Former Wisconsin HC Bret Bielema says talks to become Dolphins HC broke down in 2012 when Jeff Ireland didn't agree with his assessment on Russell Wilson.
I know it's all water under the bridge now but here is the article:

Hah! He really didn't want to be in Madison anymore. Talking to Miami and jumping on the Arkansas job? Barry Alvarez must be as bad as everyone says. Example: Alvarez went to the locker room and apologized to the team for not being properly prepared against Ohio State. Also, Alvarez didn't want to pay assistants as well.

I giggle when I picture Ireland's condescending reply when Brett said he would win a SB with Russell Wilson.

It's not like Wilson was some huge prospect though. Most teams were scared away by his size.
And besides, it's not like we didn't get a good QB ourselves. You take away Seattle's defense and Marshawn Lynch, and Wilson isn't a Super Bowl champion. That's not to say he isn't a good QB, but he doesn't have to do a lot to win.SICK, Mexphin and Unlucky 13 like this. -

Look, I'm not saying drafting Wilson would have been a bad move. I'm just saying there's a reason he didn't get drafted until the 3rd round. A reason that goes beyond people's dislike for Jeff Ireland.
And again, if we did draft Wilson, do you really think he'd be performing any better than Tannehill has been? We haven't had the talent around the QB like Seattle does.Mexphin, Piston Honda and 77FinFan like this. -

Everyone I talk to about Wilson thinks I hate him. I really don't. I think he's a good QB. I just don't think he's this legend some make him out to be. -
Yes. Without a shred of a doubt. He'd have been the better player and he'd have put up better numbers.
Would he have won a Super Bowl? Not so sure about that. Probably not.Bpk, , PhinFan1968 and 1 other person like this. -

He certainly would've put up better numbers than RT...unless he was restricted in the same way as RT was (i.e. forced to statue under Sherman, etc). And I'm not saying Sherman was the only reason...RT owns a piece of that too, but playing like he has at Seattle, there's no way his numbers wouldn't have been better.

Russell Wilson had some surprisingly strong backing but it was all very 11th hour. Especially on this board. Seems like about a week before the draft everyone all the sudden adored Wilson.
Personally I had him 4th behind Luck, Weeden and Tannehill. For a while I had RG3 a shade ahead of Wilson and kept telling people they're not as far apart as everyone thinks. By draft day my preference was pretty strongly for Wilson over RG3 though.Bpk and shamegame13 like this. -

THill is not young Alex Smith, he also is not Wilson, think Philbin and Co filled their roles and should be bowing out in oh..3..2..1..

Odd thing is, if one looks at Ireland's successes they came from him leaving the box -

You think he's made out to be a superhero I think most underrate him..
They had Marshall lynch there and Pete Carroll the year before he arrived, how'd that go for them?Bpk and shamegame13 like this. -
Me and AdamPrez both liked Matt Ryan back in the day
I like Tannehill, do think he is flawed, he has 1 more season imo, love his game..he just is a 80% guy when we need a 95% guy
Put it this way, if it were Pennington v Tannehill, at the same age, would take Pennington 10 times out of 10Bpk and shamegame13 like this. -
Just another case of NFL people taking a silly baseline and letting it color the obvious.
It was clear for an armchair QB like myself that Wilson had 'it'. He's the same height as Drew Brees (who they measured twice at the combine to get him to 6-0), same solid build and huge hands like Brees with an even more athleticism and arm strength. And his height? He played behind a mountainous OL at Wisconsin and it wasn't an issue. He didn't have balls batted down. All he did was lead and win, with gaudy stats. You never know until they lace them up, but that guy was a beast coming out.
Is he better than Tannehill? Clearly. And would he have fared better in Miami? Obviously. He was and continues to be the superior player. It is what it is.Serpico Jones, Bpk, and 6 others like this. -

At NCSU, saw several times instant pressure, Defenders arms were up, he'd sneak a ball through it all down the field 30 yds (better said, down the field, the ball left his hand)
Yet, he was an afterthought
And I'm a Tannehill guy, not seeing that from him
Back to Ireland, think of this, Clay/Jenkins our two up and coming guys..do not fit the planetary theoryshamegame13 likes this. -
