybe you would have a different perspective. I remember Nirvana being the spearhead of the grundge. Even my favorite radio station at the time which generally did hits/hip hop started to do grundge. -

The fact that Kurt offed himself has nothing to do with their influence on music. Grunge was big and taking over the 90s before that. To say they haven't influenced anything is a joke. Alot of the emo music out now is definitely influenced by Nirvana. Bands like My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessionals, etc.
Rock and Roll was just about dead when Nirvana came out. Nirvana had alot to do with the revival of Rock, and ultimately the creation of what we now call alternative rock. -
Underrated: I'll start with two of my favorites - Tool and Opeth.
Overrated: Can't think of two more hyped bands than Limp Bizkit and System of a Down. I completely loathe Nickelback as well, but I think everyone knows they suck.Boik14 likes this. -
I am not even a fan of Nirvana.
Saying they are over rated, fine, that is personal opinion.
Saying they didn't influence people or revolutionize anything is wrong. Their popularity openned doors to a lot of bands. -
Underrated: Thin Lizzy-Phil Lynott is one of the most prolific song writers ever IMO...
UFO-Michael Schenker's Guitar work....'nuff said Megadeth--Dave Mustaine's music and lyrics are awesome..... Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers--You can just put on any of their albums and listen to it all the way through and not find any filler...
Overrated: Linkin Park, Nickelback, Nirvana, Coldplay, Oasis, Killers, Good Charlotte, Fall out boy, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, U2, to name a fewLast edited: Jul 9, 2008 -
