The Royals have acquired Ervin Santana from the Angels, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). The Royals acquired Santana and cash from the Angels for minor league left-hander Brandon Sisk, the teams announced.
The Royals will presumably exercise Santana's $13MM option, and perhaps attempt to negotiate a new long term deal.

Andrew McCutchen won the Gold Glove this year. Well deserved. What a year that man had!!! MVP, imo.
-
I like the Santana deal for the Royals, even if he was pretty bad this year. Good buy low.
-
Happy for him, but seriously in the AL how the heck did Trout get snubbed on Gold Glove????
-
What #1 pitcher is out there that they can acquire for basically nothing? So they're paying him 12 million next year, if he stinks he's gone the following year. If he has a bounce back even better. Like I said it's a good buy low, they gave up a career 27 year old minor leaguer for potential. If I were the Pirates or KCs of the league I'd go for these moves instead of overpaying for FA pitchers (the Jason Marquis of the MLB) on multi-year deals.DenverDolfan likes this.

Pujols to Miami

You get what you pay for.. The Giants are trying to move Lincecum... The Royals would like to move Gordon to make room for Myers... That would have made more sense then trading for a very up and down pitcher in Santanna and when he is down he is really down! -
God truly hates me if this happens.
Seriously if that does happen will you buy me a Melky Cabrera Red Sox J-shirt?finyank13 likes this. -
Why would the Royals move Gordon when they have dead weight in the OF in the form of Jeff Francoeur?
However I still don't see how trading for Santana prevents them for trading for another player. I realize they have 12 million more on the books since they picked up Santana but I don't think that would stop them from getting a Lincecum if possible.
Plus who's to say that the Giants would trade Lincecum or would trade him for Alex Gordon. If I'm the Giants and I want to move Lincecum don't you ask for Wil Myers instead?DenverDolfan likes this. -
Deal!
If it's just for 1 year I wouldn't mind it truth be told. They can do a lot worse than him, even if it will pain me to have to cheer for him as I never really liked him as a player (nothing to do with the PED stuff). I'd rather have Torii Hunter actually and would give him a 2 year deal. He'd be my first chance, even over Cody Ross.finyank13 likes this. -
I'd hope we sign Melky for a deal like that.
-
I have zero doubt in my mind if TB signed him he'd hit .350/.450/.600 with like 25 HRs or something crazy like that.Anonymous, Nappy Roots, Mainge and 1 other person like this.

I know Lincecum is a FA after the 2013 season but I still don't understand why the Giants would want to. The team is coming off of a WS title and Lincecum just had his worst year in his career. They would be selling him low and the replacement likely wouldn't be close to his potential. At the very worst he showed in the playoffs this year he could be a super-reliever (a guy that can throw multiple innings, multiple days in a row), I realize 22 million is way high for that role, if he's in the role, but the Giants won't be hurting for cash, it simply makes zero sense to trade Lincecum just because he'll be a FA next year.
Agreed on Francoeur but if I'm the Royals I'd release him or make him the 4th OFer before I trade Alex Gordon to make way for Myers.DenverDolfan likes this. -
Certainly makes rooting for certain teams to sign your qualified FAs not as exciting anymore.finyank13 likes this.

I don't get this from the Cubs side of things, doesn't seem to make sense or add up.
-
Would be surprised. Cubs draw well even when they have bad teams. Plus I don't think Theo and Hoyer would sacrifice the future of their organization prospect wise to draw more fans.
-
The Red Sox and David Ortiz have reached agreement on a two-year deal worth $26MM, a source familiar with the negotiations tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
-
Hmmm, the trade will not take place, a Cubs source tells Carrie Muskat of MLB.com (via Twitter).
Marmol would have approved a trade to the Angels, but the Cubs pulled the deal off of the table, a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The Angels are still talking with other clubs about Haren as they close in on the 11pm CST deadline to exercise his $15.5MM option.
Meanwhile, a source tells Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com (via Twitter) that the deal is not necessarily dead but is unlikely at this point.
-
Best guess is the Cubs saw Haren's medicals and got cold feet. Also that's probably why he wasn't dealt to another team. Either way Haren is now a FA so let the bidding begin.

I would trade Marmol for a wet bucket of baseballs. So my guess is the medical thing as well.

Mariano Rivera informed Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman that he wants to return next season, tweets Erik Boland of Newsday. Gaining some clarity on Rivera's situation will almost certainly influence the Yankees' stance on Rafael Soriano or any other reliever on the FA market.
Will be interested in what contract they can sign Mo to! Will it be a 1yr deal? 2yr deal? Same $15M they have paid him over the last 5 years? Will be interesting.
Also, Yanks did extend the $13.3M qualifying offers to Nick Swisher, Hiroki Kuroda, and Rafael Soriano,
-
Only nine players received qualifying offers this winter. Players who received the one-year, $13.3MM offer now have until November 9th to accept the deal. If the player turns down the offer and signs elsewhere, the team will get a compensatory draft pick in June.
- Michael Bourn, Braves
- Josh Hamilton, Rangers
- Hiroki Kuroda, Yankees
- Adam LaRoche, Nationals
- Kyle Lohse, Cardinals
- David Ortiz, Red Sox (Ortiz and the Red Sox later agreed to a two-year, $26MM deal)
- Rafael Soriano, Yankees
- Nick Swisher, Yankees
- B.J. Upton, Rays
-
The Red Sox officially announced the deal for David Ortiz. Big Papi will earn $14MM in 2013 and $11MM in 2014 with a $1MM signing bonus, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com (on Twitter).

Jason Bay is now a FA. He and the Mets reached an agreement to buy out the rest of his contract. Today about an awful deal almost from the 1st day he signed that contract. I feel bad for him though, he's a good guy and I don't think his poor seasons were because of a lack of effort. When some players just lose it, they lose it quick.
