Also Patrick Surtain left;
About time this is official.
I was noticing other teams are now well into the interview process for offensive and defensive coordinator jobs.
Who does everyone want to replace him ??
Critical hire to say the least, since McDaniel is not a defense first head coach.

I actually hope Sam Madison stays .. for everything we been through with our secondary and a no show of Byron Jones.. he got the most out of what we had available.. even though kohou was burned a few times but still made plays as an udfa.

well that's a start but who will Grier recruit? Its about time he did something right

How the hell did Special Teams coach keep his job?

I wonder if there is an open search or if they have a guy in mind? McDaniel comes from the Shanahan tree, so maybe someone in that. Maybe someone from DeMeco Ryans' staff in San Fran, though looking at the names I couldn't say much about them. Damn good unit though - maximized the talent, covering for weakness, exploiting strength.

So glad to hear about this today. There was a number of players who didn’t want Boyer as the DC to begin with. Now who to replace him with?
It’s starting to look as if Vic Fangio may indeed be a possibility. Fangio was fired as the Broncos head coach and with the Broncos job looking more and more lika a possibility for Sean Payton, I can’t see Fangio returning to the very team as DC that fired him.
Our successful defense in previous years looks more and more like the result of Flores taking over play calling from Boyer, but for the same reasons above concerning Fangio in Denver, I can’t see Miami hiring Flores as DC.
San Francisco has one of the better defenses in the league and it’s a forgone conclusion Demeco Ryan’s will be targeted for a head coaching job. I doubt any of his subordinates would be willing to jump ship to Miami when they already have their system and players in place if one is promoted to DC should Ryan’s depart.
I just hope Miami does some due diligence and brings in an established DC with a proven track record as McDaniel has openly said that defense is not necessarily his forte.jdallen1222 and KeyFin like this. -

If Fangio is tied to the hip with Payton and it’s a deal breaker, who knows. Maybe Fangio will never be an option.resnor likes this. -
Some other options besides the obvious San Fran connection ...
McDaniel was hired by Mike Pettine back in Cleveland. Pettine is currently some kind of positionless "senior defensive assistant" for the Vikings under Kevin O'Connell (another of the Shannahan branch). If you want an experienced guy, he might be the dude.
McDaniel was also a coach under Dan Quinn in Atlanta, so you could parse the defensive coaches from that Atlanta staff or current Cowboys staff. Interestingly, Leon Lett is apparently a defensive line assistant in Dallas. I will never forget that gaffe in the snow on Thanksgiving. Just an absolutely wild play.
Edit: I'd also say don't sleep on Jets staff either, if we aren't looking for experience.Last edited: Jan 19, 2023dolphin25 likes this. -

They fired Bill O’Brien in 2020 after the team started 0-4, this after the Texans went to the playoffs the two previous years (lost to the Titans in the wildcard in 2018 and the Chiefs in the divisional in 2019)…
Fired Romeo Crennell as interim at the end of the season
Hired and fired David Cully in 2021
Hired and fired Lovey Smith in 2022.
When a team fired their head coach 3 years in a row, that’s definitely not a team you want to go to and try to build something. -
He would be getting a lot more control than any of those guys. The Texans have 12 picks in this draft (including #2), they have two first rounders next year, they have over $40 million to spend, and he gets along with upper management there. They also have a handful of good young players, including a great rb in Pierce. He also said that the compensation for him would be a mid first round pick, not necessarily in this years draft.dolphin25 likes this. -

Flores is also rumored for the Cardinal's HC position as their new GM has Patriot ties. Dolphins may end up swapping their Patriot defensive coaches for Vance Joseph and Matt Burke.

But it’s also telling of the organization as well. They traded away their future in draft picks, had nothing to build on and still fired Culley and Smith when they had nothing to work with or build upon.
Hence my original statement stands…if I was Payton I’d avoid Houston like the plague!! -
PS. I’m not saying he should go there, but there are compelling arguments to be made for considering the job in Houston. -
If im the cardinals im locking in on demeco ryans.. i think demeco has more to offer this year.. i think flores will eventually get an opportunity but he needs to build on it more then it will come.. dont go chasing the money just because.. you better be ready for that division if you step to the plate..
just remember your starting quarterback is Colt Mccoy. Murray got injured on december 12 and didnt have the surgery until 2 weeks ago. -

The biggest impact to the defense may be that we've moved away from the Patriot way, which was suppose to deliver defenders whom can play multiple. This required larger LBs and the Dolphins were only successful with obtaining or developing with Elendon Roberts; a player that shouldn't play the majority snaps in a passing league. If our LBs are off ball and deeper as other teams, it may be better suite Baker, Tindall, and Riley. If Van Ginkel is retained, he and Cameron Goode add lots of wingspan to narrow passing lanes.
As for Flores, I think it turned into a bad match as Grier/Ross are very good at long term / strategic items, such as having up to Plan D for QB while allowing Flores to have decision-making to execute on these more general strategic plans. Unfortunately, the decision-making went to Flores head and he made too many that degraded the team, such as getting rid of players that had trade value and replacing coaches with less skill ones. If Flores is hired by a GM that limits him as a HC / DC and pairs him with an OC, such as Greg Roman who was his first choice with Miami, then Brian may be successful. -
Only minor bright spot is we've had 3 winning seasons (barely) in a row now, first time since 2003. But so far there's no sign that either of them is good at building a franchise. And 15 years is plenty time to see what you can do. -
Dolphins request permission to interview Seahawks coach for DC:

Our own linebacker coach ? Really ?
Still heavily ‘rumoured’ we have interest in Fangio. But no official interview to my knowledge. -

Im excited if we can get a top tier defensive coordinator like VIC. I know hes rumored to be with Sean Peyton but Miami would be entising for him with what we have going on. He would have complete control of the defense as McDaniel all alluded to him having a hands off approach to defense. Vic's getting older Florida sunshine and No State Taxes along with some good peieces on defense and if Grier will allow him to draft / pick his defensive players to make his system in Miami we might just be able to get him.
We can NOT go into the season with another rookie / unexperienced DC nor the Seahawks Defensives coordinator they sucked.
